Topic Sentence

Supporting Ideas

Examples

For example,First, secondly, last but not the least来讲分论点,但这样给考官的感觉是在背作文,而不是真正的口语。 最好用well, also , actually ,as a matter of fact , you know 等等词。

雅思口语范文:a picture or a photograph you like in your room

For the favorite picture I have in my room is the one with my boy friend and I smiling in front of the Disneyland Park. It is put right on the wall facing my bed so every time I lie down I can remember those moments.

The memories still come to me that the photo was taken on a rainy night when everything seemed dim in the distance and noises were replaced by the profound serenity of raindrops.

We had a great time at the Carousel with many other couples taking photos of each other. And minute upon minute, note upon note, the little horses would go up and down.

When the music faded out and the fantastic tour came to its end, the dark night sky was kindled by fireworks rising behind the Disney castle where all fairy tales dwelled in. Those dancing images of mascots were projected on the castle, reviving the happy moments although the fact that the park was closing soon made us a little sad.

But at least we still have the photo. It is always reminiscent of that lovely time at the park and I believe there are more happy moments to be filmed with us together.

1. Dim: (light) not bright

Ie: This light is too dim to read by

2. serenity:the quality of being calm and peaceful

Ie: The hotel offers a haven of peace and serenity away from the bustle of the city

3. Fade out: to become less clear or quieter

Ie: Fade out the music at the end fo the scene

4. Reminiscent: remind you of somebody/something

Ie: The way he laughed was strongly reminiscent of his father.

1. What’s the advantages and disadvantages of taking photos with smartphones?

Well, the first benefit of taking photos with smartphones would be easy transmission. It’s very handy to share a picture with friends as long as there is internet available. It could be even easier if two mobiles are both iPhones, thanks to the airdrop.

Also, compare to the digital cameras which are usually quite bulky, smartphones on the other hand are very portable. And all the functions work automatically which means even if you don’t know anything about photography, there is still good chances to craft nice phones.

Talking about the disadvantages, the only thing I can think of would be that people may not treasure pictures as memories that much as before.

A snap shot serves to crystallize the important moment in your life and that moment lasts for the length of a breath. People are unprepared to be filmed and their emotions are open to interpretation afterwards.

But using smartphones, people tend to take several at the same time with the same pose, and to filter out the best one. I think it lose the real meaning of recording the true life to some extent.

2. What is the benefit of learning painting for children?

First of all, painting is the easiest way for children to express their imagination. So learning to do that would definitely strengthen their ability to think outside of the box which is significant for their later lives.

because imagination is the basis for creation and innovation, one can’t achieve more in any aspects without it. Apart from that, learning painting could be the best way to teach kids to appreciate beauty and therefore to treasure life.

Reading and children

Reading and children

What kinds of book are most popular with children in your country? Why do you think that is?

I think the most popular kind of books with children in China is comics. Statistics and my person experience with children bring me to this conclusion. First of all, if you bother to check the top sellers in terms of books, you will find comics for children permanent residents in those lists. As a comparison, those books telling fairytales and legends seem a little weak in terms of effect on children. Also, whenever I find some children gazing at their smart phone or tablets or reading a paper back book, they are mostly reading comics. It has become a great challenge to find kids focusing on words instead of pictures. Based on these two evidences, I believe comics are most children’s favorite in China.

Why do you think some children do not read books very often?

Well, for this issue, I think the shift of lifestyle is first and foremost to blame. In the online era, we, no matter adults or children have tens of alternatives to do in our spare time and reading a book is one of the most attention-intense among them. Why not go surf the Internet using your smart phone or tablet for some easy-to-understand stuff with beautiful pictures explaining everything to you, or some other rich media requiring no literacy. We grownups still struggle to escape from such grasp, needless to say the children.

How do you think children can be encouraged to read more?

Before we dive into the question, I think I need to make it clear that the children today have been reading far more than we expect. Read Weibo posts, WeChat messages, endless news feeds and many other kinds of media. They are avid readers that older people cannot match with. What grownups are trying to do in this scenario is to shift their focus of reading from those “light” material back to some old-school, serious and provoking thoughts created by real thinkers. Upon this problem I hold a pessimistic opinion. What we can hope for is nothing but luck which can bring a few on them to what grownups want them to read.

