Through daily communication and interaction, we are unavoidably affected by people around us and at the same time we also exert certain impact on others. Given the importance of peer influence, it is necessary for us to clearly identify traits and characters of surrounding people. Some people prefer to judge from a person’s friends, but I do not think this is an effective method.

Admittedly, people holding this opinion may argue that birds of a feather flock together. The reason why people become friends is that they share something in common, such as personalities and hobbies. For instance, a person interested in playing basketball must frequently visit basketball court where he meets mates and enjoys the game together. All these make them more attractive to each other. Therefore, it is easy to draw the conclusion that a person with many friends who are fond of playing basketball is highly likely a basketball lover, too. Moreover, he may also have characters that sport fans share, like sportsmanship, perseverance, and teamwork spirits.

However, such conclusion is open to much criticism. To begin with, from one’s friends, we may just get to know a small part of this person. As mentioned above, the information we can collect is restricted to what he likes doing with friends and relevant characters. But in fact, an individual is very complicated, as under various occasions, he behaves differently, demonstrates divergent traits, or even generate controversial thoughts. For example, it is possible that a boy with much tenacity to train his basketball skills with friends actually has no will power to improve his academic performance, or even can hardly finish reading in literature class. Then, we cannot regard him as a person with perseverance, and the conclusion yielded from what type of friends he has is wrong.

Secondly, this approach fails when a person has too many friends. There are people who are very popular, because of their social skills, sense of humor or warmheartedness. Consequently, they are always surrounded by various kinds of friends wherever they go. Among those friends, there might be people with different personalities. A good example is the cheerleader, the focus in almost every school. With charming appearance and excellent dancing skills, she never fails to attract both boys who admire her beauty and girls who feel cool to be friend with her. In a large group of friends, there will be people showing divergent traits, like quiet and talkative, introversive and extroversive, etc.

To sum up, from one’s friends, we may get to know some parts of a person, but the information is quite limited and controversial if he has too many companions.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One can learn a lot about a person from the type of friends this person has.

Thanks to the efforts of mass medias, modern citizens are increasingly aware of the severity of environment problems. Facing the worsening conditions on earth, people have adopted various methods to protect the environment, such as giving up driving, recycling objects and buying local organic food. In my mind, the last one is the simplest but most effective solution that we common people can take to preserve environment.

In the first place, for the cultivation of organic food, farmers are strictly restrained to use fertilizers and pesticides which contribute a lot to pollution. It is true that fertilizers and pesticides can help farmers increase yields and reduce costs. In the long term, however, many chemical elements are left in soil and drain to local water system, like underground water and rivers. The accumulation of those chemical elements is detrimental to local ecosystem, as some small animals, such as fish and frog, may take in and store them in their body. In addition, while killing harmful insects, pesticides are also poisonous to birds who prey on them. So, it is fair to say that if more people buy local organic food, there will be fewer fertilizers and pesticides applied, and therefore less pressure on the environment.

In the second place, to decrease the market share of food transported from places far away is to reduce energy consumption, especially gasoline and electricity. We have to notice that the rapid economic development and population growth is burning up our natural resources. The improvement of living standards also exacerbates energy crisis. If local food is actually enough to satisfy people’s needs, the long distance transportation of food is absolutely unnecessary but a waste of energy. Even worse, some kinds of food have to be carefully stored under certain temperature or be frozen. Then, the transportation cost is even higher. For example, fresh tropical fruits transported by air to cities in the northern areas are usually sold at a high price which includes the cost of transportation. Therefore, when we buy local food, we are actually save energy.

In the third place, walking and bicycling to work or study place and recycling old objects are not feasible or effective in conserving environment. For some citizens, driving to the office or school is the only choice, as there is no convenient access to public transportation and walking and cycling will cost too much time on the road. In addition, although it is a good habit to recycle old objects, this may generate other problems. For instance, there must be enough space in the room for the storage of old subjects, which is quite inconvenient for people renting a small flat.

To sum up, individuals can contribute a lot to environment preservation. Among all the methods discussed above, the purchase of local organic food is the best option.

which of the following is the most effective way to protect the environment:

1 walking and bicycling instead of driving to work and study

2 recycling old objects

3 buying locally grown organic food

Essay Topic

Which one is the most important for teacher of high school?

1. The ability to help students plan for their future;

2. The ability to find the students who need help most and help them;

3. Teach students how to learn outside the classroom.

The ability to help student with planning their future is definitely the most important capability for high school teachers.

