Dear x,

My three major interests and passions are Computer Science, Maths andMusic, and I believe that there is a creative fusion between all thesedisciplines. I engage wholeheartedly in these areas both in my school coursesand out of school, and hope that I will be able to continue doing so on mychosen course and in the extra-curricular opportunities at university.

Computer Science has quite naturally come to be my chosen field. At the ageof 7, I took to playing the piano, which planted the first seeds of my interestin defined logical patterns and structure. My introduction to computing was viathe logic of spreadsheets, but I then progressed to using BASIC for severalapplications outside lessons, including programming my own version of ‘Logo’ andan analogue clock. A major recent achievement of mine has been designing adatabase-driven website for my school’s Maths department, including multi-formathomework question publication and report generation. This is extensively used bythe department, and other departments have approached me to provide them withsimilar websites. This project was nominated and then short-listed for the finalten of the New Statesman’s “New Media (Educational)” award.

I look forward to studying Artificial Intelligence, and have made my ownminor foray into this area by designing and developing a computer-poweredConnect 4 player using a complex ‘minimax’ procedure. I also investigated‘recurring function execution’ to simulate the ‘fill’ function of a paintpackage, an algorithm of which was used to develop a ‘random maze’ generator.Such mathematical-based logic led to an increased appetite especially forresearching the use of computing with mathematics – I extensively investigated‘perfect numbers’, determining the 8th perfect number (2305843008139952128).

I involve myself in the full life of the school and am pleased to have waysof passing on my enthusiasms to others. I have been appointed a Maths Prefect, which involves running a weekly Maths club, and also helping younger students in‘work recovery’ sessions. I was also elected onto the School Council for 4 yearsin my previous school.

My passion for music has further developed in secondary school and led toeager participation in school musical productions for four years as the mainpianist (which led to my employment as accompanist for a professional operasinger and singing teacher). I have achieved grade 8 at piano, and havethoroughly enjoyed performing regularly at a variety of venues such as weddings, retirement homes, at charity events, for the visually impaired, and most of all,the opportunity to conduct an orchestra at Fairfield Hall performing my owncomposition. I am looking forward to playing the 3rd Movement of Tchaikovsky’s1st Piano Concerto with the school orchestra this December, exhibiting my lovefor classical music, especially given that my favourite works are those ofDebussy and Tchaikovsky.

I was delighted recently when I was given the opportunity to combine mymusical pursuits and computer interests by my employment for a commercialsoftware company writing music. I have much appreciated being able to develop myabove interests alongside enjoyment of hobbies such as Table-tennis, chess, andreading of a broad spectrum of books.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My passion for psychology is deeply rooted in my interest in philosophy, epistemology and the understanding of human happiness. I sincerely believe in the practical benefits of a life spent helping others, fully investing in the cultivation of empathy and compassion. With this end in mind I have always sought out challenging and rewarding opportunities to work with people and to study human relationships and problems.

I have had a long history of psychology related work experiences. I was first employed at the Salt Lake City International Airport assisting physically and mentally disabled passengers navigate the terminal. Although the spectrum of mental illness I was exposed to at this job was small compared to a lot of my later positions, the airport served as a magnifying glass for human diversity and opened my eyes to the world beyond my local culture. There are few places on earth where you can find so much ethnic, cultural, religious and ideological diversity so densely packed into a single building.

I was later employed as a Psychology, English and Math tutor for Weber State University working one on one with students by appointment. This job allowed for much more intimate, collaborative relationships and taught me a lot about the process of learning. At this point I officially switched my major from civil engineering to psychology and my general interest in philosophy and epistemology began to focus through psychology.

I then worked as a Lead Staff at several different residential assisted living facilities for individuals with developmental disabilities. I worked closely with clients on a daily basis, often spending nights at the homes on sleep or waking graves or working doubles taking clients to company events and activities. This was not simply a job for me, but a subculture I was completely immersed in as many of my close friends worked for the same company and we served the same population of developmentally delayed individuals in the Ogden area. After leaving this job I later participated in community service through a company called enable that employed many of the clients I had worked with previously.

