GRE填空提示取反的动词:take place of/replace with

take place of/replace with

4.1. For wily political press of?cers, the art of spin is not quite

supplanting truth with lies, but instead it aspires to replace awkward

complexity with catchy___; successful spin creates the impression of unavoidable

common sense.

A. novelties

B. slogans

C. falsehoods

D. duplicity

E. simplicity

F. intelligibility

replace with

4.2 Although its gray text blocks and black-and-white illustrations give it

a sober mien, this one-stop resource can take the place of a dozen less ______

texts.

A. exhaustive

B. interesting

C. appealing

D. original

E. educational

F. comprehensive

resource,后面是less____ texts(这里要明确“less”,是个否定词,要进行一次取反)。

GRE填空提示取反的动词:compensate for/make up for

3. For the urban researcher, the long lives of ancientcities can provide

ample chronological data, making up for the paucity stemming from relative

______ of most present-day cities.

A. complexity

B. formlessness

C. transparency

D. diversity

E. youthfulness

reconcile

2. The chairman, faced with the need to forge a consensus on a number of

proposals, acknowledged that it would be dif?cult to reconcile the push for a

radical overhaul with the stance of those who want ______ change.

A. deliberate

B. indiscriminate

C. genuine

D. immediate

E. wholesale

reconcile……with

A the push for a radical overhaul 和 B want ____ change.

for(追求)对应了want(想要);overhaul(改革)对应了change(变化),所以我们只能对radical取反,选择radical的反义词。

37.5. Although some consider forcefulness and persistence to be two traits desirable to the same degree, I think that making a violent effort is much less useful than maintaining a steady one.

58.3. Joe spoke of superfluous and vital matters with exactly the same degree of intensity, as though for him serious mattered neither more nor less than did trivialities.

9.2. A perennial goal in zoology is to infer function from structure, relating the behavior of am organism to its physical form and cellular organization.

11.7. When theories formerly considered to be disinterested in their scientific objectivity are found instead to reflect a consistent observational and evaluative bias, then the presumed neutrality of science gives way to the recognition that categories of knowledge are human construction.

The most vivid expression of such errors occurs in genetically identical( isogenic ) organisms. Even when reared under the same conditions, isogenic organisms are rarely exact copies of one another, and their differences have revealed much about the random variations that result from an organism’s limited supply of genetic information. In isogenic Daphniae, for example, even though the position, size, and branching pattern of each optic neuron are remarkably constant, there is some variability in connectivity, and the number of synapses varies greatly. This variability is probably the result of random scatter beyond the resolution of genetic control and is best termed “imprecision”, since its converse, the degree of clustering about a mean, is conventionally, called “precision”.

1:To believe that a culture’s achievement can be measured by the --- ---- of its written material requires one to accept that a page of junk mail is as ------- as a page of great literature.

A、nature... readable B、quality... prevalent

C、timelessness... understandable

D、applicability... eloquent E、volume... valuable

2:It is no accident that most people find Davis’ book disturbing, for it is -- ---- to undermine a number beliefs they have long -------

A、calculated..cherished B、annotated..assimilated

C、intended..denied D、anxious..misunderstood

E、reputed... anticipated

3:Given the failure of independent laboratories to replicate the results of Dr. Johnson’s experiment, only the most ------- supporters of her hypothesis would be foolish enough to claim that it had been adequately -------

A、fastidious... defined B、partisan... verified

C、vigilant... publicized D、enlightened... researched

E、fervent... undermined

在某些词组性质的习语中,所出现的介词在搭配上是固定的,如be consistent with, respond to , show insight into等。

His theories, though criticised by economists of more orthodox bent, have had enormous --------- on governmental fiscal policies.

(A) restraint

(B) impact

(C) acceptance

(D) tension

(E) reliance

In 1921 Antioch College adopted a policy requiring students to --------- beyond their stacks of books and contribute their talents to the working world in order to earn their bachelor's degree.

(A) rise

(B) venture

(C) probe

(D) excel

(E) strut

如果将五个选项中的动词全部作不及物动词处理的话,那么,(A) rise应与above搭配,(C) probe应与into搭配,(D)excel应与in或at搭配。

Unenlightened authoritarian managers rarely recognize a crucial reason for the low levels of serious conflict among members of democratically run work groups: a modicum of tolerance for dissent often prevents ___ .

A demur

B schism

C cooperation

D compliance

F disband

Speakers and listeners are often at odds: language that is easy for the receiver to understand is often difficult to ___ , and that which is easily formulated can be hard to ___ .

A estimate

D confirm

B produce

E ignore

C suppress

F comprehend

“ NBA = National Basketball Association ”

Psychology has slowly evolved into an ___ scientific discipline that now functions autonomously with the same privileges and responsibilities as other sciences.

A independent

B unusual

C outmoded

D uncontrolled

E inactive

选A

b.肯定与否定重复双重否定的标志:“it is wrong /presumptuous/irony/paradoxically/foolish to say that…”

c.主动被动重复一般用by来引导,A-B,Bby A;或者将by换为三个短语代替:is the result of,is the

outgrowth of,is the product of.此句基础上还可以变化为:非a->非B;Bby A.

d.逆否重复AB,B―>A.没有by,the result of,the outgrowth of,the product of等。

f.手段和目的A by BB for A;by=in thems of;

before,once,formerly,initial,pristine,erstawhile,hereto,hitherto,now,furture或

者beging,start,create,或者until,no longer等。

10.小连接:and,but,rather,even,as..as.,so as to连接对称的两个形容词,动词,副词或者不定式短语。

Flawed as it may be for it is constructed by subjective scientists, science itself has methods that help us _____ our bias and talk about objective reality with some validity.

A. bypass

B. reduce

C. exacerbate

D. magnify

E. acknowledge

F. circumvent

Given the (i)___ committees and the (ii)___ nature of its investigation , it would be unreasonable to gainsay the committee's conclusions at first glance.

Blank (i) Blank (ii)

A. sterling reputation of D. superficial

B. lack of funding for E. spontaneous

C. ad hoc existence of F. exhaustive

Instead of demonstrating the ___ of archaeological applications of electronic remote sensing, the pioneering study became, to some skeptics , an illustration of the imprudence of interpreting sites based on virtual archeology .

A. ubiquity

B. redundancy

C. limitation

D. complexity

E. promise

instead of demonstrating the ___ ,the study became an demonstration of imprudence .

Apparently, advanced tortoises evolved multiple times: the high-domed shells and columnar, elephantine feet of current forms are specializations for terrestrial life that evolved ___ on each continent.

A. independently

B. interchangeably

C. paradoxically

D. simultaneously

E. symmetrically

A

advanced “充分进化” 只是种接近的意译,根据 MMC 应该解释为 “ much evolved from an early ancestral type ”,进化得跟原型差别很大的

GRE写作Argument/Issue区别详解