To begin with, high school students are in desperate need for guidance about their future, and teachers are the only competent candidate to provide it. I know this from my personal experience. When I was in high school, a great portion of my classmates’ only goal is to reach for the minimum requirement for graduation, and to be able to get an offer from a middle-ranged college in the US, as all 15-year-old boys are profoundly addicted to either computer games or love affairs. Because of our immature mind, we had no idea regarding the choice of universities, or the selection of a future career path. What made matters worse is that our high school teachers provided us with virtually zero guidance concerning our college applications, not because they lack of the intention, but simply because they know nothing about it. Consequently, the vast majority of our parents had to hire an outside agency that specializes in the college application process which costs tons of money. Later we realized that this is an utter mistake, for what they did was simply giving us the timeline of the application process, translating our personal statements and recommendation letters from Chinese into English, and finally mailing out all our materials to the US. All of these simple tasks could be performed by ourselves, and these misfortunes surely could have been avoided if we had the luck to meet more competent teachers, with the ability to warn students and their parents about the black-hearted agencies and lay out lucid plans for students’ future.

The capability to find the students who need assistance most and help them, on the other hand, is not that imperative. The reason for this is quite simple, since high school students would come to teachers voluntarily if they are in serious trouble. In other words, many times students don’t want to be bothered by a teacher who treats them like a baby-sitter. As for the “help” part, I firmly hold the faith that all teachers are already equipped with the willingness to solve student’s problem gladly, using their prehistoric powers, no matter how difficult the situation can be. So the willingness to help students should be the minimum standard to be qualified as a teacher.

Similarly, the skill to teach students how to learn outside the classroom is completely unnecessary. For one, most high school students have no time outside their classrooms at all, as all their spare time is already occupied by cram school or by extracurricular activities. Even in the rare circumstance that some students may have free time, parents could always play the part of their instructor on how to self-study.

To begin with, as a young man living in a big city, I need to start saving up from now on, because there are a lot of things in the future costing tons of money. Take my good friend Foosen for example. He is an optimistic guy who prefers to seize the day. He can spend all his salary within just two days either on luxuries or on trips. Before he was even 22, he already went around the whole Africa. Unfortunately, not everything goes according to plan. Last year during his trip to South Africa, he accidentally broke his leg and had to go through surgery. However, since he could not cover the expense, he had to call everybody to borrow money. It took so long for him to collect the money that the surgery was delayed. As a result, the recovery period for him was 2 months longer than everyone else’s. Now, this example might be a particular instance, and it is out of his expectation. Nonetheless, in today’ssociety, even the potential spending within our expectation is already quite worrying. For instance, in Beijing, if I wish to purchase a 30-squaremeter apartment, it would cost me over 3 million yuan; if I want to invite, say, 20 friends to my wedding, I would have to pay over 200,000 yuan; not to mention if I have a child and want to support his education, it would cost at least 50,000 yuan per year just for him to go to kindergarten. It aches mejust to look at these horrifying numbers. If I don’t save up for my future, there would be no future. (275 words)

1. Doing work: by hand or using machines? Some people like doing work by hand. Others prefer using machines. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Some people like doing work by hand. Others prefer to use machines. I definitely fall into the latter category. I use a machine for almost all of the work I do. The reasons why I prefer to use machines are that most hand work is tedious, machines are faster and more efficient, and I am more proficient with most machines. Two things that I spend a copious amount of time doing are writing and sewing. Both of these endeavors border on pain if I do not have a computer or a sewing machine, respectively. What was once a fun task becomes very monotonous, and no longer enjoyable. Using a machine can turn ordinary tasks into exciting ones. Using machines to do work is also much faster and more efficient than using your hands to do it. For example, if I wrote this essay by hand, rather than using the computer, it would probably take me at least five times as long. Hand sewing a shirt would take ten times longer than using a machine to do the same work. Not only are machines faster and more efficient, I am much more proficient using machines than I am doing the same work by hand. I find that when I am sewing by hand, all of my seams are very uneven and crooked. However, when I sew on a machine, my seams are perfect. The machine helps to keep my hand in line, therefore I can turn out a much better product. It is the same for writing essays. My handwriting is messy at times. If I had written a paper, I cannot correct it as easily as if I had written it on the computer. My writing blurs together, and sometimes I cannot even read what I have written down. Machines are definitely a better way for me to work efficiently, proficiently, and enjoyably. 102. Should schools ask students to evaluate their teachers? Schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

