Americans like to go out by car. Although more and more Chinese own cars, most Chinese still like to ride bicycles, This is determined by a lot of factors.

As we all know, the bike advances slowly by manpower, but it can be placed wherever it is convenient However, as for the car, although it can run fast by engine, it must be parked at parking places.

Most Americans live in the suburb which is far from urban areas and their working places. So they need cars to go shopping and go to work. And they also like traveling far. Thus a car brings them great convenience.

On the contrary, most Chinese live near their working areas and markets. They don't need a car to go to work or go shopping.I would like to ride a bike, because it costs little and it is easy to use and won't cause pollution.

I am not a brave girl, I am afraid of losing face in front of my friends and parents, so I always let the chance go and refuse to try. Once, I have a chance to take a performance in the Christmas show, but thinking about if I performed badly, all my friends would laugh at me, so I gave up the chance. But now, I am tired of letting so many chances to go, I want to try, after seeing my friends take all the chances to try, I am not going to be the outsider all the time, I want to live my own life and make some differences.

People say failure is not terrible, the unforgettable thing are to lose the courage to try and then making all kinds of excuses. Let’s take out our courage and do what we want to do.

Language is essential; language is what we use to communicate among others. it is something that joins us just as strongly as it separates us. There are many different languages in the world but really they are all bound by certain rules, they all have a format that they follow, all of them have nouns, verbs, tenses, and adjectives.

Language is almost like a math, the point of it is that when you speak, you try to reach a conclusion with a different person, and in math you use equations to solve problems and reach conclusions, one is numbers the other is words.

Thomas Edison

Born in America, Thomas Edison was a great scientist and inventor. He was once thought to be a boy who was not worth educating. In fact, he was a man full of imagination.

I admire Edison a lot because of his great contribution to the world. He had more than 1,000 inventions. In his lifetime, he was always eager to know how things worked, which helped him to earn the nickname the Wizard of Melo Park .He was also so diligent that he worked day and night. And this explained why he had so many great inventions.

What impresses me most is his famous saying, Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Probably I cannot be an Edison myself, but I can be a hard-working learner. From him, I realize the secret to success is not when or where you were born, but what you are doing and how you do it in your life.

My home town is in the center of Xuzhou which was a quiet and beautiful place. In the past, there were many animals. They were lovely and nice. The air was fresh and there were many birds fly in the sky.

Over the past years, it has changed a lot. At the present, it becomes a modern town and develops a lot. Now, the people in Xuzhou are richer than before, so most of people go to work by bus or by underground. Sometimes, they also drive their private cars to work. Many people sell out their old houses and move into new flats.

In some ways, the development has brought some good things, but it has also causes much environment pollution. I think we should take action to reduce the pollution.

One evening I was going back from a supermarket. As I was approaching my car, I noticed that some person came and stood beside me. He was the one that could be considered as a bum. It seemed that he had no car, no home and no job. I thought that he would ask me for money, but he did not do that, he only said: “Your car is very nice”.

After several moments of silence, I replied: “Thanks”, and then the inner voice told me, “Ask him if he needs help”. After a short hesitation I asked him if he needed any help. His response was astonishing. I will never forget those simple three words that I heard from him: ―“Don’t we all?”

It was a true discovery to me. I needed help. Although I had money and a place to sleep, I recognized that I needed help too. Then I opened my wallet and gave him enough money to get a meal and some shelter for a day.

Suddenly I understood that no matter how much money we have, we all need help. On the other hand, no matter how poor you are and how many material problems you have, you still might offer your help to others and you still might be giving. Even it’s just a nice word, you can give that and it can be priceless to other persons.

Maybe that man was just a homeless stranger, but to me he was more than that. Maybe he was sent by the Highest Loving Power personally to me to open my eyes and to show me that there is one thing, among all other values, which is very important and irreplaceable for each and every person. Actually, it is a true gift and it is called Giving.

C. who is willing to help othersD. who is sent by the Highest Loving Power

2.Why did the writer give enough money to the man?

A. The writer had enough money to help.

B. He needed money to eat and have a rest.

C. His words gave the writer deep thoughts.

D. The writer is kind and always helps others.

3.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A. Not everyone needs help.B. Giving is as important as receiving.

