句间取反/句内取反:but, yet, however, nevertheless,notwithstanding

句内取反的词:although, (even) though, while, whereas, , despite, in spite of

结构取反:in contrast (to), on the contrary, on the other hand, whatever, otherwise,

indeed, in fact, rather, just as, also, almost, even, similarly, correspondingly, accordingly, in the same way 表示平行并列关系。

The hierarchy of medical occupations is in many ways a ____ system; its strata remain___ and the practitioners in them have very little vertical mobility.

Blank (i) Blank (ii)

A caste D flexible

B training E intact

C health F inferior

The hierarchy of medical occupations is in many ways a ____ system。 。所以第一空直接 = hierarchy = caste 等级制度。

1: the practitioners in them have very little vertical mobility = not fluid = immutable说明层级固定的。E. intact = not changed = untouched

The hierarchy of medical occupations is in many ways a ___ system ; its strata remain intact and the practitioners in them have very little vertical mobility.

A health

B delivery

C regimental

D training

E caste

in many way在很大程度上(in one/a/some way,在某种程度上)

stratum(复数strata)阶层

[caste]

During the widespread fuel shortage , the price of gasoline was so ___ that suppliers were generally thought to be ___ the consumer.

A reactive

D placating

B depressed

E gouging

C excessive

F cheating

so…that…

如果我说油价是10美元每单位,但我其实收你50美元每单位,而不告诉你多收的事实,是欺骗cheat;

The self-important cant of musicologists on record jackets often suggests that true appreciation of the music is an _____ process closed to the uninitiated listeners, however enthusiastic.

(A) unreliable

(B) arcane

(C) arrogant

(D) elementary

(E) intuitive

The most technologically advanced societies have been responsible for the greatest_____; indeed, savagery seems to be in direct proportion to_____.

(A) wars ... viciousness

(B) catastrophes ... ill-will

(C) atrocities ... development

(D) inventions ... know-how

(E) triumphs ... civilization

凡是出现but, yet, however, nevertheless, although, (even) though, while, whereas, notwithstanding, despite, in spite of, in contrast (to), on the contrary, on the other hand, whatever, otherwise, ironically, paradoxically, curiously, surprisingly 等带有转折逆转含义的题目,则代入空格的正确选项必与中心线索构成语义对立的反义词关系。

Most plant species exhibit ____ in their geographical distribution: often, a given species is found over a large geographical area, but individual populations within that range are widely ____ .

Blank (i) Blank (ii)

A discontinuity D separated

B density E observed

C concentration F adaptable

a. 第二空应填入一个形容词,but引导前后的转折,所以第二空应与is found over a large geographical area形成对比,所以在DEF三个选项中D.

Science advances in _____spiral in that each new conceptual scheme _____the phenomena explained by its predecessors and adds to those explanations.

(A) a discontinuous ... decries

(B) a repetitive ... vitiates

(C) a widening ... embrace

(D) an anomalous ... captures

(E) an explosive ... questions

此外,indeed, just as, also, almost, even, similarly, correspondingly, accordingly, in the same way 等亦属并列关系。

The hierarchy of medical occupations is in many ways a ____ system; its strata remain___ and the practitioners in them have very little vertical mobility.

Blank (i) Blank (ii)

A caste D flexible

B training E intact

C health F inferior

and并列两个具有 相同属性的事物,所以从and后面找对线索:“其中的从业医师没有太大的垂直流动性(the practitioners in them have very little vertical mobility.) E. intact : having no relevant component removed or destroyed。

1:To believe that a culture’s achievement can be measured by the --- ---- of its written material requires one to accept that a page of junk mail is as ------- as a page of great literature.