Reading for different purposes

Are there any occasions when reading at speed is a useful skill to have? What are they?

Yes indeed. Based on my own experience as a university student, reading at speed can save me from piles of papers to finish before a near deadline. Suppose a student needs to finish reading three or even more papers of more than one hundred pages and write a report about the issue discussed in them, and even worse, the deadline is two days from now. In this case, reading at speed is quite comforting. Another occasion where reading at speed is extremely helpful is to do a presentation about an unfamiliar topic in a short time. If the presenter can read fast enough and memorize what he or she has read about, the presentation can be fully equipped with knowledge though it may be not logically organized in some ways, but at least the audience can have something to digest. This looks very much like a cheat but turns out to be useful.

Are there any jobs where people need to read a lot? What are they?

Yes, definitely. For instance, journalist, novelist or any other kinds of jobs involving writing requires a great amount of reading. These jobs are basically about output, which means to take in information and process it into different forms for more people’s better understanding of the issue. In this situation, reading as a crucial source of gathering information is indispensable. Without adequate input, the output will be dry in all ways so that the jobs calling for detailed information will be total failures.

Do you think that reading novels is more interesting than reading factual books? Why is that?

Yes I do. As an avid reader of novels, I always have a preference for books with an intense plot to those with merely knowledge or information. Generally speaking, I believe all kinds of books are written to communicate certain knowledge to their readers but the knowledge are packed in different covers. Some are embedded in a story, which is what novels do with the knowledge, and some are delivered within a series of experiments and assumptions, which is how factual books are organized. The preference for novels is parallel to the fondness of junk food instead of the tasteless fibers and protein capsulated inside colorful pills. What matters to a person’s taste for books is heavily influenced by the way the information is communicated. That is how I look at the preference for novels to factual books.

I'd like to talk about a hotpot restaurant, called super hot, in my hometown. I like hotpot very much. My friend told me about the restaurant, so I went there with my sister.

The food there is very delicious. After eating there many times, I recommended it to my friends and most of them liked it too. I think the manager is very creative. Since the business is very good, sometimes customers have to wait for the tables. The manager make this waiting time more rewarding. When the costumers have to wait for more than five minutes, they can have three plates of vegetables for free. Sometimes we feel happy if we have to wait, which is very different from the experiences in other restaurants. If you eat there, you can enjoy your drinks for a low price and you get your refills for free. I think it is very economic.

It became a very famous restaurant in my city. Now a lot of chain restaurants opened in my hometown. I think the business of this restaurant will be even better. Maybe soon, we will be able to find it in hangzhou.

3. Describe a party centre you went recently.

4. Describe a restaurant you recently visited.

5. Talk about a place where you often meet your friends.

6. Describe a restaurant that you enjoyed going to.

Thank you very much for giving me the chance to talk about my favourite restaurant. The name of my favourite restaurant is (say the name of the restaurant you are going to talk about) and it’s situated at the centre of the city I am currently living in. Not only I like the spacious, serene environment, tasty menus that the restaurant serves, but I have lots of memories related to this restaurant. I remember that my parents celebrated some of my birthday parties there, our college friends arranged the get-together parties, one of my cousins’ marriage ceremony was celebrated there and similarly I attended lots of other parties at this very restaurant.

The restaurant has 3 floors and the sitting arrangement is quite nice. Paintings of famous artists have been hanging on the walls and the place is quite neat and clean. The interior decoration is charming and gorgeous feeling. The ground floor is spacious and can accommodate more than 50 cars' parking. The front view of the restaurant is different as the place gives the impression of an urban garden.

The restaurant offers several dishes including exotic deserts, ice-creams and also offers a separate place for the kids to play and have fun. The prices are reasonable and the foods are served quickly as opposed to some other restaurants where you will have to wait for a long for your foods to appear on your table. The waiters and other staffs are friendly and welcoming. The restaurant offers Chinese, Italian, Indian, Thai, Pakistani and local menus that gives you a wide ranges and options to pick from. The soft background music and instrumentals make the environment more enjoyable and soothing. The tables are not congested and people can chat over their personal topics without interruption. The long glass made windows offer the city view which makes the place worth visiting besides the delicious foods. The place must be a good place to be as I often found the foreign tourists visiting the restaurant. The authority lets the customers provide their feedbacks and comments on foods and the place and as I have noticed they take prompt action on a customer complaint.