Following avatar, I began employment as a Mental Health Worker on a youth sex offender unit at Benchmark Behavioral Health Hospital. I had the opportunity to sit in on group therapy sessions and to observe the peer interactions throughout the day. This was a very intense work environment, filled nearly daily with extreme violence and verbal aggression. The turnover was incredibly high at this job, and I learned to operate professionally in a high stress environment. I witnessed and was part of some powerful emotional experiences at this job. I watched the adolescents grow into adults and deal with some very serious issues stemming from dark and troubled pasts. It was when a young patient who seemed emotionally numb since his arrival opened up to me in the timeout room, crying for over an hour about his regrets and frustrations that I decided definitely that I wanted to pursue clinical psychology. I'll never forget him saying, “It just feels good to tell someone you know, to talk about all this stuff, thanks for listening to me”.

I currently work as a Psychiatric Technician at the University of Utah State Hospital, as an Employment Counselor for the State of Utah, and as a research assistant at the University. As a Psychiatric Technician I see patients at their most acute symptoms. Since it is a crisis ward, I have the opportunity to interact with patients when they are first admitted and have been through very recent psychological and/or physical trauma. Patients are often extremely delusional and having homicidal and suicidal ideations. As a psychiatric tech I have seen first hand a wide variety of diagnosis and what those diagnosis translate to in terms of actual personally observed behavior.

I am also currently working with Dr. Diamond on a study looking at the formation and functioning of adolescent and adult attachment relationships, as well as the different ways our attachment styles affect our closest relationships over long periods of time. As a research assistant, the nature of the study is such that I am involved in a wide variety of experimental techniques. At the lab I have experience with video editing, dvd dubbing, data entry, several forms of physiological equipment placement and data recording, as well as many general computer and organizational tasks. I have had direct exposure with participants in the study and seen first hand how these participants' experiences in the lab translate to data.

I am particularly interested in working with Dr. Strassberg as much of his work deals with human sexuality and my interest in this area is substantial. Having worked with sex offender youth I would love to be involved in any research in the area of adolescent sexual disorders or dysfunction. I find Dr. Florsheim's research of interest as well particularly the Adolescent Development and Outreach program. Aside from my desire to work with troubled youth, my other research interests are quite broad ranging from ACT therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, the psychology of faith and religion, effective parenting styles, cohabitation, and marriage.

Throughout my life these experiences have allowed me to work closely with people, and many have allowed for and encouraged the development of therapeutic relationships with patients or customers. This work experience has been very valuable in exposing me to real world scenarios where people are struggling to cope with mental and/or physical illness. Being involved directly and indirectly with many different organizations that work to improve the lives of these individuals has helped me to gain a better more eclectic perspective on the treatment of mental illness in our society. The knowledge I have gained from my schooling and my actual patient exposure work together to form a solid foundation of practical and technical knowledge about clinical psychology and mental illness in general. Although my work could hardly be considered equitable to working as a licensed therapist, the experiences have done a lot in preparing me and priming my mind for more serious and involved study for psychology in graduate school.

Yours sincerely,

Economics and Finance Personal Statement

Having a flair for Economics and accounting I have decided that I want a degree in Accounting and Finance or Management. The many brilliant representatives of the management community around the world have strengthened that resolve.

When I worked in my school as a tutor of English as a Second Language for students from a community school in Muscat, I realized the importance of a strong leader who could organize, command respect, and be able to work well with others. These ideas were further enforced by my month long internship at Novartis Pharmaceutical (Accounts and Finance Department and Human Resources Department).

I attended the Harvard Model Congress in Paris and won the Award of Distinction. One skill in particular that contributed to this award was my confident public speaking.

The last 4 months have been crucial in my learning of real world business and economics. For my IB Extended Essay, titled “To What Extent Does Subway in Oman Operate as an Oligopoly”, I set out to prove the oligpolistic structure of the fast food market in Oman. In this effort, I have come across many real life complexities in pricing behaviour, profit making and other aspects of the Theory of the Firm. While attempting to explain these alternate theories of firms I have developed a keen interest in analyzing and understanding how the world of business works.

After an undergraduate degree in accounting and finance or management I plan to go onto post graduate studies and work on an MBA. A strong performance in a BA will allow me to move onto an MBA and only then shall I be satisfied.