C. The rich should help the poor.D. A helping and touching word can help others.

4.What did the writer probably get from the man?

A. True meaning of giving.B. True meaning of being rich.

C. True meaning of values.D. True meaning of gifts.

Wolves are important animals in the traditions and stories of most Native American tribes. To Native Americans, wolves often represent bravery. The animals also are signs of strength, loyalty, and success at hunting. Other cultures--such as the ancient Celtic and Nordic peoples-also placed high value on wolves.

However, from the wolves in horror films to the wolves in children’s stories, wolves get a bum rap(不公正的惩罚) in both literature and English expressions.

To begin with, there is the term lone wolf. The lone wolf isn’t a bad person. But they like to do things on their own. However, the term can mean something less than desirable. Lone wolf makes you think the person doesn’t want to be around people because he or she dislikes them.

Now, let’s move on to the home.

Parents might criticize their children for wolfing down their food. In other words, the child eats very quickly and without care. And if someone says a child was raised by wolves, that child has bad manners and is behaving like a wild animal. A wolf at the door means someone to whom you owe money is waiting just outside your door.

By the way, there are two popular wolf-related expressions that come from Aesop, the ancient Greek storyteller.

The first is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A wolf in sheep’s clothing describes someone who acts and looks nice on the outside but is bad on the inside.

Aesop’s other wolf fable also involves a shepherd, but not a hardworking one. He is known as the boy who cried wolf. People who cry wolf are not trusted. People are so familiar with this story, you simply have to say cry wolf for them to know what you mean.

1.According to the passage, which group of people may think wolves are bad animals?

A. The ancient Nordic people??? B. The ancient Celtic people

C. Native Americans??? D. The English people

2.Which of the following can describe a person who often acts alone?

A. A wild wolf??? B. A lone wolf

C. A wolf at the door??? D. A wolf in sheep’s clothing

3.What may you probably mean by saying someone cries wolf?

A. The person is selfish??? B. The person is a liar

C. The person is stubborn??? D. The person is a troublemaker

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Stories about wolves

B. The research on wolves

C. Expressions about wolves

D. The cultural differences about wolves

??? Tokyo is one of those places that you can love and hate at the same time.

In Tokyo there are always too many people in the places where I want to be. Of course there are too many cars. The Japanese drive very fast, but in Tokyo they often spend a long time in traffic jams. Tokyo is not different from London,Paris and New York in that. It is different when one wants to walk.

At certain times of the day there are a lot of people on foot in London’s Oxford Street. But the streets near the Ginze in Tokyo always have a lot of people on foot, and sometimes it is really difficult to walk. People are very polite; there are just too many of them.

The worst time to be in the street is at 11:30 at night. That is when the nightclubs are closing and everybody wants to go home. There are 35,000 nightclubs in Tokyo, and you do not often see one that is empty.

During the day, most people travel to and from work by train. Tokyo people buy six million train tickets every day. At most stations, trains arrive every two or three minutes, but at certain hours there do not seem to be enough trains. Although they are usually crowded, Japanese trains are very good. They always leave and arrive on time. On a London train you would see everybody reading a newspaper. In Tokyo trains everybody in a seat seems to be asleep, whether his journey is long or short.

In Tokyo, I stood outside the station for five minutes. Three fire-engines raced past on the way to one of the many fires that Tokyo has every day. Tokyo has so many surprises that none of them can really surprise me now.

1.Tokyo is different from London in that ________.

A. there are many traffic jams

B. nightclubs are sometimes empty

C. wherever I want to be, it’s too crowded

D. it is more difficult to go somewhere on foot

2.According to the passage, Japanese trains_________.

A. are always punctual

B. often delay at most situations

C. are crowded because they are often late

D. are the last means people use to travel to and from work

3.What is the story mainly about?

A. The writer’s impression of Tokyo.

B. The reasons why the writer loves Tokyo.

C. Different means of transportation in Tokyo.

D. Many surprises that Tokyo has brought to the writer.

4.Fires break out _______ in Tokyo according to the writer.

