Some holidays are so much fun that they catch on outside of their culture. The most obvious example is probably Christmas, which is celebrated around the world by people who aren’t even Christian. Similarly, in recent years, the Dragon Boat Festival has moved beyond China to become an international holiday celebrated by people who may know little about the holiday’s origins.
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of three major Chinese holidays, along with the Spring and Moon Festivals. Of the three, it is possibly the oldest, dating back to the Warring States Period in 227 B.C. The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a minister in the service of the Chu Emperor. Despairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himself into a river. Townspeople jumped into their boats and tried in vain to save him. Then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the people scattered rice on the water.
Over the years, the story of Qu’s demise transformed into the traditions of racing dragon boats and eating zongzi C a kind of rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. The races have certainly captured the imagination of people from all over the world. Every spring there are nearly 60 dragon boat races held outside of China in cities from Vancouver to Sydney, from Gdask, Poland to Cape Town, South Africa. Canada alone has nearly 50 dragon boat teams and Germany has nearly 30.
So what is it about the Dragon Boat Festival that appeals to foreigners? “It’s an unusual sport,” says one racer from Germany. “It’s not like everybody’s doing it. That’s one of the reasons that there’s such great team spirit in a dragon boat team C everybody feels like we’re doing something special.” And what about the zongzi? “Ehhh, they’re not bad, I guess,” he says. “Something of an acquired taste. I just haven’t really acquired it yet.”

The fifth day of the fifth lunar month is a traditional Chinese festival dedicated to the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan for his devotion to his native state.
Qu Yuan lived in the state of Chu during the Warring States period . Chu was in condtant danger of being invaded by the state of Qin, the strongest among the seven states then existing in central china. As one of the dukes, Qu Yuan advocated that Chu should join forces with the neighboring state of Qi to fight against Qin s troops. However, his patriotism and dedication were betrayed by capitulators who slandered him. The king of Chu believed them and sent Qu Yuan into exile. He wrote many immortal masterpieces exposing the corrupt and incompetent feudal regime. In his autobiographic works he expresses his political position and his ambition of rejuvenating his state. When Qu Yuan heard that Qin troops had occupied the Chu capital, he threw himself into the Miluo River in despair on the fifth day the fifth lunar month.
Local people honor the memory of Qu Yuan on this day by holding dragon-boat races. It is said that the boat races were regarded as a symbol of the people s attempt to rescue Qu Yuan. For a long time now they have been a popular sport. China has a long history of making big wooden boats sport. The prow is a carved dragon s head, and the body id made in a dragon-like shape or following the design of fish, birds or shrimp. It is painted red, yellow, black or white according to the taste of the oarsmen. Different size boats hold different numbers of oarsmen, seated in pairs. Boat races are held in rivers going either up or downstream or from bank to bank, following the strict rules and regulations set by the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission. 王安石轶事
拗相公
明末冯梦龙纂辑的《警世通言》，有《拗相公饮恨半山堂》，写王安石变法失败的事。王安石告老还乡时，沿途所见所闻，都是百姓对变法的不满和怨愤，因之抑郁、悔恨而逝。文中写道：“因他性子执拗，佛菩萨也劝他不转，人皆呼为‘拗相公’。”
三不足
“天变不足畏，祖宗不足法，人言不足恤”，这话并不是王安石所说，却符合他的思想，因此，一般都将它归到王安石名下。“天变不足畏”指的是对自然界的灾异不必畏惧;“祖宗不足法”是指对前人制定的法规制度不应盲目效法，“人言不足恤”指的是对流言蜚语无需顾虑。后世对这三句话多加褒奖，认为它表达了一位改革家无所畏惧的精神态度。王安石正是以这种精神毅力来顶住一切压力、排除一切阻力，坚定不移推行新法的。
清廉朴素
王安石做宰相的'时候，儿媳妇家的亲戚萧公子到了京城，就去拜访了王安石，王安石邀请他吃饭。第二天，萧氏子穿盛装前往，料想王安石一定会用盛宴招待他。过了中午，他觉得很饿，可是又不敢就这样离开。又过了很久，王安石才下令入座，菜肴都没准备。萧公子心里觉得很奇怪，喝了几杯酒，才上了两块胡饼，再上了四份切成块的肉，上饭后，旁边只安置了菜羹罢了。萧氏子很骄横放纵，只吃胡饼中间的一小部分，把四边都留下。王安石就把剩下的饼拿过来吃了，那个萧公子很惭愧地告辞了。
不迩声色
王安石任知制诰时，王安石的妻子吴氏，给王安石置一妾。那女子前去伺候王安石，王安石问：“你是谁?”女子说自己是“家欠官债、被迫卖身”而来。王安石听罢，不仅没收她为妾，还送钱给她，帮助她还清官债，使其夫妇破镜重圆。
有人告诉王安石的夫人，说她丈夫喜欢吃鹿肉丝。在吃饭时他不吃别的菜，只把那盘鹿肉丝吃光了。夫人问，你们把鹿肉丝摆在了什么地方?大家说，摆在他正前面。夫人第二天把菜的位置调换了一下，鹿肉丝放得离他最远。结果，人们才发现，王安石只吃离他近的菜，桌子上照常摆着鹿肉丝，他竟完全不知道。
千锤百炼
王安石作《泊船瓜洲》(京口瓜洲一水间，钟山只隔数重山。春风又绿江南岸，明月何时照我还)，第三句最初写作“春风又到江南岸”，觉得不好，后来改为“过”字，读了几遍，又嫌不好;又改为“入”字，然后又改为“满”字，换了十多个字，最后才确定为“绿”字： “春风又绿江南岸”。