In short, this is a really nice restaurant to go and enjoy the delicious meals.

Describe a special meal you were invited to.

You should say:

When and where you were invited

Who invited you

What you ate

And explain how you felt about the meal.

Ok then, well I’m actually quite lucky in the fact that I’ve been invited to quite a number of special meals, and the one I’ve decided to talk to you about was a farewell dinner of a good friend of mine, because he was about to go off to Canada for a few years to start university there, so he invited a few of his close friends for a farewell dinner before heading off.

And one of the reasons I’ve chosen to talk about this meal instead of some of the others I’ve been to is simply that it’s still quite fresh in my memory. You know, it was only about a couple of weeks ago when it happened. And as for where we had the meal, well I can’t remember the exact name of the place, but it was quite a posh restaurant somewhere in the centre of the city, and judging from how nice it looked when I walked in, it seemed to be a pretty expensive place to dine. So I was kind of relieved that it wouldn’t be me footing the bill! And we also had our own separate room, which was nice, and probably just as well, seeing as we made quite a bit of noise during the meal, what with all the laughing and stuff going on.

Anyway regarding what we ate, well I couldn’t tell you every single dish that we had, because there was just so much, you know, the whole table was literally covered with food. I mean, there was crab, chicken, duck, what else, um,……oh yeah, shrimps, and, uh…..oh and a whole load of different vegetables. So by the end of it, I was absolutely stuffed. You know, we all ate masses, because the food was so good, and it would have been a bit of a pity to see it go to waste!

But anyway, finally then, with regard to how I felt about the meal, well to put it simply, I really enjoyed it. Because as well as the food, which was fantastic, I really enjoyed everyone’s company. You know, it was great being together with so many good friends, many of which I hadn’t seen in quite a while.

So yeah, all in all, it was a really special evening, and I’m extremely grateful to have been invited, and also very grateful to my friend for his generosity, as the bill must have come to quite a lot, I’m sure!

Notes:

Ok then = Ok, (I’m ready to begin). You can also say, “Ok right then” or “Ok then”

I’m actually quite lucky in the fact that I’ve been invited to quite a number of special meals = 我其实很幸运因为我很多次被邀请参加特殊晚餐 (or something like that!)

it’s still quite fresh in my memory = I can remember it pretty clearly

it was just as well = 幸亏如此

quite a bit of = quite a lot of

foot the bill = pay the bill (买单)

by the end of it = 到最后

I was absolutely stuffed =

(you can use “absolutely” before extreme adjectives for emphasis, for example: “the show was absolutely amazing”! 演出太精彩了!/ I'm absolutely starving! 我饿死了!but you can't say “I'm absolutely hungry”, as “hungry” isn't a strong enough adjective.)

we all ate masses = 我们都吃了好多

So yeah = 所以嗯 (often used at the beginning of the final sentence when you are finishing your talk/answer)

Let's not waste any time and get started!

“I think”

1. As far as I’m concerned “据我所知;就我来看;我认为”

Eg:As far as I’m concerned, youth offenders should be punished by law. But .........

2.If I may say so “如果我能这么讲”“我认为”Eg:You look much younger than your actual age if I may say so.

3. If you ask me“我认为,如果你问我”Eg:Books are morebeneficial for children compared with computers if you ask me.

4. To my mind /In my opinion“在我心里,我认为”Eg.But an honest question posed from a broken heart is to my mind a good andrighteous thing.

此外还可以用以下短语表达:As I see it —— 就我所知;As far as I know——就我所知;I’m convinced that——我相信……比如:“Global warming is a recent problem as far as I know.”

你难道只能回答“I like/love swimming”吗。。。。。

1. This appeals to me because……这对我很有吸引力,因为……(这样回答既表明你的态度,又阐述了喜爱的原因)比如:“swimming appeals to me because it's such a great way to relieve stress .”

2. “I am keen on doing something“/ “ I am keen to do something”......我对某事充满了热情

比如:“I was keen on going to the party but two centimeters of snow fell in London and trains didn't run.”