A. very seldomB. quite frequently

C. three times a dayD. the most often in the world

如don‘t, can’t, won‘t应写为do not, cannot, will not等。 如not… any应写为no, not… much 写为 little, not many 写做few等。 例如:He did not say any words。 He said no words。 There are not many chances available。 There are few chances available。 , “and so on”等表达方式。 例如:Activities include dancing, singing, etc。 Activities include dancing, singing, and other fun stuff。 Consequently we may arrive at the conclusion that… We may consequently arrive at the conclusion that…

Thepie chartprovides some interesting data regardingthe family expense of urban residents during Spring Festival in ourcountry. As is shown above, the family expense during the holiday is mainly used for gifts, accounting 40 percent of the whole expense.

Obviously, such statistics regarding family expenses reflects the lifestyles of the average urban family in China. To begin with, the most expense used for buyingpresentssuggests that Chinese people are morelikelyto enjoy a lifestyle of communication during holidays, which may add more flavor to their routine life. What’s more,it isinterestingto note that urban residents attach importance to giving others gifts, therebydevoting much of the income togifts for friends, relativesand familymembers. Inaddition, there is no denying in saying that the major factor responsible for the phenomenon is that urban people posses more moneyavailablefor gifts thanks to the growth of urban economy.

Takingabove-mentionedanalysisinto account, we can naturallyarrive atthe conclusion:as the societyfurtherdevelops, the trendmirroredby the table is bound to continue for a couple of years in the forthcomingfuture.

When people go to the hospital to have a medical examination, sometimes doctors will ask them to have an X-ray or CT. What about a PET PET stands for Positron Emission.

Tomography(正电子成像素). PET scanner(s 扫描仪)create 3-D images of what is happening in the body. Scientists are devloping this medical equipment that could tell them more about the human body, and help them develop more-effective treatments for cancer, heart disease and brain disorders. It would be the world’s first full-body PET scanner.

Researchers are calling the large scanner that they are developing Explorer. It will give medical workers images of what is happening in the whole human body that have never been seen before. PET scanners now give doctors images of only parts of the body.

The U.S National Institutes of Health gave a research team at the University of California at Davis $ 15.5 million to build the scanner.

Ramsey Badawi, a professor at UC Davis, says the scanner will give researchers new information about how human organs (器官)work together.

“We’re a system of organs and all the organs interact with each other. And we’ve never really been able to get that with imaging before, and now we’re going to be able to look at that. These images help us find out and follow diseases. The new scanner will help us do that even better.”

Simon Cherry, another professor at UC Davis, says the PET scans can show the progress of both disease and medical treatments. “With PET scans we’re looking at function. We’re actually able to say something about what the cells in the body are doing. He says the Explorer uses a much lower amount of radiation(辐射)than today’s PET tests, and creates images more quickly. “So we can do scans in maybe 30 seconds that now take 20 minutes. Or we do scans under a very small radiation.”

A complete view could help researchers develop new medicines that target diseases and parts of the body. It could help doctors reduce harmful side effects by following the movement of medicines through the body.

The researchers hope to test the Explorer with humans in three years.

1.What is the most obvious advantage of Explorer about the image it produces

A. It will give doctors images of human organs.

B. It can offer doctors images of the whole human body.

C. It will give doctors images of only parts of the body.

D. It will give doctors images of better quality.

2.What does the word “It” mean in the last but one paragraph

A. The bodyB. A new medicine

C. A complete viewD. A disease

3.What’s the author’s attitude toward Explorer

A. DoubtfulB. Positive

C. SupportiveD. Objective

4.What’s the main idea of the passage

A. PET scanners create 3-D images.

B. Doctors will develop more effective treatments for cancer.

C. The world’s first PET scanner will be put into use.

D. A full-body PET scanner is being developed.

How to Build the Skill of Understanding People

It’s not always easy to predict or understand how someone else feels. Some people are better at it than others, but just about everyone can improve with practice.1..

It starts with watching.

Try these ways to develop your observation skills.

2. Next time you’re at the cafe, or on the bus, try this: Look around and try to identify how people might be feeling based on their body language, facial expressions, and what they’re doing. The girl with the textbooks on her knee might have an exam coming up.Does she seem confident or stressed

Read books or watch movies that have realistic descriptions of human emotions. 3. Try to understand why the characters feel the way they do. Based on those emotions, predict what a character will do next. Or see if you can explain why a charater did what he or she did.

