环境污染与保护已经成为当今社会的重大问题。上个世纪，人类社会的文明得到了飞跃的发展，科技飞速进步。人类用环境的代价换来了社会的进步。今天我们享受物质文明的时候，被污染的环境也同时在向我们索要代价。环境遭到的破环。已经达到了刻不容缓的程度。当今世界环境污染问题涉及到许多方面，其中最显著的有以下几个：
1、二氧化碳的“温室效应”
“温室效应”是当代人类社会面临的全球性环境问题之一，如果大气中的二氧化碳气体含量增加1倍，全球的年平均气温将升高1.5～4.5℃。科学家预测，随着人类活动产生的温室气体大量增加，到21，全球气温将上升2～5℃。随着温室效应的不断增强，将对人类生存环境和社会经济发生重大影响。有的科学家认为，随着全球气候变暖，两极冰雪会部分融化，从而导致海平面上升，使沿海的一些国家和城市被海水淹没。另外，随着气温升高，各地区降水和干湿状况也会发生变化，气候变化还会引起一些疾病蔓延，危害人体健康等。因此二氧化碳的“温室效应”，已引起世界各国的普遍关注。
2、臭氧层遭破坏
臭氧层遭破坏是当代人类社会面临的全球性环境问题之一，是人类活动使大气严重污染的结果。臭氧层遭破坏，使照射到地面上的太阳紫外线增多，严重损害地面上动植物的基本结构，并危害到海洋生物的生存。此外，还会使地球的气候和生态环境发生变异，直接影响人体健康，使皮肤癌、白内障等疾病增多。据科学家研究，大气中的臭氧每减少1%，照射到地面上的紫外线就会增加2%。80年代，科学家观测到南极上空的臭氧在每年的9～10月急剧减少。1985年公布的测量结果表明，南极上空的臭氧层浓度大大减少，臭氧层“空洞”已扩大。1987年，科学家们又发现北极上空也出现了臭氧层“空洞”。
3、酸雨
酸雨的形成主要是工厂、汽车、飞机等燃烧和石油、天然气，不断地向大气中排放硫和氮的百分比物造成的。酸雨的危害很大。酸雨降落河湖，会使河湖水酸化，影响鱼类生长和繁殖乃至大量死亡；酸雨降落土壤，会使土壤酸化，危害农作物或森林生长并进而危害人体健康；酸雨还会腐蚀建筑物、桥梁、铁轨等。就连保存了多少个世纪的文物古迹、碑刻石雕等也会被酸雨腐蚀得斑驳脱落、满目疮痍。酸雨给人类生存、发展带来巨大危害，被人们称为“空中死神”。
4、固体废物污染
固体废物的堆放带来的严重环境问题主要有：①占用土地，损伤地表。越来越多的城市垃圾、矿业尾矿、煤矸石、工业废渣等侵占了大量土地，直接影响了农业生产，妨碍了城市环境卫生，并且埋掉了绿色植物，破坏了大自然的.生态平衡。②污染土壤、水体、大气。堆放在地面的固体废物以及渗出物会改变土壤的成分和结构，有毒的废物还会杀伤土壤中的微生物和动物，降低土壤肥力。③危害人体健康。固体废物中所含的有毒物质和病原体，除了以大气、水体、土壤为媒介进行传播外，还会通过多种有害生物为媒介传播疾病，如传播鼠疫等。
而现代中国也正面临着一个比较严重的问题：
温室效应的主要祸首二氧化碳，我国就是世界第二大排放国，而目前二氧花硫的排放已是世界第一；土地沙漠化，世界上沙漠正已每年600万公顷的速度侵蚀土地，而我国每天都有500公顷的土地被沙漠吞食；水资源危机，作为世界21个贫水国之一的中国，全国600多座城市中，缺水的就有300多座；水土流失面积已达367万平方公里，每年至少有50亿吨沃土付之东流；我国的长江以南地区是全世界三大酸雨区，而全国酸雨面积占国土资源的30%；森林面积减少，全世界每年有1200万公顷的森林消失，而我国年均消失天然林40万公顷且按近十年的平均采伐和毁坏森林的速度，到5055年将失去全部森林；与日俱增的工业垃圾、生活垃圾已包围了我国三分之二的城市；大气污染已使我国600多座城市的大气质量符合国家标准的不到1%。据调查确认，城市中大气环境指数达到国家标准的只有40%左右，国土面积的30%以上有酸雨现象。据说造成酸雨的氮氧化物和硫磺氧化物等物质借风向流动，给日本及朝鲜半岛等上空带来极大的不良影响。另外，还有二氧化碳排放量的骤增占世界14%、严重的水质污染、水源不足、沙漠化的扩展、沙尘暴及黄沙所带来的环境污染等等诸多问题，可以说中国的环境污染已经陷入危机状态。
中国是一个在环境上回旋余地极小的大国，又是一个在全球资源、市场基本被瓜分完毕后崛起的一个后起国家。中国没有任何可能像某些先行国家那样，等到环境恶劣到极点后再来治理。但中国又是一个发展中国家，别人走过的先发展经济、再治理污染的道路，中国不可避免的也会走一遭。
因此，我们需要做的事情非常多，我们要调整好人与自然的关系，当代人与后代人的关系，以及当代人之间关系。要真正解决环境问题，首先必须改变当前人类的发展模式和道路。发展不能仅局限于经济发展，不能把社会经济发展与环境保护割裂开来，更不应对立起来。发展应是社会、经济、人口、资源和环境的协调发展和人的全面发展。1972年人类环境会议上通过了《人类环境宣言》，或为人类环境保护工作的转折点，环境问题不仅仅是环境污染问题。从全球来看生态环境破坏此环境污染更严重。冲破了就环境的狭隘观点，把人口、资源、环境与发展紧密联系起来，协调人类与环境，发展与环境的关系，才能从整体上解决环境问题。
当代人之间能否公平地分配环境保护的成本与利益能否建立一套鼓励人们的环保行为的制度安排，这直接决定着人与自然和谐这一目标的实现；如果当代人之间尚且不能实现某种最低限度的公正，那么，我们就很难指望他们会真正关心遥远后代的利益，因此，当代的集体努力与人人选择是实现可持续发展目标的关键。《我们共同的未来》把满足贫困人口的基本需要“放在特别优先的地位来考虑”。这是由于使人的基本需要得到满足，这是人作为人所享有的基本权利。贫困是对这种权利的剥夺，它使人作为的价值得不到实现。同时，贫困与破坏环境往往是互为因果的。因此，消除贫困，减少贫富差距是实现代内平等的内在要求，也是实现可持续发展的基础。
综上所述，要达到人类与自然环境的协调发展要达到可持续发展的目标——必须保护好环境。
人有权利利用自然，通过改变自然资源的物质形态，满足自身的生存需要，但这种权利必须以不改变自然界的基本秩序为限度；人又有义务尊重自然的存在事实，保持自然规律的稳定性，在开发自然的同时向自然提供相应的补偿。当然，如此确定权利和义务的范围，是以人与自然之间原本存在着和谐为前提的，可持续发展针对的则是人与自然的和谐关系已经遭受严重破坏的现实。在这个事实中，人对自然的权利和义务的范围必须相应调整。
在达到新的和谐之前，人对自然的开发方式，开发深度应当受到严格的限制；人在改变自然资源的物质形态的同时，应当更多地向自然提供补偿，以恢复其正常状态，使人与环境协调发展，达到可持续发展的目标。
