An American film actor once said, “Tomorrow is important and precious.”

Some people think individuals and society should pay more attention to the future than to the present. Do you agree or disagree?

Some countries have an ever-increasing proportion of population who are aged 15 and younger. What is your opinion of the current and future effects it may have in those countries.

Some people think that international travel makes them prejudiced rather than broad-minded. Give the reason why people cannot benefit from travel and how to improve the understanding of countries you visit.

1, 语法(syntax);

2, 词汇(lexical source);

3, 应题(task response);

4, 连贯性(consistency);

First , energy and other natural resources have become more abundant , not less so , since the book ‘ The Limits to Growth ’ was published by a group of scientists .

Some corpora attempt to cover the language as a whole; others are extremely selective.

【Humans should not use animals as sources of food and clothing. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?】

animal-right

blood-thirsty

In ancient times, there was no opposition to the exploitation of animals. But now many animal-right activists object to consumption of animals as sources of food and clothing. I would not go along with their viewpoint. It may be true that animal consumption poses threats to our lives. For instance, not only is the hunting of endangered species such as whaling blood-thirsty, it can also ruin the ecosystem. Since citizens are increasingly aware of the far-reaching impact of the extinction of endangered species, it is reasonable for the government to regulate the consumption of endangered species as food and clothing.

Every year, millions of animals undergo painful suffering or death as a result of scientific research into the effects of drugs, cosmetics and other chemical products. While most people think animal testing is necessary, others are upset by what they see as needless suffering. This essay will look at some of the positive and negative aspects of animal testing. Many medical treatments have been developed from experiments on animals. Since animal share many features with humans, scientists use animals to test the safety and effectiveness of newly developed drugs before testing on small groups of patients. Medical teams practice new operation techniques such as transplants on animals, too. Without animal testing, many new drugs would be extremely unsafe.

【Some people think that international tourism brings more problems than benefits. What is your view?】

International tourism has been booming since the end of the Cold War era. Yet more negative comments can be heard about it now. Complaints about this industry are mostly concerned with the ecological damage it may cause such as trash on the streets and in the parks. However, promotion of ecotourism seems to have made international tourists increasingly aware of irresponsible, eco-unfriendly acts (e.g. , littering) and have relieved the ecological side effects of international tourism effectively. As for the claim that tourism may result in travelers' disrespect for the local culture, I seriously question its legitimacy. As we all probably know, international travel is always a major investment that is, the money, time and energy spent during an overseas trip amount to very high costs. I doubt that many people would like to pay such high costs for traveling to a place whose culture they dislike or even despise.

Many individuals strongly oppose this attitude though, they think if tourists do not follow the local way of life they may make serious mistakes, which in turn may cause clashes between the guests and the hosts. For example, Asian tourists may make their waiters or waitresses very upset if they do not follow the age-old custom of tipping after they have meals in North American restaurants. As a matter of fact, if tourists follow the customs of the local people, they get the really experience and understand different cultures, which is probably the primary intended goal of most overseas trips. My own view is, over all, travelers should honor and cherish the cultural identity of their destinations while being expected to hold on to their own, which will make both the hosts and the guests feel respected and valued.

【Nowadays, international tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Unfortunately. International tourism creates tension rather than understanding between people from different cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?】

The growth of tourism and the numbers of people travelling to other countries for their vacations has led to debate as to whether this is beneficial. I believe that there are many problems that arise out of the tourist industry, and will examine these in detail. Many people argue that travel broadens the mind. However, this statement does not fully hold water. I would argue that spending a few weeks in another country is not long enough to gain a proper understanding of an alien culture. A foreigner visiting Britain might be met with the traditional British reserve, and mistakenly conclude that the British are unfriendly. Furthermore, some people are unwilling to open their minds. A Western traveller to an Arab country is unlikely to consider that the veiling of women is acceptable.

Being a tourist in a foreign country brings with it problems that can lead to dislike of the native people. Firstly, a foreigner is vulnerable, and is often ripped off by the locals. Secondly, the language barrier can lead to misunderstandings. Thirdly, tourists are often hassled to buy goods, which can ruin a holiday. When I went to Bali, people tried to sell me something every five minutes, and this totally spoil my sunbathing. Local people often end up disliking foreigners. Visitors may mistakenly act contrary to local norms, or they may just be plain offensive.

Global tourism can lead to hostility from the native people who may feel their traditional way of life is under threat. Additionally, the relative wealth of the foreign visitors can cause envy and resentment. In conclusion, I would say that I largely agree with the argument that global tourism creates misunderstanding between people from different cultures, and that the differences are often a cause for conflict rather than celebration.