A、nature.. readable

B、quality.. prevalent

C、timelessness.. understandable

D、applicability.. eloquent E、volume.. valuable

2:It is no accident that most people find Davis’ book disturbing, for it is -- ---- to undermine a number beliefs they have long -------

A、calculated..cherished

B、annotated..assimilated

C、intended..denied

D、anxious..misunderstood

E、reputed.. anticipated

3:Given the failure of independent laboratories to replicate the results of Dr. Johnson’s experiment, only the most ------- supporters of her hypothesis would be foolish enough to claim that it had been adequately -------

A、fastidious.. defined

B、partisan.. verified

C、vigilant.. publicized

D、enlightened.. researched

E、fervent.. undermined

A (2)A;It's wrong/foolish/presumptuous to say 非A

主动句与被动句重复:is the result of is the outgrowth of is the product of A?B;B?by A

非 A(无被动句标志词)

比较句重复:to the same degree/extent as…as more/less -er better than

手段目的句重复:by for in terms of

时间对比句重复:once formerly initial pristine erstwhile hereto hithertonow future before recent begin start create until no longer previous

比喻句重复:like as

小粘连:and but rather than even as…as so…as to…

并列:and also or just as similarly correspondingly in the same way indeed accordingly

递进:even

因果:derive from lead to due to because cause since for thereforethus hence in that so…that so…as to as a result result in result fromaccordingly consequently give rise to

B. 让步、转折:even though although even…though while whereas but yethowever nevertheless notwithstanding despite in spite of in contrast toon the contrary on the other hand far from rather than whateverotherwise ironically illogically paradoxically curiously surprisinglyunfortunately

E. 照应:人称代词:it 指示代词:such this that those these 定冠词:the

F. 主体词:主体动词:continue remain shift from…to oscillate between…and turn…into reconcile…and…

Exercise 26

6. Her first concert appearance was disappointingly perfunctory and derivative rather than the ____ performance in the ___ style we had anticipated.

A inspired

B prosaic

C literal

D tenuous

E innovative

F mechanical

我们来看韦氏词典对这个词的解释“a : according with the letter of the scriptures b : adhering to fact or to the ordinary construction or primary meaning of a term or expression : ACTUAL c : free from exaggeration or embellishment d : characterized by a concern mainly with facts ”其中“c : free from exaggeration or embellishment”意思是“没有夸张和修饰”。

Exercise 26

2. Although scientists claim that the seemingly_____ language of their reports is more precise than the figurative language of fiction, the language of science, like all language, is inherently______.

A ornamental

B subjective

C literal

D allusive

E unintelligible

F complex

1:To believe that a culture’s achievement can be measured by the --- ---- of its written material requires one to accept that a page of junk mail is as ------- as a page of great literature.

A、nature.. readable B、quality.. prevalent

C、timelessness.. understandable

D、applicability.. eloquent E、volume.. valuable

In parts of the Arctic, the land grades into the landfast ice so ____ that you can walk off the coast and not know you are over the hidden sea.

(A) permanently (B) imperceptibly (C) irregularly (D) precariously (E) relentlessly

KEY: B

1. 关键字:“So … that …” 结构

2. “So … that …”

[1]. (A) permanently:(永久地)continuing or enduring without fundamental or marked change : STABLE

[2]. (B) imperceptibly:(不被察觉地)not perceptible by a sense or by the mind

[3]. (C) irregularly:(不规则地)lacking continuity or regularity especially of occurrence or activity

[4]. (D) precariously:(不安全地、随意地)dependent on chance circumstances, unknown conditions, or uncertain developments

[5]. (E) relentlessly:(无情地、残酷地)showing or promising no abatement of severity, intensity, strength, or pace

The (i) ____ of Vladimir Nabokov as one of North America’s literary giants has thrown the spotlight on his peripheral activities and has thus served to (ii) ____ his efforts as an amateur entomologist.

BLANK(i) (A) stigmatization B) lionization (C) marginalization

BLANK(ii)(D) foregrounded (E)transcend (F) obscure

KEY: BD

[1]. (A) stigmatization:(玷污)to mark with stigmata

[2]. (B) lionization:(崇拜)to treat as an object of great interest or importance

[3]. (C) marginalization:(边缘化)to relegate to an unimportant or powerless position within a society or group

[4]. (D) foregrounded:(着重强调)to bring to the foreground especially : to give prominence or emphasis to

[5]. (E) transcend:(超越)to rise above or go beyond the limits of

[6]. (F) obscure:(使……模糊)to conceal or hide by or as if by covering

Economic competition among nations may lead to new forms of economic protectionism that hearken back to the mercantilism of an earlier age: there are signs today that such protectionism is indeed ____.