同样地,如果你对某事并不热衷,使用“ I am not keen on doing something.”即可。

Asking for clarification

1. Sorry, I didn't quite catch that对不起, 我没听清楚

2. Could you say that again?

3. Could you explain what you mean by……?

比如:“could you explain what you mean by bricks and mortar business?”

Providing clarification

1. To put it another way换一种方式说

2. What I'm trying to say is我想说的是……

3. What I mean is我的意思是……

What I'm trying to say is that maybe you can't approach this as a purely intellectual exercise.”

1. It's quite a difficult question

2. That's a good question

3. I've never thought about it before but I guess……

1. I couldn't agree more——我非常赞同

2. I totally agree——

3. Absolutely/Definitely——绝对,肯定例如:“absolutely young people spend way too much time on social media.”

4. I tend to agree(with) that “我倾向于同意……”

5. It depends/I think it really depends“这取决于……”(这是一种更理性的回答)

1. That’s one way of looking at it. However……

2. That's not always true——

“some people say that getting education is the best way to prepare for the future, however that's not always true.

In some situations hands-on experience is much more valuable.”

1. I've never really thought about it——我还真没想过……

“Oh, what is your favorite wild animal?”“Well, I've never really thought about it but I'm quite fond of big cats. For example, Tigers and leopards.”

2. To sum up/To wrap up如果你想在考官终止你的回答之前主动结束对话,最好表示你马上就会回答完毕用” to sum up” 或者” to wrap up”即可

To wrap up I'm really fond of Miami because of its diversity and tropical climate.”

1.Describe a sport you are good at: Tennis

I would like to talk about tennis, which is my best love among all the popular sports. Tennis is popular all over the world, especially loved by teenagers. There is a comic book named, Prince of Tennis, illustrated by a Japanese artist. The spread of this book made tennis more popular.

The spirit of tennis is practice makes perfect, and we should never give up. When I was in sixth grade, I began to learn how to play tennis because I was a fan of the comic book. When I play tennis, I will devote myself to it. I have entered for many tennis competitions. I like winning so the procedure seems exciting. At that time, I was not good at sports. But after playing tennis, my PE grades became the best in my class.

Because of tennis, I learned that I should never give up when I face difficulties. I still have lots more to work on. Tennis is my favorite outdoor sport.

2.Movie---starstruck

I recently watched a movie called Starstruck, which was a Disney movie, talking about how a famous pop star, Christopher, fell in love with an ordinary girl, Jessica. The movie was filmed in Los Angeles and was on in February , not too old.

I chose it because of the ranking, but when I actually watched it, I realized that it was a teen’s movie. However, I didn’t regret watching it because I think I learned something from the movie. It is interesting because it sees celebrity life from another angle and tells us that we are blessed to be common people because there is more freedom for us to enjoy. In the film, it shows us how hard it might be when a person can’t make his own choices and decisions. At that point, material wealth will not matter to them because they can’t live their life the way they really want to.

It helped me to reflect on my own life. Now I see I should just enjoy my life because everyone has the right to enjoy his or her life no matter who he or she is.

3. A traditional story :Chang’e and Houyi

Chang'e is the Chinese goddess of the moon. The lunar exploration-orbiting spacecraft Chang'e 1 is named after her.

According to legend, Chang'e and her husband Houyi were immortals living in heaven. One day, the ten sons of the Jade Emperor transformed into ten suns, causing the earth to scorch. Having failed to order his sons to stop ruining the earth, the Jade Emperor summoned Houyi for help. Houyi, using his legendary archery skills, shot down nine of the sons, but spared one son to be the sun. The Jade Emperor was obviously not pleased with Houyi's solution to save the earth: nine of his sons were dead. As punishment, the Jade Emperor banished Houyi and Chang'e to live as mere mortals on earth.

Seeing that Chang'e felt extremely miserable over her loss of immortality, Houyi decided to journey on a long, perilous quest to find the pill of immortality so that the couple could be immortals again. At the end of his quest he met the Queen Mother of the West who agreed to give him the pill, but warned him that each person would only need half the pill tobecome immortal.