【Creative artists should always be given the freedom to express their ideas. To what extent do you agree?】

On the contrary, sometimes these artists tend to be unscrupulous. They convert rumors into facts and present them before us. This might impair the reputation of some illustrious people in today's society. On such occasions, certain restrictions are understandable. Nevertheless, we all do know what is right or wrong. Rules and regulations not always are the solution to how artists present their own ideas. Hence it is wrong-headed to be impetuous and the government should enforce alternative ways to control the media. Respect for one's ideas is not only hypothetical, but must be practised. It is through respect that each one of us can be recognised as a unique person in the world. This can be achieved by looking at the bright side of what the media display for us. Not a day can go by when we don't look out for colorful dreams and a beautiful life when we can find either through music, poetry, films, pictures everything that the creative artists offer us.

【Fashion trends are difficult to follow these days and it is widely believed that they primarily exist just to sell clothes. Some people believe that we should not follow them and that we should dress in what we like. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?】

It is widely believed in today's world that the latest innovative fashion trends hold great significance. On the other hand, such trends are believed to be set only in the pursuit of profits for large designer companies. It seems that in recent times, people are now changing their minds in regards to wearing clothes for comfort and as a personal choice. Personally I agree that we should pay more attention to individuality and comfort in the way we dress. Firstly, fashion designs exist as a form of creative artistic expression of the designer. Although this may be true, undoubtedly such designs take away individuality once a trend is set in place. By this I mean that there is nothing unique about wearing what everybody else does. More specifically, if everyone wears the latest colour and design in summer skirts, do we not look the same?

【Some people think that international tourism brings more problems than benefits. What is your view?】

On the other hand, the benefits that international tourism can yield are truly overwhelming. Cultural communication between counties has been strengthened as tourists can learn about the local culture and spread their own culture by interacting with the local residents during their tips, which surely promotes mutual understanding and friendship. International tourism can be economically beneficial as well because it contributes to local people's incomes and the government revenue. Part of this money can then be used by the locals to protect the culture heritage such as ancient structures. In conclusion, it seems to mean that negative effects of international tourism can be reduced if the international tourists are better prepared for their overseas trips culturally.

【Some people think that education and training are more effective ways to deal with criminals than sending them to prison. To what extent do you agree or disagree?】

Regarding the treatment of criminals, two options may sound reasonable: jail terms and rehabilitation programmes. I believe rehabilitation programmes are more valuable. Although rehabilitation programmes often come at great costs to the public, imprisonment of criminals can be much more expensive. Its psychological costs are even higher if we consider the fact that it deprives criminals of their freedom, while rehabilitation provides offenders with self-respect. When it comes to the prevention of crimes, rehabilitation equips criminals with the ability to make a living, which will reduce their chance of committing a crime again. In fact, education and training not only offer criminals more career options, they may will lead to productive lives after the programme finishes. To some people, it may seem unfair that criminals receive tax-funded education and training. But it is not so unfair if we understand that it is in everybody's interest to reintroduce these people back into social life. For all these reasons, I think rehabilitation programmes are necessary. Through them, criminals not only acquire skills, but learn about the importance of socially acceptable behaviour as well.

【Humans should not use animals as sources of food and clothing. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?】

However, in terms of economic and social development, forbidding consumption of animal products altogether is not necessarily sound advice. Some species may become overpopulated without control, which can interfere with people's daily lives. Take kangaroos in Australia for example. In the 1990s, the overpopulation of kangaroos had seriously reduced the crop yield and caused traffic problems until the government allowed some people to hunt kangaroos for their meat. As a matter of fact, appropriate consumption of non-endangered species as sources of food and clothing would not damage the ecosystem. On the contrary, it can help to promote healthy interaction between humans and the wildlife. For example, a reasonable amount of daily intake of animal products can strengthen our immune system, which can protect us against contagious diseases. In summary, even though I agree that the hunting of endangered species should be banned, I would argue that the benefits of using non-endangered animals as sources of food and clothing are still significant.

【The map below is of the town of Garlsdon. A new supermarket ( S) is planned for the town. The map shows two possible sites for the supermarket.】

Garlsdon;

Hindon;

Cransdon.

( S1)

以及:

no-traffic zone;

out-of-town.

