Passage 1

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:?

People do not analyze every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a solution from the last time they had a similar problem. They often accept the opinions or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without thinking; they try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all these methods fail, the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six stages in analyzing a problem.?

First the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam’s bicycle is broken, and he cannot ride it to class as he usually does. Sam must see that there is a problem with his bicycle.?

Next the thinker must define the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must find the reason why it does not work. For instance, he must determine if the problem is with the gears, the brakes, or the frame. He must make his problem more specific.?

Now the person must look for information that will make the problem clearer and lead to possible solutions. For instance, suppose Sam de

Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension  (35 minutes)

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.?

Passage 1

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:?

In a sense, the new protectionism is not protectionism at all, at least not in the traditional sense of the term. The old protectionism referred only to trade restricting and trade expanding devices, such as the tariff or export subsidy. The new protectionism is much broader than this: it includes interventions into fo

reign trade but is not limited to them. The new protectionism, in fact, refers to how the whole of government intervention into the private economy affects international trade. The emphasis on trade is still there, thus came the term “protection.” But what is new is the realization that virtually all government activities can affect international economic relations.?

The emergence of the new protectionism in the Western world reflects the victory of the interventionist, or welfare economy over the market economy. Jab Tumiler writes,“The old protectionism…coexisted, without any apparent intellectual difficulty with the acceptance of the market as a national as well as an international economic distribution mechanism ― indeed, protectionists as well as (if not more than) free traders stood for laissez faire(放任政策). Now, as in the 1930s, protectionism is an expression of a profound skepticism as to the ability of the market to distribute resources and incomes to societies sat

Passage one

11. 答案 A。?

【详细解答】此句…protectionists as well as (if not more than) free traders stood for laissez faire指“… 前文已说明自由贸易主义者是支持由自由市场分配资源的,从as well as 和if not more than可以判断stood for表示“支持”,选项中A项表示“象征”,C项指“容忍”,D项指“不赞成”,因此B项“支持”正确。?

13.答案 A。?

Social security, unemployment insurance, minimum wage laws, and rent control are by now traditional welfare state elements on the American scene.

The victory of the welfare state is almost complete in northern Europe. In Great Britain this is only somewhat less true.“在英国,福利国家政策有点不完全”可判断D项正确。?

15. 答案D。?

Therefore, the government intervenes to bring about a more desired result.“政府干预经济生活能带来更好的结果”。 ?

Passage two

Passage one

的they try to find a solution by trial and error.“用边失败边尝试的办法寻找解决方案”,这个阶段是在开始分析问题之前。?

22. 答案 C。?

People do not analyze every problem they meet.“人们不会对遇见的每个问题都进行分析”,如果

【详细解答】正如考古学家们说的:the campsite,… was the oldest documented evidence for human presence at this high latitude.

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage 1

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.?

The three main types of secondary education in the United States have been provided by the Latin grammar school, the academy, and the public high school. The first of these was a colonial institution. It began in New England with the establish ment in 1635 of the Boston Free Latin School. The curriculum(课程) consisted mainly of the classical languages, and the purpose of this kind of school was the preparation of boys for college, where most of them would be fitted for the ministry.?

The academy began in the early 1750’s with Benjamin Franklin’s school in Philadelphia, which later became the University of Pennsylvania. It extended generally to  about the middle nineteeth century, except in the southern states where the public high school was late in developing and where the academy continued to be a principal means of secondary education even after 1900.The academy was open to girls as well as to boys, and it provided a wider curriculum than what the Latin grammar school had furnished. It was designed not only as a preparation for college  but also for practical life in commercial and business activities.Although its wide educational values are evident and are recognized as important contributions  to secondary education in this country, the academy has never been considered a  public institution as the public high school has come to be.?

Test Four

Running a fever was once thought to be the prerogative of warmblooded creatures, whose internal temperatures are indpendent of the weather. But, as Matthew Kluger reported in “The Importance of Being Feverish” (January 1976), lizards can also develop fevers, even though there is no question that they are coldblooded. They raise their temperatures by moving into the sun or, in the case of Kluger’s experiments, under a sun lamp. And it seems to do them some good. Sick lizards kept in cages at feverish temperatures fare much better than their counterparts in normal and cool environments.

?Now, fever has spread to invertebrates(无脊椎动物). Recent studies have shown that crayfish and scorpions can develop fevers. Crayfish injected with bacteria and scorpions injected with prostaglandins(前列腺素) swam and scuttled to hot areas. (Prostaglandins are hormones thought to be instrumental in the development of a fever.)

?Evidence is also mounting that moderate fevers have their benefits, which might explain why the fever process is so widespread. Leukocytes, white blood cells that are active in fighting bacterial infections, are more mobile at febrile temperatures. And fevers reduce the amount of iron available to bacteria. That reduction, combined with high temperatures, has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth.

1. Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage??

A. Coldblooded animals can develop fevers.?

B. There are benefits to developing fevers.?

C. Fevers inhibit bacterial growth.?

D. Lizards can develop fevers.?

2. Fevers cause ____.?

A. prostaglandins to be formed?

B. iron to be made available to bacteria?

C. leukocytes to be more mobile?

D. lizards to be coldblooded animals?

3. Which of the following statements is true??

A. Developing fever is the privilege of warm?blooded animals, so sick lizards can not run a fever.?

B.

Test Two

1

In the primary school, a child is in a comparatively simple setting and most of the time forms a relationship with one familiar teacher. On entering secondary school, a new world opens up and frequently it is a much more difficult world. The pupil soon learns to be less free in the way he speaks to teachers and even to his fellow pupils. He begins to lose gradually the free and easy ways of the primary school, for he senses the need for a more cautious approach in the secondary school where there are older pupils. Secondary staff and pupils suffer from the pressures of academic work and seem to have less time to stop and talk. Teachers with specialist roles may see hundreds of children in a week, and a pupil may be able to form relationships with very few of the staff. He has to decide which adults are approachable; good schools will make clear to every young person from the first year what guidance and personal help is availableDbut whether the reality of life in the institution actually encourages requests for help is another matter.?

Adults often forget what a confusing picture school can offer to a child. He sees a great deal of movement, a great number of peopleDoften rather frightening?ooking peopleDand realises that an increasing number of choices and decisions have to be made. As he progresses through the school the confusion may become less but the choices and decisions required will increase. The school will rightly expect the pupil to take the first steps to obtain the help he needs, for this is the pattern of adult life for which he has to be prepared, but all the time the opportunities for personal and group advice must be presented in a way which makes them easy to understand and within easy reach of pupils.

1.According to the passage one of the problems for pupils entering secondary schools is that ____.?

A.they are taught by many different teachers?

B.they do not attend lessons in every subject