It improves with listening.

Most of us rate ourselves as good listeners after all, listening seems like such a simple, basic thing to do. But often we’re so busy thinking of what we want to say that we don’t listen as much as we’d like.

Practice listening well in everyday conversations.4. Train yourself to think of listening as more important than talking.

Tune in to feelings as well as story. When a friend tells you about something, try to imagine how he or she might have felt. Make statements that show you’re trying to understand your friend’s experience, like: “Oh, that must have felt amazing!” or “That must be upsetting for you.”5.

A. Observe what people around you like.

B. Observe the behavior of people around you.

C. Here are some tips for you to share the skill.

D. Pay attention to how different characters feel and act.

E. Really pay attention to what the other person is saying.

F. Understanding others is all about watching and listening.

G. You might find you can predict what your friend will say next.

I am a mother of three and have recently completed my college degree.

The last class I had to take was Sociology(社会学). The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human had been graced with. Her last project of the term was called “Smile.” The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions.

I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so, I thought this would be a piece of cake. Soon after we were given the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald’s one cold March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did.

I did not move a bit… a strong feeling of fear welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved. As I turned around I smelled a terrible “dirty body” smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was “smiling”. His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of hope as he searched for acceptance.

He said, “Good day” as he counted the few coins he had been holding. The second man was obviously mentally disabled. I held my tears as I stood there with them.

The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all, Miss,” because that was all they could afford (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm.)

Then I really felt it the desire was so great I almost reached out and hugged the little man with the blue eyes.

抓住情致,②_______________。

During my third year of university, I spent six months studying in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many are worried about travelling to Rio but I promise, it is worth a visit. Now I want to share my top recommendations (推荐) for experiencing Rio less as a tourist but more like a native Brazilian.

Pedra Bonita

Rio is full of hiking routes, and some Brazilians love to spend an afternoon hiking. My favorite route of all has to be Pedra Bonita. Pedra Bonita involves a steep climb of about an hour through tall trees, and I admit it is difficult in Rio’s heat, but you are rewarded at the top with a wonderful view of the city, standing high above the green landscape and blue sea below.

Mureta da Urca

One thing you are sure to find in Rio is an amazing sunset, but a lot of the best spots tend to be full of tourists. In my opinion, Mureta da Urca is the most relaxing place to watch the sun set over the silver sea, with the figure of Christ the Redeemer standing tall in the background.

Pedra do Sal

Pedra do Sal is a historical area in the city centre and on Monday nights it is brought to life by the sound of samba. Hundreds of people gather in the street, food and drink stalls are set up and it becomes a giant street party with everyone enjoying the happy sound of live samba!

Picanha

If there were one Brazilian food I could bring back to the UK, it would be picanha. It is the tastiest cut of steak I have ever tasted, served alongside rice and beans.

1.The writer once went to Rio de Janeiro to ________.

A. stay there as a tourist for six months

B. study as a short-time international student

C. live as a native Brazilian

D. learn how to be a native Brazilian

2.Which of the following is probably the favorite of body-builders

A. Pedra Bonita. B. Mureta da Urca.

C. Pedra do Sal. D. Picanha.

A. A wonderful view of the city. B. An amazing sunset.

C. A giant street party. D. A nice Brazilian food.

These days, people who do manual (体力的) work often receive far more money than people who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently referred to as “white-collar workers” for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work. Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the honor of becoming white-collar workers. This can lead to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation.

When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning, he left home dressed in a smart black suit. He then changed into overalls (工作服) and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret. Alf’s wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found another job. He will soon be working in an office. He will be earning only half as much as he used to, but he feels that his rise in status (身份;地位) is well worth the loss of money. From now on, he will wear a suit all day and others will call him ‘Mr. Bloggs’, not ‘Alf’.

