As a young man, Al was a skilled artist, a potter with a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal(肠的) disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously . But the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. In time Al became an alcoholic.
As the alcoholism progressed, AL began to lose everything he possessed -- his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al's death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure! ”
As time went by , I began to revalue my earlier rough judgement . I knew Al's now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring , most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere .
I hadn't heard Ernie talked much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ”love you, son.“
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what I had been a fool to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.

It is strange how certain things make a great impression on us in childhood. I rememberthese verses by Longfellow:

When I was fifteen I had an imaginary guardian angel and when I went to the country tosketch on Sundays, I asked for guidance, praying that someday I would be a fine artist andpaint nature as beautiful as she really is. What this little ceremony brought me was faith in theworld and a belief in myself.
My faiths and beliefs have been badly strained. The Atomic Age has caught us in a web of fear.Our lives seem so impermanent and uncertain. There is such a waste of human potential, ofthings worth while in people which never find expression. I sometimes think it's a miracle thatanything survives. Yet I believe that a thread of permanence runs through everything from thebeginning of time, and the most valuable residue will survive.
I believe everybody has an urge to somehow spin his own life into a thread of permanence. Itis the impulse of life. Some would call it the drive to immortality. Whatever it is, I think it isgood because it gives purpose to existence. But purpose is not enough. Artists are supposedto be notoriously impractical, but for myself, I found I had to make decisions and plans if Iwere to try to create anything. I realized that I must approach life not only with a sensitivity,a perception of beauty, but with a feeling of humility and reverence.
My creed as an artist is to love life and liberty and the world of people. A man who works andloves his work is often a man dreaming, and the spirit of his dreams will find forms andsymbols to express that dream. It is a wonderful feeling to create something. But today, Ithink there is a lack of power of communication. If people, not just artists, but all kinds ofpeople, could only open their hearts and express their sorrow, their happiness, their fears andhopes, they would discover they had an identity with the main stream of life which they neversaw before.

“B” - you believe that you were given some unexpected and extra time to spend in solitude,to listen to a great tape or to plan your day.

“C” - the consequence is that you feel gratitude for the gift of time.

I have a friend who is fond of saying, “A traffic jam has no power to make us angry. It juststops our car.” He is aware that between the activating event and the consequence issomething that we control: our beliefs about what is happening.

The next time you have a problem -- at home or at work, big or small -- decide to manage yourattitude toward it. Practice the A-B-C method.

You probably can't change “A,” the activating event. But try changing “B,” your beliefs aboutthe problem. When you change your beliefs, you also change “C,” the consequences of thesituation.