In contrast, the suggested location, S2, is right in the town center, which would be good for local residents. Theoretically, the store could be accessed by road or rail from the surrounding towns, including Bransdon. But in reality, as the central area is a no-traffic zone, cars would be unable to park and access would be difficult. Overall, neither site is appropriate for all the towns, but for customers in Cransdon, Hindon and Garlsdon, the out-of-town site ( S1) would probably offer more advantages.

【Some people believe that children are given too much free time. They feel that this time should be used to do more schoolwork. To what extent do you agree or disagree? 】

The issue of whether children are given too much free time, in my view, it's not about the amount of free time they have, but about whether this time can be spent in socially productive activities. Clearly, giving students an excessive amount of spare time after school may cause a series of problems. Young students are at the best stage in their lives to acquire knowledge and skills, if this precious period is occupied with idle activities, they will have to do much more to compete with their peers when they become adults. What can be more disturbing is the possible increase in children's miss behaviour and even offenses after school. Some teenagers may linger on the streets instead of staying with their parents or guardians, which makes it very likely for them to be involved in criminal acts. Not only does school work can include writing essays and research papers, it may also offer a variety of social activities. Such as group discussions or preparation for team presentations, which hones children's cooperative skills. So it seems children should indeed spend more time on their schoolwork.

【In some countries, traditional arts are going extinct. Some people think that we should try to keep them. To what extent you agree?】

Those who object to preserving the traditional arts may think that it would lay a heavy burden on the government's budgets. These people fail to recognise the economic value of the traditional arts. Since some arts symbolise the local or national culture, they can be used to boost the local tourism and economy. A good example illustrating this point is the native arts in Australia where many aboriginal people make a living by selling traditional-style handicrafts. As far as eye can see, laying at the heart of this issue is not even whether we should rescue traditional arts from the brink of extinction, but how we can make the efforts to keep them alive more efficient and effective.

【Modern technology is creating one single world culture. To what extent do you agree or disagree?】

Through the ages, man has undergone many changes. Modern technology is rapidly changing the world's living standards, which results in creating a single world culture. I believe new technologies including the Internet, television, electronic media, means of transportation, etc., have great impact on creating a similar culture all around the globe. Below I will list my reasons to support my opinion. First of all, the Internet and e-mail have changed the way people communicate with each other. Internet brought many benefits. It is a new means of communication and a fast access to information and news. People communicate with each other and share our ideas, happiness and difficulties. We have a great opportunity to find out more about countries and their history.

【Many people ignore basic science today. What are the causes and what are your solutions?】

While technological developments are constantly covered by the mass media, basic science is hardly getting any attention from the public. I tend to believe the public ignorance of basic science research is largely due to its unpredictable value. Compared with applied technology that can produce almost immediate benefits, basic science does not have short-term financial potential. In contrast, to develop basic science, scientists have to devote a great deal of time and energy to their research, while being very uncertain if this devotion will lead to the intended outcomes. Many scientists become dissatisfied with their working conditions and earnings and in the end, they choose to leave their laboratories for other jobs, which can help to explain why basic science is often ignored by the public. Since basic science is the foundation of most technological developments, some steps must be taken to reverse this trend. On the national level, the government should fulfill its responsibility in raising public awareness of the significance of basic science. Only when the government gives priority to this field in its policy can basic science get the funding and the public support that is urgently needed. Also, companies and institutes should financially support scientists who commit themselves to basic science, not just for the sake of profit, but for the development of science as well. Additionally, the public should be made aware that there would be very few technological advancements if basic science were largely ignored. Basic science deserves more public attention. Certainly none of us want it to become a completely stagnant field due to our ignorance.

【Advertisements play a major role on TV in market economies. Despite the benefits of such information, many people criticize the role of TV advertising.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with their view?】

Unlike the Internet, where we can often disable advertising windows, we cannot screen TV advertisements out of our lives. The question is, is the price worth paying? Let us consider some of the points that may be made in defence of TV advertising. Firstly, advertisements provide information, and information is essential to a modern economy because it brings those who have products and services into contact with those who want to buy. Indeed, advertisements are the most efficient means of such communication and help to keep the price of consumer goods down. Secondly, the advertising industry is a significant source of employment. Thirdly, advertisements are often charming and well-filmed, a source of entertainment in themselves.

【In some countries, traditional arts are going extinct. Some people think that we should try to keep them. To what extent you agree?】

Today, many types of traditional arts and crafts are struggling on the brink of extinction. People have different attitudes toward this trend. As for me, I believe that traditional arts should still be cherished by us. Traditional arts are national treasures handed down from our ancestors; therefore, it is our responsibility as inheritors to keep them alive. A nation without abundant traditional arts, such as folk music, ethnic drawings or painting would feel rootless. Consequently, should those brilliant traditional arts die out, the nation's sense of belonging would be seriously eroded. Even worse once a form of traditional art disappears in history, it could never be truly revived. Only until then will the people realize that is a great loss, which at best would only result in nostalgia and regrets.