如果采取了这样的方式,就会出现老师迎合(cater to/ pander to/ play up to students' taste)学生而不是引导 (guide; lead)学生,违背了教育的原则。

Teachers have a very difficult job in society. They not only have to learn how to teach material effectively, but also must learn how to deal with a wide variety of personalities. While teaching is a difficult job, I think it is important for schools to ask students to evaluate their teachers. I think this is the right thing to do because it encourages teachers to try their best, it gives students the opportunity to choose effective teachers, and it allows the schools to have the best teachers possible teaching. If a teacher knows that at the end of the term, the students will be evaluating his/her work, then the teacher will be driven to do a very good job. If there is no pressure from evaluation, a teacher might be prone to doing a less than perfect job. I believe that everyone needs an occasional evaluation to ensure they are doing their job correctly. In the case of a teacher, the students will give the most important evaluations. If there was a public summary of which teacher scored the highest on his/her evaluations, then students would be able to take courses based on which teacher was the best at the job. This would allow students to excel in their studies, and achieve better grades. Finally, if schools ask students to evaluate their teachers, the schools themselves would be able to have the best teachers working on campus. If a teacher scored too low on an evaluation, a replacement could be found. This is a much better method than waiting for students to complain about a teacher. Teachers do have a difficult job, but regardless of this, they must excel at it. If a person is a particularly poor teacher, the students will not learn the required material, and suffer for it.

3. The most important characteristic that a person can have to be successful in life In your opinion, what is the most important characteristic (for example, honesty, intelligence, a sense of humor) that a person can have to be successful in life? Use specific reasons and examples from your experience to explain your answer. When you write your answer, you are not limited to the examples listed in the question.

To be successful in life, one should have the characteristic of independence, that is, he/she has the ability to think critically. By critical thinking, one is capable of analyzing insightfully, concentrating on the right target, thereby making a wise decision. Thinking critically can enable one to analyze problems insightfully. We live in a world where controversial issues are often simply taken for granted. For example, most people are reluctant to think carefully about issues like whether boys and girls should take separate classes. Recently a high school in Beijing announced that their students from then on take separate classes. Many parents support such ridiculous decision without careful consideration. They are poor thinkers. Critical thinking is but to ask some simple yet essential questions, which always brings amazing sometimes appalling outcomes. Is such a scheme capable of eliminating underage sexual behaviors among adolescents? Is such a scheme guarantee boys and girls free of negative effects? Sadly, the decision had been made but the question left unanswered. Thinking critically can help one concentrate on right targets. We all have only and exactly 24 hours a day, but we often have mountainous work to do in hands, along with which many personal affairs seem equally urgent. Concentrating on right targets is probably the only way to overcome such dilemmas. For example, ETS has recently announced that GRE examination will be transformed back to paper based test. Grumbles are all around, and complains are posted almost on every BBS on the Internet. But if students think critically, however, they will find out the simple fact that even if ETS had made an awkward decision, test preparers should concentrate on the right target—preparing test as prudently as possible, and at the same time, grumbling never helps. Only by thinking critically can one make decisions wise and prudent. Sound decision making is essential to success. Decisions such as which movie theater we should go tonight are simple enough to make by tossing a coin, but decisions such as which university or which major we should choose are complicated enough so that we need careful comparisons. A comparison sheet will help a lot, simply by listing several relevant questions such as “Am I really interested in this major?” or “Are there more opportunities in the city where the university locates?” By analyzing insightfully and concentrating on the right targets, wise decisions are not hard to reach at all.

4. Artists' contribution or scientists' contribution, which is more valuable? It is generally agreed that society benefits from the work of its members. Compare the contributions of artists to society with the contributions of scientists to society. Which type of contribution do you think is valued more by your society? Give specific reasons to support your answer.

