听爷爷说，他第一次坐火车是1993年的春节，长长的站台、纷乱的情形深深地烙印在他的脑海里。那时候旅客多、人员杂、上车乱，到处都是扁担挑着、背包扛着、三五成群追车奔跑的.旅客……
爷爷清晰地记得：在那个蒸汽时代的春运，站台、车厢、候车室到处是熙熙攘攘的人群，嘈杂、拥挤、拼抢，有时甚至会影响列车正点运行。车到站了，在滚滚攒动的人头面前，狭小的车门几乎要将人的身躯扭成一只麻花。旅客为了挤上车而挤掉行李、衣帽、鞋子，负责任的工作人员会把旅客遗落的物品送上车，让列车上的乘务员广播“失物招领”。
爷爷说，蒸汽火车功率小、牵引能力弱，走行区段短，一个单趟司炉工徒手铲煤就达10多吨，他们也被熏得灰头土脸；煤灰还会飘到后面的车厢，乘客也得跟着受罪。同样遭罪的还有司机，下班后除了眼睛是亮的、牙齿是白的，全身乌黑，累得筋疲力尽。那时候，乘客们如果能坐在靠窗的位置，那就是一件非常惬意的事情了。