(A) evanescent (B) resurgent (C) recrudescent (D) transitory (E) controversial (F) inimical

KEY: BC

(A) evanescent:(易逝的)tending to vanish like vapor synonyms see TRANSIENT

(B) resurgent:(复活的)undergoing or tending to produce resurgence

(C) recrudescent:(复发的)breaking out again : RENEWING

(D) transitory:(易逝的)of brief duration : TEMPORARY synonyms see TRANSIENT

(E) controversial:(引起争端的)of, relating to, or arousing controversy (F) inimical:(敌视的)having the disposition of an enemy : hostile

The most technologically advanced societies have been responsible for the greatest ----------; indeed, savagery seems to be in direct proportion to -----.

(A) wars ... viciousness

(B) catastrophes ... ill-will

(C) atrocities ... development

(D) inventions ... know-how

(E) triumphs ... civilization

atrocities ... development。

triumph: 1.

第一, 寻找signpost(逻辑关系指路标),判断逻辑关系。

例如,转折关系的signpost有despite, although, however等等,因果关系的signpost有for the reason that, because, consequently等等。

首先来看一道来自于《The Official Guide to the GRE revised General Test》(新GRE的官方指南)的样题。

It is refreshing to read a book about our planet by an author who does not allow facts to be (i) ____ by politics: well aware of the political disputes about the effects of human activities on climate and biodiversity, this author does not permit them to (ii) _____ his comprehensive description of what we know about our biosphere. He emphasizes the enormous gaps in our knowledge, the sparseness of our observations, and the (iii) _____, calling attention to the many aspects of planetary evolution that must be better understood before we can accurately diagnose the condition of our planet. (OG-P49.1)

BLANK(i)BLANK(ii)BLANK(iii)

A overshadowedD enhanceG plausibility of our hypotheses

B invalidatedE obscureH certainty of our entitlement

C illuminatedF underscoreI superficiality of our theories

Statements presented as fact in a patent application are (i) _____ unless a good reason for doubt is found. The invention has only to be deemed “more likely than not” to work in order to receive initial approval. And, although thousands of patents are challenged in court for other reasons, no incentive exists for anyone to expend effort (ii) _____ the science of an erroneous patent. For this reason the endless stream of (iii) ____ devices will continue to yield occasional patent. (OG-P61.5)

BLANK(i)BLANK(ii)BLANK(iii)

A presumed verifiable D corroboratingG novel

B carefully scrutinizedE advancingH bogus

C considered capriciousF debunkingI obsolete

所谓正面陈述,即是以一肯定句式作出的表述,如“He is a good person”。所谓反面陈述,即是以一否定句式再加上一个与正面内涵相反的概念作出的表述,如“He is not a bad person” 或 “It is wrong to say that he is a bad person”。

The poet W. H. Auden believed that the greatest poets of his age were almost necessarily irresponsible, that the possession of great gifts ---------- the ---------- to abuse them.

(A) negates ... temptation

(B) controls ... resolution

(C) engenders ... propensity

(D) tempers ... proclivity

(E) obviates ... inclination

因果、(because, in that, for, therefore, thus, accordingly, consequently, given, hence, so…that, so...as to, if…then, when...then, as long as……)转折、(albeit, although, though, but, despite, even though, however, in spite of, nevertheless, nonetheless, notwithstanding, while, whatever, regardless, even if, even though, yet, and yet……)递进、(even, indeed………)对比、(in contrast, on the contrary, far from, on the other hand, rather than, instead of, not…but, paradoxically, ironically, surprisingly, unexpectedly, curiously……)

The eradication of pollution is not merely a matter of ___, though the majestic beauty of nature is indeed an important consideration.

A. economics B. legislation C. cleanliness D. aesthetics E. restoration

Comparatively few rock musicians are willing to laugh at themselves, although a hint of----can boost sales of video clips very nicely.

A. self-deprecation B. congeniality C. cynicism D. embarrassment E. self-doubt

Melodramas, which presented stark oppositions between innocence and criminality, virtue and corruption, good and evil, were popular precisely because they offered the audience a world ___of___.