Houyi brought the pill home and stored it in a case. He warned Chang'e not to open the case and then left home for a while. Chang'e became too curious: she opened up the case and found the pill just as Houyi was returning home. She either accidentally or purposely swallowed the pill. She started to float into the sky because of the overdose. Chang'e kept on floating until she landed on the moon.

While she became lonely on the moon without her husband, she did have company,a jade rabbit.

4. A favorite subject

I think the most interesting subject in my high school is geography. I have a dream to travel around the world since I was a child. At that time, I would always wonder where exactly some famous cities were on the map, such as London, New York, so I am really interested in geography.

I had a great geography teacher in my high school.

She was knowledgeable, hard-working and devoted to the students. I always felt very excited when I had geography classes because I couldn’t wait to learn more about the world. Besides that, I also liked reading atlas and other books about geography during my spare time. I would always have good marks/grades on geography throughout my high school years.

When I talk about geography with my classmates or even parents, I can always impress them with my knowledge. I still like geography and hope I can travel around the world in the future.

5. sports :Jogging

Nowadays many people spend too much time indoors working or studying, but outdoor activities are very important for us to keep healthy. I like many outdoor activities, especially jogging.

I often jog in the park near my home on sunny days. I can listen to music and breathe the fresh air while I jog so I can feel really relaxed. When I jog in the park, I can also see the green trees and beautiful flowers. I can feel close to the nature. It’s also a good time for me to think important things in life. I feel it’s an important part of my daily life. Sometimes, I would ask my friends or parents to join me. It’s also a good time to communicate with others. It’s a simple activity; you only need a pair of good sneakers. It’s also suitable for many people, from children to old people. They can enjoy this activity.

I think everybody should do some outdoor activities because it’s a great way to help us get close to the nature. It’s not only good for our physical fitness but also good for our mental health.

6. A Toy

I want to describe a toy in my childhood. Actually, it was not a girly toy. It is a model car.

When I was a kid, I acted like a boy and I was very interested in car models and guns. But my mother didn’t know that and she bought many dolls for me. To tell you the truth, my father found that I liked model cars, so he bought me one as a little present.

It’s as big as a book and the color was very bright, it was red. I think the car was cool and I liked it very much. I would always take it out and study it. I figured out many functions of the car. I felt it was amazing that people could invent this tool for transportation.

Since it was the gift that my father gave me, I kept it very carefully. Even now, it still looks like a brand new car. I think it’s very meaningful for a kid to own something that they like.

7. A practical skill

I’d like to describe a skill I learned, which is to edit songs on computer by using the software, called cool edit.

I love singing, so a skill to edit songs is very practical and important for me. I first heard about it when I was eleven years old. When I was surfing the internet, a net friend told me about this software. I began to learn how to use at once by watching many online classes about it. Soon I can record my voice on the computer and after a lot of practice; I can edit many audio files perfectly. For example, I sang a song named “take me away”, after being edited, it sounds just like the original singer’s singing. It is amazing, because I can even change a girl’s voice into a boy’s voice.

I like to play with it in my spare time, so my skill has improved a lot. When I told my friends about it, all of them were really impressed.

8. A piece of equipment----airconditioner

I’d like to talk about a piece of advanced equipment in my home, an air conditioner. My parents bought it in a department store when I was sixteen years old to replace the old one.

I think it is interesting to use this equipment, just like magic. Because when we use it, it can change hot air to cold air. When we are cold, we also get warm by using it. I can’t imagine what our life will be if we don’t have it.

Of course we don’t use it all the time. Because when in spring or autumn, the weather is very comfortable, it isn’t necessary to use it. If we use it all the time, it is not environmental friendly. Also, it is not good for our health if we stay in an air-conditioned room for a long time. When I feel very hot or cold outside, I will miss my air conditioner.

9.A person who speaks a foreign language

I’d like to describe a foreign teacher of mine, Bob. He is tall and strong, with strong muscles. He is a typical American—confident and humorous. He is a very attractive man.

A lot of my classmates liked his class very much. I also chose his course in the second year of my university. At first, I didn’t feel there was anything special about him. Later, I found that he really had the ability to make his class interesting because he was so funny and good at telling jokes. He was also creative. He had so many new ways for us to practice our English.

