儿幼时即谙母训。暮临，母常枕坐于床前，摘书以诵，讲谈古今章事，传之于身，寓心以教也，是以子少时而知读书之味趣，明来日之重。及岁长，乃嗜书，忘时，长阅之通宵及旦，此得受益广知于龄，盖受母之循而善诱也。

儿今学至十年，首宿家外;适初至校舍不均，八人之舍，儿尝一人以宿。儿虽非孩童，心神无惧，然四望荒凉，无一人与之所托，不免魂守悲戚，于是电话与母，得慰言方复儿心，儿方以安宿。

曾是时，母怀胎十月，惜已不易，诞子一刻，裂痛撕心，母未惧，方得子之今日。及儿发如今，愈知世事不易，晓母劳家之艰;然子资质愚劣，几近排母意，常不思学事，乃至心伤与母，此诚儿所不肖也。

儿性顽劣，尝入于厨间，举刀戏之，不慎，指触于刺刃，流红绕掌，见于母，母惶然无措，不知以何御，乃以巾沾水敷之;斥怪子之闹举，亦痛心子之伤创，愿其体伤创十倍以代之。身体发肤，受之于父母，创之，即子不孝，又何间此怜者?只子为母心之所寄也。反以观子，前日母寿，子不曾记，错之而不知，母虽无责意，然儿诚惶殊心惊，此心之失，何外物与之补邪?儿曾习读古史，每常讥于逆子祸女，心以不屑，然儿今日亦踏足成空，此身即为曾之所恨，儿心所悲，及今不忘。

虽至于此，子亦不曾失母之教诲，母常肃色及儿言：“人生于世，首知以仁，次知以学;首负以诚，次负以金;仁诚不至为人者，才愈大，其害亦无穷也。”此言儿常铭于心石，惶失之而折魂，断不可无。

及然，提笔空叹，任绪思万千，惜格幅限之，无以余墨陈一而述，乃合笔于此，望母知意止谅。