1.What does the case of Alfred Bloggs show

A. That people often care more about the status of a job than the income.

B. That “white-collar workers” usually wear a suit to go to work.

C. That manual workers prefer to keep their jobs a secret.

D. That office workers earn less than manual workers.

2.What did Alfred Bloggs do for over two years

A. He told his wife he worked for the Corporation, when in fact he did not.

B. He dressed himself as a dustman before leaving home every morning.

C. He lied to his wife about his job.

D. He earned twice as much as a white-collar worker.

3.What does Alfred Bloggs think of his new job

A. He feels it is a pity because he now earns less than before.

B. He thinks it is worthwhile for his rise in status.

C. He is proud because he earns much more than before.

D. He is satisfied because he no longer needs a shower before returning home.

4.What’s the best title of the passage

A. The Double Life of Alfred Bloggs.

B. Money or Status, Which Comes First

C. The Story of Alfred Bloggs, a Dustman.

D. Truth Will Come to Light Sooner or Later.

Inspired by a 9-year-old cyclist, Lauren Turner, who can only use one hand, a group of University of Guelph students has won an international award for their invention ― a bike brake lever (刹车手柄) that pulls both the front brake and the back brake at the same time.

Lauren Tuner was able to ride her bike, but not as confidently and quickly as her friends.

“She couldn’t use the front brake. She only used the back brake, but the front brake makes you stop twice as fast,” says Micha Wallace, who, with Katie Bell, Anina Sakaguchi and Andrew Morries won second prize in the James Dyson Award for their single-handed bike brake lever.

“Lauren Turner tried the device (装置) first and she used it all last summer. She had no problems. It helped her go faster because she felt more confident in her braking abilities. She felt safer.” says Wallace.

The invention was the fourth-year design project for the four students. They designed, tested and created a prototype (模型) within a four-month period.

When Wallace heard about the James Dyson Award on the news, she and her co-inventors entered their project in the U. K. -based contest, which rewards students designers who create products that improve the way we live. The students collected the runner-up prize ― £2,000 for them and £500 for their school.

As well, they had a chance to meet James Dyson, a U.K. famous inventor. Praising the students for their invention, Dyson says the single-handed brake lever could improve safety for all cyclists. By using both brakes at once, you could prevent the possibility of flying over the handlebars and ending up with an injury.

The students hope to sell it to a major company. It may be used in other devices that require two hands for operation.

1.According to the passage, the James Dyson Award was named after ________.

Adopting (领养) a new pet should be an exciting and rewarding experience. But just as all families are different, so are all pets. Learn what to consider before you find your new furry family member.

All pets require their owner’s time, so Theisen, an expert in pet care, says how much time you can give to the pet is the top thing to consider. “If you adopt a 4-year-old cat, she’s not going to need the same amount of care as a 9-week-old dog”. says Theisen.

Like dating and finding the perfect partner, you want a pet that shares your interests and activity levels, particularly if you’re looking for dogs. “Consider activity levels in the family,” says Theisen. “If you’re a couch potato, or in other words, a homebody, look for a pet that matches that activity level.”

Some dogs, like Dalmatians and Terriers, can be loud and noisy and demand a more active lifestyle and room to be outside; they might not fit as well in close living situations as more sedentary pets. The Humane Society of the United States encourages potential owners to research books and websites and talk to other pet owners when considering adopting a new pet.

Theisen says that potential owners should go beyond the first impression of loveliness and watch how the animals interact with them. “There are dogs that will jump to the gate to meet you,” says Theisen. “And there are dogs that sit there with their sad doggy eyes ― you know they’re not going to be high-energy dogs”.

Some exotic pets, like tortoises and parrots, are likely to live longer than dogs and cats ― and even their human owners. They can also grow to be much larger than they were when they first came to live with their owners. Owners should make sure that their living situations should be continually updated and also prepare for the animal’s future.

1.What will people have to consider first of all when they plan to adopt a pet

A. The amount of time they can give to the pet.

B. The money that the pet will cost them.

C. Whether the pet is lovely or not.

D. Whether the pet is active or not.

2.The underlined word “sedentary” in the fourth paragraph probably means ________.