After class, I like talking with him in both Chinese and English because he also learned some Chinese. Through communicating with him, I learned a lot about western culture.

I need to thank him. Because of him, I feel that English is actually a fun subject to learn. My interest in English grew and now I’m still interested in learning language.

10. A family but not yours

I’d like to talk about my uncle’s family. I think the life style in this family is very different from mine because as a big family, they can do many things together. It’s very different from my family; they have three children, two boys and one girl.

This is big family is always very lively. I’m the only child, so sometimes I feel lonely. But in this family, you will always hear the laughter and everyone will be influenced by their cheerfulness. They always do some outdoor activities. For example, they would have picnic on weekends and go mountain climbing at the nearby places. They sometimes go far away places for long trips. I admire them because when I look at their pictures, I could see how happy they are.

Usually I think it’s a good thing to be the only child because I could have my parents’ full attention. However, sometimes, when I look at their family, I will feel it might be even better if I have brothers and sisters.

11. A friend you admire

I want to talk about one of my playmates in my childhood. Her name is Su. She’s very beautiful. She had long black hair and big eyes. She looked like a Barbie doll.

However her personality was very different from her appearance. I like her because of her strong personality and her kindness to others. She never cried even when she hurt her knees badly and would always help and comfort others just like a big sister.

I always knew she’s a strong girl, but later I realized that she’s stronger than I thought. When we were in primary school, one day, my teacher asked her out and told her that her father died in a car accident. She came back to our classroom to get her school bag without crying. When I went to her home to ensure she was ok, I saw her comforting her mother. She was like an adult, still without crying.

Later she went to Canada and we haven’t seen each other for about five years. I can still her beautiful appearance and her strong personality. When I feel discouraged, I will always remember her and I can become strong because of her influence.

12. A successful foreign person

There are many successful people in the world. Since I’m a football fan, I’d like to talk about David Beckham, a successful football player. A lot of people know him not because he’s an excellent football player but because of his good looking. Especially a lot of women, they regard him as a big sport star. But that’s not the reason I admire him. I think he’s a successful man because he works hard and never gives up.

As a young player, he was blamed for his mistake that caused the failure of his national team in the world cup. A lot of people laughed at him, but he was not defeated and tried harder than before. In , his score helped his national team to win the game against Greece, which enabled them to enter world cup in the next year. He became a national hero overnight.

I learned a lot from him. Sometimes, we might fail once or several times but it doesn’t mean we will never succeed. It’s always good to keep trying. I believe hard work will eventually make a big difference.

13.a quiz show: One Versus One Hundred

I only watch TV occasionally, but there are still many TV programs that I like. I recently watched a program called 1 versus 100, which is a quiz show presented on Hunan TV channel.

We can easily tell the nature of the program by hearing the name. There will be one challenger versus one hundred opponents at each show. Both the one and the one hundred will be given the same multiple-choice questions. One question is asked at a time, and the one hundred answer first, then it will be the one’s turn. Since the one is alone, during the show he/she is allowed to ask for help three times, including making a phone call, following the majority, or asking the presenter to eliminate one wrong answer.

Each time, some of the one hundred will be eliminated if they get the answer wrong. In the end, if the one answers all the questions correctly, the one will win the game and get a big amount of money as the prize. However, if the one fails, the money will be divided by the remaining opponents. Maybe because of the big prize or the competitive atmosphere, the participants are always very excited.

The reason I like it is that this quiz show asks some simple questions that we are supposed to know but a lot of people actually have never thought about them. For example, one question asked was about the picture on the back of a 50 yuan RMB, but the majority of the one hundred got this simple question wrong. I have seen several shows, but I have never seen the one answered all the questions correctly. I began to wonder that maybe I could enter for the show, too, because I actually knew the answers of a lot of their questions. I think it will be fun if I can try.

14. Advertisement

I want to tell you an advertisement about a health product called Naobaijin. It’s such a famous advertisement that almost everybody in China can recite the lines of the advertisement.

The advertisement is very simple. An old couple tell us that they don’t need any gift for the spring festival but naobaijin. It has been showed on TV year after year, especially during the Spring Festival. In China, young people are supposed to buy presents for the older generation during Chinese New Year, but they usually don’t have many good choices except cigarette and wine. These are not good for their health. Because Naobaijin is a very healthy gift for older people, so it becomes popular. You would see it everywhere from newspapers to internet.