【Zoos keep wild animals in a man-made environment. To what extent do you think the advantages of zoos outweigh their disadvantages?】

Normally, it is better for wild animals to live in a natural environment. Unfortunately, now such environments are often under threat. In my essay, I will compare the relative advantages of animals living in the wild and in zoos. Most wild animals live longer in zoos than in the wild because zoo keepers can look after their health and their diet. When an animal is sick, there are veterinarians in the zoo to help it. As a result, animals in a zoo can have longer life expectancy than animals in the wild. Zoos are also useful tools for us to reduce our harm to wildlife brought about by damage to the land and the sea. Many zoos around the world now take part in programs to educate children about the importance of preserving wildlife and they work together to find ways to take care of animals. In fact, today some rare species exist only in zoos, which means if all the zoos are closed, these animals will completely disappear from our planet.

【Life was better when technology was simpler. To what extent do you agree or disagree?】

Modern technology has revolutionised life in three main fields: work, transport and communication. Although modern technology is often blamed for stress and alienation, I doubt that many people would want to turn back the clock to the pre-technological age. Despite the fact that life was simpler in former times, I would prefer not to return to that lifestyle, because that simplicity was due to a lack of choice. Before large jet airliners came in in the 1960s, for example, air travel was beyond the reach of most people. Before electronic cash registers, people had to spend a lot of time on math calculations to carry out transactions. Furthermore, our knowledge of the world around us, especially foreign countries, was sketchy before television brought us the vivid images of documentaries. Modern technology has brought liberation from the exhausting and boring labour and has set us free to enjoy more interesting work and leisure.

【Television has had a significant influence on the culture of many societies. To what extent do you think television has positively or negatively affected cultural development?】

Pat

It has been around forty years since television was first introduced into British households and people today still have mixed views on whether it has a positive or a negative influence on society. Many people believe that television damages culture. It promotes the stronger culture of countries such as Britain and the US and weakens the culture of less wealthy countries. This is because the stronger countries are able to assert their own culture by producing more programmes that are shown widely around the world. These programmes then influence people, particularly young people, in the countries where they are shown.

【Some people think students should take courses that are decided by the government.

Others think students should be allowed to focus on subjects that they prefer.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.】

Education has been viewed as one of the most essential elements of individual and social development. One topic now under debate is who should make the decisions on what students study. Academically, students will gain benefits if the curriculum can be devised by the government. Learners need foundations before they acquire more advanced knowledge. Without opportunities to learn the basics, students would find it difficult to further their studies or lose interest in their studies altogether. In terms of meeting the demand of the job market, it would be more efficient if the government plan and arrange the courses for school and universities. Students' own selections of courses may be random. Most of them do not really know what the job market expects from them, so some guidance from the government is a necessity. However, this does not mean that the official curriculum is always productive. Educators should be aware of the fact that individuals have different characters and abilities. If all the students in a certain field take the same courses, their potential may not be fully developed. Accordingly, many talented students may feel frustrated with learning and the nation will not get the talent it needs for its advancement. My own opinion is that students in primary and secondary schools should take courses that the governments choose for them because they do not really have the capacity to find out courses that will serve their purposes. On the university level, though, students should be allowed to participate in the decision-making process of designing the curriculum as only in this way can their academic potential be fully explored.

Unit 4 listening activity No. 8

Question 4

What does the student worry about now?

A her English study hours

B that her qualifications may not be accepted here

C her working experience in her own country

D her tutoring at school

I am worried about my English. You see I am worried about not understanding people very well. Well, in this country, it seems that it is very difficult for me to get a job. They want experience in this country and I have not got any. My qualifications may not be accepted here and ………。.I am really worried.

My qualifications may not be accepted here。

如:keep to oneself 替换 be not friendly

The passengers were rescued by boats and pleasure-craft 替换 Boats and pleasure-craft came to rescue the passengers.

The bottles made in most places contain about three-quarters new glass and the rest is recycled.

Most bottle makers use about __% recycled glass.

