大学英语四级考试中的作文，由于受到时间、命题、篇幅和素材收集等诸多因素的限制， 跟平常的写作有很多不同之处。为了使同学们充分发挥现有的英语水平，使写作紧扣题目，用词得当，同时力争达到短小精悍、言简意赅、通顺流畅的效果，建议将写作步骤简化为：审题、构思、写作和定稿。
1. 审题
审题是命题作文写作过程中必不可少的第一步，即通过对标题进行分析，理解题意，确定文章的体裁，抓住中心思想，选准目标，有的放矢。审题时要弄清楚试题对考生的要求，分清是记叙文，说明文，还是议论文。通过审题，还要从题目中找出关键词，抻出该题目含概了哪几个方面的内容，尤其是侧重点。例如，“How I Finance My College Education”重点应放在“How”和“I”上，侧重写我怎样筹措上大学的费用；再如“The World Is Getting Smaller and Smaller”，世界变得越来越小应该是这篇文章的中心，通过“交通和通讯工具的发达”和“人们交往的频繁”来论证“世界变得越来越小”。
2. 构思

3. 写作
构思完成后进入写作阶段，写作就是将构思阶段搜集到的素材组织成文章。构思过程中得到的是些杂乱无序的字、词、句，需要通过一些过渡手段将其连接成完整的文章。在写作过程中同时完成对构思素材的取舍增补，框架结构的调整，段落、语句顺序的排列，并兼顾各种语法现象。
4. 定稿
文章写出来了，难免会出现各种各样的错误或不足，有些是简单的、不该出现的错误，所以写完作文后要进行检查、修改，使文章得以完善，到此时才算大功告成，完成定稿。

英语四级考试作文和翻译一般能得160分左右。
英语四级卷面总分为710分，作文及翻译各占15%，也就是各106.5分，作文和翻译分数一共212分。