A. bereft.. theatricality B. composed.. adversity C. full.. circumstantiality D. deprived.. polarity

E. devoid.. neutrality

The Muses are___deities: they avenge themselves without mercy on those who weary of their charms.

A. rueful B. ingenuous C. solicitous D. vindictive E. dispassionate

Unenlightened authoritarian managers rarely recognize a crucial reason for the low levels of serious conflict among members of democratically run work groups: a modicum of tolerance for dissent often prevents___.

A. demur B. schism C. cooperation D. compliance E. shortsightedness

The valedictory address, as it has developed in American colleges and universities over the years, has become a very strict form, a literary ___ that permits very little ___.

A. text.. clarity B. work.. tradition C. genre.. deviation

D. oration.. grandiloquence E. achievement.. rigidity

a literary ___ that permits very little ___. 是前面的a very strict form的同位语,所以第一空格填form的同义或近义词,that permits very little___.

Many more eighteenth-century novels were written by women than by men, but this dominance has, until very

recently, been regarded merely as ___ fact, a bit of arcane knowledge noted only by bibliographers.

A. a controversial B. a statistical C. an analytical D. an explicit E. an unimpeachable

这道题同样,a bit of arcane knowledge noted only by bibliographers.

Longdale and Stern discovered that mitochondria and chloroplasts ___ a long, identifiable sequence of DNA; such a coincidence could be ___ only by the transfer of DNA between the two systems.

A. manufacture.. accomplished B. reveal.. repeated C. exhibit.. determined

D. share.. explained E. maintain.. contradicted

Laws do not ensure social order since laws can always be ___ , which makes them ___ unless the authorities have the will and the power to detect and punish wrongdoing.

A. contested.. provisional B. circumvented.. antiquated C. repealed.. vulnerable

D. violated.. ineffective E. modified.. unstable

Johnson never ___ to ignore the standards of decent conduct mandated by company policy if ___ compliance with instructions from his superiors enabled him to do so, whatever the effects on his subordinates.

A. deigned.. tacit B. attempted.. halfhearted C. intended.. direct

D. scrupled.. literal E. wished.. feigned

Ironically, the party leaders encountered no greater ___ their efforts to build a progressive party than the ___ of the progressives already elected to the legislature.

A. support for.. advocacy B. threat to.. promise C. benefit from.. success

D. obstacle to.. resistance E. praise for.. reputation

Although ___ is usually thought to spring from regret for having done something wrong, it may be that its origin

is the realization that one's own nature is irremediably ___.

A. contrition.. resilient B. certitude.. confident C.skepticism.. innocent

D. remorse.. flawed E. resignation. frivolous

Any language is a conspiracy against experience in the sense that it is a collective attempt to ___ experience by reducing it into discrete parcels.

A. extrapolate B. transcribe C. complicate D. amplify E. manage

Natural selection tends to eliminate genes that cause inherited diseases, acting most strongly against the most severe diseases; consequently, hereditary diseases that are ___ would be expected to be very ___, but, surprisingly, they are not.

A. lethal.. rare B. untreated.. dangerous C. unusual.. refractory

D. new.. perplexing E. widespread.. acute

Although ___, almost self-effacing in his private life, he displays in his plays and essays a strong ___ publicity and controversy.

A. conventional.. interest in B. monotonous.. reliance on C. shy.. aversion toward

D. retiring.. penchant for E. evasive.. impatience with

Considering how long she had yearned to see Italy, her first reaction was curiously ___.

A. meditative B. tepid C. categorical D. unoriginal E. insightful

The hierarchy of medical occupations is in many ways a ___ system; its strata remain ___ and the practitioners in them have very little vertical mobility.

A. health.. skilled B. delivery.. basic C. regimental.. flexible

D. training.. inferior E. caste.. intact

The natural balance between prey and predator has been increasingly ___, most frequently by human intervention.

A. celebrated B. predicted C. observed D. disturbed E. questioned

Poe's ___ reviews of contemporary fiction, which often find great merit in otherwise ___ literary gems, must make us respect his critical judgment in addition to his well-known literary talent.