1. This is a tough question. I have never heard about it, nor have I ever read about it (倒装句丰富句型).

2. Give me a few seconds for me to search every piece of information in my head now.

3. It is an abstract question. I know little about it.

4. Are you asking me something about+你重复一下句子中的关键词…?

5. Have I given enough information? It would be great if you could give me more.

6. Am I making myself clear?

7. Now you want me to talk about it. But I don't have too much to say.

8. Give me a few seconds for me to organize my thought a little bit.

1.“ well”

2.“you know”

3.“actually”

4.“I mean”

5.“personally”

6.“to be honest”

7.“on the other hand”

8. “frankly”

“as a matter of fact”等等,这些表达也叫discourse marker (语篇标记),也就是并不改变句子本质意思的语言填充物。

1) 场景一,当你没有听懂时,可用:Could you please paraphrase (转述)that question/topic?/I’m not exactly sure what you mean +某一个生词…

I’m not exactly sure how to answer that question, but perhaps+

That’s rather difficult question, but I wonder if could give me more information about that.

I’m sorry, but I don’t know much about…

1.That’s difficult to answer, but (maybe)…

2.I’m sorry, but I don’t know much about…but perhaps…

3.Maybe I can answer your question by telling you about a personal experience I had.

4.That’s an interesting question…let me see. Well, I suppose that…

5.Yes, that’s a big issue.

1.In other words, I am…

2.And that means…

3.Let me put it another way,…

4.What I’m suggesting is…

5.All I’m trying to say is…

6.What I’m getting at is…

7.If I can rephrase that…

8.Perhaps I should make that clearer by saying…

9.Perhaps it would be more accurate to say…

10.The point I’m making is that…

1.Have I given you enough information?

2.Would you like me to tell you more about…?

3.Is that all you’d like to know?

1.I’m afraid that’s about as much as I know.

2.I think that’s all.

3.I can’t think of anything else right now…

4.Is there anything else you wish to know?

定语从句:that, which(介词+which), who,…

寻找平衡结构:三大连词 and/or/but,

not only…but also…

not…but…

no more/longer/less …than

as…as

not so …as… . . .

除了be动词外,还有一些there be形式的变体:

There come/comes/came

There appear/appears/appeared

There emerge/emerges/emerged

There may/might be

There can/could be

There happen to be

There used to be

There is/are going to be

Patients and doctors alike have long believed in the healing (治疗) power of humor. It is claimed that humor not only affects patients’ moods, but can actually help them recover faster.

Several studies seem to support this. Patients in better spirits are known to have higher immune cell counts. Some have even claimed to have healed themselves of serious illnesses by reading comics and watching comedies.

Despite all this, many researchers are not convinced. They point out the fact that many sufferings have been known to disappear naturally, with or without a daily dose of laughter. They also say that while optimism in general does seem to be related to better health, it is hard to tell which comes first.

Humor in times of stress, however, clearly makes us feel better. On one level, it takes our minds off our troubles and relaxes us. On another, it releases powerful endorphins, a chemical produced by your body that reduces pain.

There are cases where the appreciation of a good joke is indeed directly related to a person’s health. It can show, for example, whether a person has suffered damage to one particular area of the brain: the right frontal lobe (额叶).

Scientists confirmed this by having people read jokes and asking them to choose the funniest endings from a list. Subjects with normal brains usually chose endings that were based on a relatively complex synthesis (综合) of ideas. Subjects with specifically located brain damage, however, responded only to slapstick (闹剧) endings, which did not depend on a particular context. When pressed, the brain-damaged subjects saw the logic in the correct endings. They simply did not find them funny.

Of course, humor is largely an individual matter. Next time your friend does not get one of your jokes, there is no need to accuse him of being a lamebrain. However, you might suggest that he lighten up—for the health of it.

58. We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. all researchers have agreed on the healing power of humor

B. people seldom accuse their friends of not understanding jokes

C. the author holds a positive attitude to the healing power of humor

D. reading comics will surely become a popular way of treating diseases

59. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Many researchers are not convinced of the healing power of humor.

B. Patients in bad moods are known to have higher immune cell counts.

C. Optimism in general does seem to be related to better health.

D. People should try their best to cheer up for their good health.

60. Scientists had some people read jokes and asked them to choose the funniest endings from a list to confirm that ________.

A. the brain-damaged people are different from those with normal brains

B. a person with a normal brain usually responds to slapstick endings

C. a person suffering certain brain damage doesn’t appreciate a good joke

D. humor takes our minds off our troubles by releasing powerful endorphins

61. Which would be the best title for the passage?

A. Which comes first, humor or health? B. Humor can cure different illnesses

C. People need humor in times of stress D. Humor contributes to good health

The Economist 、New Scientist 、time、Nature、Discover等。