A. weak. B. noisy.

C. loud. D. inactive.

3.Being a couch potato and not fond of exotic pets, which should Julia choose

When I asked her if she had told Lisa the story, she shook her head and said, “I don’t think girl today should listen to this story.” I was confusing. Later, she explained why. In the story, Snow White does nothing to rescue herself. Instead, she depends others’ help. My sister doesn’t want her daughter to be a person which likes turning to others for help. One day, a young man was cleaning out his late grandfather’s belongings when he came across a bright red envelope. Written on the front were the words, “To my grandson.” Recognizing his grandfather’s handwriting, the young man opened the envelope. A letter inside read:

Dear Ronny,

Years ago you came to me for help. You said, “Grandpa, how is it that you’ve accomplished so much in your life? You’re still full of energy, and I’m already tired of struggling. How can I get that same enthusiasm that you’ve got?”

I didn’t know what to say to you then. But knowing my days are numbered, I figure that I owe you an answer. So here is what I believe.

I think a lot of it has to do with how a person looks at things. I call it “keeping your eyes wide open”.

When you meet up with challenges, welcome them. They’ll leave you wiser, stronger, and more capable than you were the day before. When you make a mistake, be grateful for the things it taught you. Resolve to use that lesson to help you reach your goals.

And always follow the rules, even the little ones. When you follow the rules, life works. If you think you ever really get by with breaking the rules, you’re only fooling yourself.

It’s also important to decide exactly what you want. Then keep your mind focused on it, and be prepared to receive it.

But be ready to end up in some new places, too. As you grow with the years, you’ll be given bigger shoes to fill. So be ready for endings as well as challenging beginnings.

Sometimes we have to be brave enough to move from the familiar to the unfamiliar. Life isn’t just reaching peaks. Part of it is moving from one peak to the next. If you rest too long in between, you might be tempted to quit. Leave the past in the past. Climb the next mountain and enjoy the view.

Remember that your choices will create your successes and your failures. So consider all the pathways ahead, and decide which ones to follow. Then believe in yourself, get up, and get going.

And be sure to take breaks once in a while. They’ll give you a renewed commitment to your dreams and a cheerful, healthy perception of the things that matter the most of you.

Most important of all, never give up on yourself. The person that ends up a winner is the one who resolves to win. Give life everything you’ve got, and life will give its best back to you.

Love always,

Grandpa

Pupils remember more and behave better when 3D images are used in lessons, research suggests. They are quicker to learn and absorb new concepts, and display higher levels of concentration.

Professor Anne Bamford studied the effectiveness of 3D content in 15 schools across seven countries. In each school, one class studied science in 2D classes and another did the same lesson using 3D resources. Pupils in 3D classes could remember more than those in 2D classes after four weeks, improving test scores by an average of 17 percent compared with 8 percent for 2D lessons.

The researchers commented that the pupils in the 3D groups had deeper understanding, increased attention span, more motivation and higher engrossment in the lessons.

One teacher in the study said, “ In class with 3D you have the ‘wow’ effect. The pupils are too interested to be disruptive(制造混乱的). They get involved and forget to be naughty.” Another said, “The class certainly pay more attention to the learning in the 3D classes. They are more focused. That is important in this class --- eight out of the 26 pupils in this class have attention problems, so I am thrilled with the impact of 3D. They are really attentive.” The study also found that teachers could use the 3D animations without specific training. Schools would need 3D-enabled projectors(放映机), laptops with good graphic capabilities, 3D software and glasses for children to introduce animations into classrooms.

But Danny Nicholson, from the Association of Science Education, said the technology would be impractical to use in schools and could be too expensive. He said, “While I think the idea of 3D technology is very interesting --- and I’m speaking as a fan of interactive whiteboards and projectors as a technology in the classroom --- I worry that 3D is a bit of an expensive gimmick (小玩意儿). There are a few cases where a true 3D image might help, but a lot of the time, good 2D models that can be moved, would be just as effective.”

In Colorado, the US, one school district is already in the process of having 1,000 3D projectors installed in classrooms. And the University of California, which carries out scientific research into the Lake Tahoe Basin, has used 3D presentations with Grade Six pupils. Those who watched the 3D presentations were more engaged and reported a general increase in their interest in science compared with students who watched the 2D version.