For the last four years I have been part of our schools volleyball team ICE. We have retained our ISAC (Inter Schools Activities Conference, Middle East) title for four years. Playing in the power hitters (spiker) position requires immense physical fitness and to accomplish that I regularly go to the gym for fitness training. I am also part of my school track and field team. Being the fastest sprinter in the school since 11th grade the 100m, 200m and 400m races are my specialty even though I still pursue long distance running. In my spare time I explore and master the computer as I am conversant with a Visual Basic Programming course. It is imperative for me to have the latest hardware and software and I make it a point to install everything myself. I also learn Urdu as it is my native tongue and a link to my culture, to maintain that is crucial.

Living in a diverse international community of over 52 nationalities has allowed to me recognize and appreciate different cultures. With the experience I have and the strong motivation to craft a bright future I feel I can justify my decision to pursue a career in Accounting and Finance or Management.

Dear x,

This document is being submitted in support of my application for admissioninto your program.

Born in June x, I grew up in Lanzhou, a city that boasts of a history ofthousands of years and a cultural heritage that is as colorful as it is old. Fewcities, either in China or beyond, can match it in the richness of architecturalstyles. Stradding the upper Yellow River that sired the Chinese civilization,Lanzhou prides itself in both her past glory laden in the ancient structures onthe north bank and her new found prosperity oozing out of the dazzlinghigh-rises in the south. Although, as a child, I was not always able toarticulate my admiration for such striking contrast, I constantly beheld thecity's landscape in awe. I began to understand, at that young age, thatarchitecture can be a powerful symbol of culture, a people and the spirit of anera.

My first intellectual mentor, one of my parents' best friends, was anartist seasoned in oil painting and photography. She often brought me with herwhen she traveled, and it was on these trips that her creative mind worked infull gear. I thus observed how human hands could work wonders by recreating thebeauty of natural scenery in the form of sketches, paintings and photos. Whatwas more important, I got to know that there are professions of creative workthat calls for imagination and craftsmanship.

Fervent with creative art and fascinated with architectural design, Ientered in 1992 into the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University,China's top engineering school, on the strength of my outstanding performance inthe highly competitive National University Entrance Examinations.

At Tsinghua, I went through five years of vigorous training and thusacquired exquisite skills in drawing and design. Since I understood from earlychildhood that inspiration often comes from nature, I traveled far and widethroughout China's vast territory, setting my foot even in outlying Tibet andXingjiang, both in the country's westernmost interior. These travels allowed meto trace modern China's culture to its different sources, and the variety notonly deeply impressed me but also fired my imagination. In my graduationproject, Cashi Contemporary Art Museum in Xinjiang, I successfully blended anatural environment into my artistic design by using a system of watercirculation to support and sustain the building. As the most significantresource in an agricultural enclave surrounded by desert, water represents hopefor both the people and their land. With the water circulation system, thebuilding took on added vitality.

In mid-, I graduated with my B. S. and took a job as a designer withthe Beijing-based “company.” My career as an architect thus took off.

Once I have settled into the real world of architectural design, Ideveloped my career path quickly, playing substantial roles in a stream ofprojects. To date, my most significant responsibility has been to work as a maindesigner in (a key state) project, in which I led a group of my colleagues inmeeting a daunting challenge. In addition to gaining a profound understanding ofthe technical difficulties necessarily attendant to such large-scale projects, Ilearned to work effectively within a team that also included my clients andcolleagues. The teamwork thus not only strengthened my professional competenceat conceptual and technical design but also honed my leadership skills that canbe put to good use in other situations. As a result, I now feel even moreconfident of myself than I was before.

My experience in general, and the six years of frequent traveling inparticular, has left an indelible mark on my intellectual development. As I cannow readily appreciate a society's cultural, historical and socio-politicalimpact on its architectural styles, I now try to reflect my own cultural andsocial background in my own designs. These days, I view architecture not just asa career but, more importantly, as an expression of my professional progress, and I fell that it is an view more compatible with Western rather than Chinesepedagogy. In any case, I have already been through China's best school forarchitectural studies, and I am convince that the further development of myprofessional qualifications requires more advanced training in a school likeyours. I believe that advanced studies under your seasoned guidance will endowme with a broader vision and more profound insights, with which I can make stillmore contribution to my motherland China.

Yours sincerely,

XXX