A. thorough.. completed B. petulant.. unpopular C. insightful.. unappreciated

D. enthusiastic.. acclaimed E. harsh.. undeserving

Aptly enough, this work so imbued with the notion of changing times and styles has been constantly ___ over the years, thereby reflecting its own mutability.

A.appreciated B. emulated C. criticized D. revised E. reprinted

1:It is assumed that scientists will avoid making _____ claims about the results of their experiments because of the likelihood that they will be exposed when other researchers cannot _____ their findings.

A. Hypothetical… evaluate

B. Fraudulent… duplicate

C. Verifiable… contradict

D. Radical… contest

E. Extravagant… dispute

2:Those who fear the influence of television deliberately_______ its persuasive power, hoping that they might keep knowledge of its potential to effect social change from being widely disseminated.

(A) promote

(B) underplay

(C) excuse

(D) laud

(E) suspect

1: The scientist found it puzzling that his rival‘s theory retained its_______ despite widespread suggestions that it was now _______.

A. perspective…dated

B. currency…moribund

C. appeal …accepted

D. complexity…unfathomable

E. credibility…recognized

2: Paleontologists‘ assumptions about the equable nature of the climate on the primeval island of Pangaea are ________ computer simulations indicating that the island‘s temperatures tended to _______ during the course of a year.

A. based on… cool

B. confirmed by… vary

C. challenged by…stabilize

D. bolstered by…soar

E. undermined by…fluctuate

To pay for the extra spending under this international poverty plan, each American would have to contribute less than the cost of buying a premium cup of coffee once a week. But financial aid is not(i)____, and even if the funding recommended here were to (ii)____, the grandest objectives may well remain unfulfilled. Nonetheless, carefully targeted aid can reward responsible governments, (iii)____ individual initiative, and alleviate suffering. Many will think that's worth a cup of coffee.

Blank(i) Blank(ii) Blank(iii)

A.an impediment D.be insufficient G. obviate

B.a panacea E.recede H.temper

C.a malady F.materialize I.encourage

example

1. as the creation of new knowledge through science has become ---- resistance to innovation has become less ---- taking the form of inertia rather than direct attack.

a. controversial sporadic

b. institutionalized aggressive

c. essential effective

d. public circumspect

e. suspect lively

1. The economists were _______ to find that the theory that they had considered ________ crumbled when modern techniques for economic modeling made it possible to make new kinds of observation that contradicted its fundamental assumptions.

A surprised . . . problematic

B overjoyed . . . useful

C stunned . . . invulnerable

D disappointed . . . faulty

E astonished . . . suspect

2. Because he saw no_______ to the task assigned him, he worked at it in a very ________ way.

A function ... systematic

B method ... dutiful

C purpose ... diligent

D end ... rigid

E point ... perfunctory

Far from viewing Jefferson as a skeptical but enlightened intellectual, historians of the 1960’s portrayed him as ______ thinker, eager to fill the young with his political orthodoxy while censoring ideas he did not like.

A. an adventurous

B. a doctrinaire

C. an eclectic

D. a judicious

E. a cynical

A restaurant’s menu is generally reflected in its décor; however, despite this restaurant’s ______ appearance it is pedestrian in the menu it offers.

A. elegant

B. tawdry

C. modern

D. traditional

E. conventional

F. chic

There has been much hand-writing about how unprepared American students are for college. Graff reverses this perspective, suggesting that colleges are unprepared for students. In his analysis, the university culture is largely (i)______ entering students because academic culture fails to make connections to the kinds of arguments and cultural references that students grasp. Understandably, many students view academic life as (ii)______ ritual.

Blank (i) Blank (ii)

A. primed for D. an arcane

B. opaque to E. a laudable

C. essential for F. painstaking

空格(i)可以通过第一、二句话的描述来进行推断,同时也可以用 “because academic culture fails to make connections to the kinds of arguments and cultural references that students grasp”进行推断,表示的是对学生来说“unprepared”的意思,即负面的评价,所以答案为“opaque to”。同理,空格(ii)也要表明学生对学术生活“不理解”的态度,因此答案为“an arcane(known or knowableonly to the initiate)”。

[Poe, Edgar Allan]