49. What method did Professor Bamford use to prove the advantages of 3D lessons?

A. Argument. B. Description. C. Comparison. D. Narration.

50. What does the underlined word “engrossment” in the third paragraph probably mean?

A. Encouragement. B. Concentration. C. Contribution. D. Consequence.

51. Teachers think pupils in 3D classes ____________.

A. find it hard to concentrate on the lesson

B. are too naughty to get involved in 2D classes.

C. have less motivation and lower engagement in the lesson

D. have deeper understanding and increased attention span

52. Which of the following statement is TRUE?

A. 3D presentations have been used with Grade Six pupils throughout the US.

B. 3D technology would replace 2D models in the future.

C. Teachers would use the 3D technology by training.

D. Many pupils are now more interested in science than before.

53. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?

A. 2D will be replaced by 3D because it is neither interesting nor effective.

B. Danny Nicholson tends to think that 3D is only a bit of gimmick.

C. 3D would be impractical to use in schools because of finance problem.

D. Danny Nicholson doesn’t like to use whiteboards and projectors in the classroom.

54. What is the article mainly about?

A. How schools can make full use of 3D technology.

B. Pupils behave better when 3D images are used in classes.

C. 2D models are always more effective than 3D images.

D. The differences between 3D and 2D images.

Scrooge looked around him angrily. It was Christmas and his only friend Jacob Marley, had been dead for seven years. What was there for him to celebrate? He listened with growing anger to the people calling out greetings in the street and growled at his nephew Bob Cratchit, who was just ready to go home. “Merry Christmas, uncle,” called Bob as he hurried out of the door.

Scrooge sighed. He might just as well go to bed. Aware that he should not waste his candle, he quickly undressed and climbed into bed. But no sooner had he done so than the ghost of Marley, covered in chains, appeared. “What’s the matter, Jacob?” he asked. “There are the chains I made in my life,” answered the ghost. “I’m forced to wander around with no rest and no peace. I have come here to warn you that if you do not change, this too will be your fate. You will be visited by three spirits. Expect the first one tomorrow when the clock strikes one. Expect the second and the third on the following nights at the same hour.” With that Marley vanished. “Nonsense!” he said and going back to bed, fell fast asleep.

When Scrooge awoke it was dark. The clock struck one. At the sound, light flashed into the room and there stood a young boy. “Who are you?” asked Scrooge in an unsteady voice. “I’m the spirit of Christmas past,” replied the spirit. “Come with me.” “Do you remember this?” he asked. Scrooge did. He heard the happy cries of people, and looking around he found himself, as he used to be, sitting on a chair and reading. It was a Christmas. Suddenly Scrooge watched his younger self joined in a band, dancing and laughing. “Strange,” said the spirit, “that such little things should make people so happy.” The ghost let him go and Scrooge sank down into a deep sleep.

When he awoke again the second night, the clock sounded one again. Before he doubted the second spirit already turned up. The fat and jolly spirit was smiling,“I’m the spirit of Christmas present.”Again Scrooge grasped the spirit’s hand and was transported to a small house filled with a number of children and their mother. “Why, it’s my nephew Bob’s house,” cried Scrooge in astonishment. His surprise increased when the door opened and in came Bob carrying a small, sick boy, Tiny Tim. “Sit down,” cried Bob to his family. “Let’s have the best Christmas dinner!” They all began to eat eagerly. Scrooge watched at the happiness and contentment of his poor nephew’s family. “A Merry Christmas to us all!” cried Bob. “God bless us everyone!” added Tiny Tim, who sat very close to his father and Bob held his thin hand tightly. “No, not for the uncle, but for you and the children. Nobody knows better than you how mean that man is.” exclaimed Bob’s wife. “Spirit,” cried Scrooge. “Will Tiny Tim live?” “If the future remains the same,” said the spirit, “there will be an empty chair next year.” Again the spirit moved Scrooge away, and he fell asleep as he fell back into his bed.

The third night he woke and waited for the hour and the third spirit. This time the spirit didn’t come in a flash of light but arrived quietly wearing a black cloth that covered its face and form. “I’m the spirit of Christmas that is to come.” The spirit pointed and led him to a large stone. It was at the foot of a grave(坟墓) that was clearly neglected. Scrooge looked closer with trembling fingers and with horror read his own name on the stone. “Oh, spirit, no, no!” The spirit’s finger remained steady pointing at the grave. “I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year,” cried Scrooge in terror. He reached out to hold the spirit’s hand, but it slipped away. Scrooge looked around him. he saw he was in his own bed with his own thing around him.