A lot of people might feel tired of it, but I think it is a successful advertisement although it is not creative. It’s simple to remember so everybody knows this product now. It has drawn our attentions successfully and brought fortune to the manufacturer.

15:Hotpot Restaurant

I’d like to talk about a hotpot restaurant, called super hot, in my hometown.

16. Describe a modern building

Well, everyday there are new buildings being constructed. No matter in what styles they are built, as long as they are using the modern techniques and modern materials, they are modern buildings. Here, I’d like to talk about the Hangzhou grand theater, a very special modern building. Made of steel and galss, golden in color, it looks like a sun resting on the earth.

Designed by internationally known Canadian architect, Hangzhou Grand Theatre covers 100,000 square meters with a total construction area of 55,000 square meters. It consists of an opera house, a concert hall, a multifunction hall, an open air stage and a culture square.

The silky titanium roof symbolizes the pearl; the slant surface made of the double curved glass curtain wall represents the moon; a pool of over 6000 square meters in front of Hangzhou Grand Theatre stands for the beautiful West Lake.

Located in the center of the building and looking like a U shape, the Opera House has altogether 1600 seats with red color as its basic tune. Designed as a classical shoe box, the concert hall has totally 600 seats with blue color as its basic tune. Breaking through the traditional mode, with 400 seats, lifts and chairs that can be turned up and down, the Multifunction Hall can achieve the flexibility of space arrangement according to specific requirements.

With the performing stage surrounded by the seats, and the whole stage surrounded by a water-pool with a total accommodation of 1000 people, the Open Air Stage imitated ancient Roman classical style of architecture.

Hangzhou grand theater is really a modern building, and a very special one.

“I need to learn English, which is very important because it’ll help me get a good job in international trade, which I'm studying right now.”

“I work in a software company as a computer programmer, which is quite a challenging job because our clients usually want us to write programs in a short period of time.”

“Watching films, especially comedy, is my favorite pastime although (or, but) I don’t like films with a lot of violence or horror films.”

“I don’t ride my bicycle very often because (or, since) it’s faster to take the bus to university although (or, but) I do use it on the weekends when I have no classes.”

“Yes, Chinese people do like growing flowers but since(or, but because) many people live in apartments in cities it’s not easy to grow flowers although people who have a balcony, especially retired people, sometimes grow flowers on their balcony.”

“Well, not really, no, because although (or, even though or, despite the fact that) the apartments are all modern and clean, there are very few places for children to play outside.”

“I’m interested in sport but, besides that (or, as well as that), there are many other things that I’m interested in, such as (or, like or for example or for instance) computers and music.”

“Three years ago, my father gave me some good advice, which was very useful because it saved me from making a very unsuitable career choice.”

“When I was in Second Year of high school, I had a math’s teacher named Mr. Wang who really changed my life by inspiring me to love mathematics.”

“To tell you the truth, I don't play much sport nor do I walk much because I drive my car everywhere, even to my office, which is near my home although I sometimes play table tennis, which I'm quite good at. I know I'd have more energy if I did more exercise but I just don't seem to find the time for exercise because I'm too busy with my work.”

1. I love taking pictures.

They remind me of many life events, happy or sad, exciting or boring.

My family has a habit of taking a family picture every 2 or 3 years.

2. The most special photo I have is a family picture we’ve taken last year right before I

went to Beijng to start my college.

As usual, it shows mom, dad and me, with me, as always, in the middle.

3. My dad suggested to go to a photo studio to do it instead of the usual routine of going to a park and snapping a casual picture.

So a professional photographer/ cameraman took it.

4. My dad said it should be special since my college signifies (象征着,标志着) the beginning of my adulthood. And the picture was taken a little bit after my 18th birthday, which means a person becomes a grown up in China.

5. This picture is quite special to me because I put it right near my pillow in my dorm. So when I feel homesick, I often look at it, look at mom and dad’s loving and encouraging smiles. When I’m weak and lonely, it gives me strength, and reassures me that I have a happy family at my back and I should feel grateful for life.