“I have learned from the past, present and the future,” he rushed to the window and shouted to the boys below: “What day is it today?” “Why, it’s Christmas Day,” they replied in amazement. “Wonderful,” cried Scrooge. He rushed to his office to wait for Bob. When he entered, Scrooge pretended to look angry. “Do you know what day it is, my boy?” he asked Bob. “I’m not going to stand for this any longer,” he continued, “and so I’m going to raise your salary.” Bob looked amazed. “A Merry Christmas, Bob,” cried Scrooge slapping him on the back. “I want to help you and your family. Let’s talk about it this very afternoon.”

Reasons for Learning a Foreign Language

In the United Stated, many high schools require at least two years of foreign language study for graduation. Actually, becoming fairly fluent in a foreign language provides many more benefits. As our world becomes increasingly international, the importance of learning a second (or third) language will only continue to grow.

61.________________________________ Learning a second language will have a powerful effect on your success in business. The ability to transform freely in multiple languages is so important, in fact, that many companies actually offer financial benefits to employees who can achieve fluency. If you are working with the general US population, you will probably see the greatest professional gain by learning Spanish, but almost every language is spoken somewhere in the melting pot. Whether you are a doctor learning to communicate directly with more of your patients or a customer service representative learning to solve more customers’ problems, expanding your language abilities will help your work greatly.

62._________________________________ Because learning a second language requires such a basic change in ideas, it will provide many intellectual(智力的) benefits as well. Much like studying a musical instrument, learning a foreign language will provide a mental challenge that will increase your intellectual strength in both school and business. This effect is so strong that researchers have found each year of language study results in measurable gains on both college and graduate school exams.

63. _________________________________ Because we are used to speaking, reading, and even thinking in our native language since birth, we can’t often pay attention to various grammatical errors. When you learn a second language, your study of the foreign language will force you to draw comparisons and reevaluate your understanding of English grammar. Not only will you learn a second language, but you will actually learn to communicate more clearly in your first language!

64. _________________________________ Traveling either on your own or in a study abroad program provides many opportunities to study a foreign culture and learn to think outside of your own culture’s assumptions. As an English speaker in a foreign country, however, your ability to actually experience the country’s real culture will be fairly limited. By learning a foreign language before traveling, however, you will actually be able to get past the tourist experience to see what the country is really like on the inside. As an added bonus(意外的好处),you can also perfect your language skills during your stays.

65. _________________________________ Not only will language learning benefit you in the long term, but it can also help you pay for college. Many scholarships are available for students who speak a certain language or understand a particular culture. Because these scholarships are offered to a limited group, you will actually have a much higher chance of winning these scholarships than you would in some of the more well-known programs.

How are you? Today I’ve got a wonderful news to tell you. I have offered a scholarship at a university in Australia for my further education. One hundred and twenty students take exams for it, but only a few was chosen and I was one of them. Therefore, my parents are not happy about it. They are strong against me. They say it is too far away that they will not see me for a whole year and they are afraid that I will feel lonely. They can’t imagine a girl so young living alone. They advise me to studying in the capital instead. Then I’ll be able to continue living with him. How can I persuade them to accept the fact what I have grown up?

Best wishes,

作文

Dear Editor,

As the college entrance examination is drawing near, we senior three students are occupied with busy work. In a way, the P.E.class is the only chance to relax and enjoy ourselves at school. However, it is a pity that our present P.E.class is quite dull and sometimes even replaced by other subjects.

As is known to all, the P.E.class can not only build up our body but also shape our personality. It serves to develop our awareness of cooperation and spirit of competition. Therefore, it will be great loss to us students if it is replaced by other lessons. Meanwhile, I suggest the teachers should design and organize varieties of fun sports besides dull field and track practice or ball games, where everyone can be involved and have fun as well. After all, not everybody thinks running and ball games appealing.

I do hope the P.E.class can enrich our school life and enable everyone to find his or her own pleasure in it.

Yours,

Li Yue

3、4月是熟悉英语阶段,主要就是复习高中和大学的英语课本,每天利用工作之余,尽可能多地看英语书籍;

在一天的安排上,我上午看数学,下午看英语,晚上做数学题,最后背词汇;