Art and science are essentially a strange coupling. Yet more often than not, they are considered as divergent rather than consistent with each other. The artist employs image and metaphor; the scientist uses number and equation. By casual juxtaposition, these two fields seem to have little in common: there are few, if any, references to art in any standard textbook of science; art historians rarely interpret an artist's work in light of the conceptual framework of science. Despite what appear to be irreconcilable differences, however, they do have at least one thing in common—both of them have significant contribution to the society, but through probably distinctive way. The development of science and technology has always accompanied the progress of the society. The invention of the steam engine brought a new era of thrift of world economy; the employment of electricity has multiplied the productivity and virtually reproduced limited resources on the Earth; the innovation of computer technologies has made the Earth a little village and connected distant countries as a single market. While sometimes the progress of science and technology, such as that of human cloning, cause troubles or originate dilemmas, it seems always undeniable that in a broad sense, the development of science has provided people a much higher standard of living than that of their counterparts in any phrase of the history. Visualization and fascination have been the major power of any form of art. For example, any' religion in this world cannot exist without music, which helps realize the faith of the church to an astonishing extent. Each and every revolution on this earth was accompanied by numerous corresponding art productions, because the artists sense the circumstances, and then reflect their sensations with sophisticated techniques in their production, which can be easily perceived by the public through powerful empathy. Nobody could evaluate art as correct or not standard, needless to say the public, they simply feel it is good or not, therefore art has always had magic influence on the public and society in general. However, it's been said that there is no science without fancy and no art without facts. Science fictions have long been functioning as a major vehicle for the public dissemination of science; scientists share parallel view of space, time and light, etc. with artists. Not only are art and science interrelated with each other but they also contribute to each other in various way. Therefore, it is hard to compare the contributions of art and science, it is simply partial to say that either one contributes more to the society than another does.

5. Living in university housing or in an apartment in the community? Students at universities often have a choice of places to live. They may choose to live in university dormitories, or they may choose to live in apartments in the community. Compare the advantages of living in university housing with the advantages of living in an apartment in the community. Where would you prefer to live? Give reasons for your preference.

Being a new student at a university is an excitement. Choosing where to live, whether on campus in a dormitory, or off campus in an apartment, is in fact quite a big decision. Both of these options have their relative benefits. Living in a dormitory has many advantages over living off campus. For example, one has the opportunity to meet dozens of new students. One is usually placed in a room with a roommate, who can help with homework, and give much needed support during difficult times. Another advantage of living in a dormitory is not having to cook food. Most students coming to a university have lived their whole lives with their parents, and inexpert at preparing food, for they were not in charge of the cooking in home. Many students who first learn to cook their own food while going to school eat a very unhealthy diet. On top of this, many students are so preoccupied with their studies that they do not have time to cook a nutritious meal. Therefore, the fact that the dormitories include a cafeteria is very beneficial. However, living off campus has its advantages as well. In most situations, one has much more freedom to do what they want in these living conditions. For instance, one can stay up late studying or come home late without disturbing a roommate. Also, one is not limited to the cafeteria food if he/she is a particular eater. Living by oneself also has its benefits. One never has to deal with rude or messy roommates. Overall, I think that both of these options are good choices. However, I recommend that first or second year students live in a dormitory, and perhaps wait until they are older and more accustomed to university life before venturing out on their own. This way, one gets the best of both worlds: the camaraderie of living with many people and the independence of living by oneself.

范文:

In the face of fierce competition from international students and decline of local students’ interests in academic study, the government needs an effective plan to improve education quality of high schools. Undoubtedly, for any plan to take effect, the first step is to train teachers who are directly responsible for students’ study. In my mind, between options of training a few at first or training all of them online at the same time, the latter one must be a better strategy.

In consideration to efficiency, training all teaching staff online can help the government improve overall education quality in short time. Teachers usually have different schedules, so it must be difficult to have them together frequently in a seminar. Possibly, the compulsory training will arouse complaints. However, thanks to the wide coverage of Internet, teachers can easily access training materials at any place and any time individually and flexibly. Moreover, as high school teachers, they must possess the consciousness and capability of studying on their own. Therefore, with all teachers starting to study at the first time, the process can be greatly simplified. On the contrary, it costs twice as much as time to train a few elite teachers who then convey what they obtain to peers back to school.

In consideration to effectiveness, training all teachers online together will generate an atmosphere of positive competition and cooperation. It is more encouraging that all teachers begin at the same starting point. There can be a private account for each participant that records his or her studying progress and ranks among peers. In addition, trainees of all schools can freely share their thoughts and get inspiration from each other on the giant cyber environment. Under peer pressure, teachers will become more involved and active. However, another proposal of selecting a few good teachers getting training will run into troubles at the initial stage. The problem lies in how to select the “good teachers”. It is difficult to set a convincing standard that is agreeable and acceptable to all. A foreseeable outcome might be the emerging of bias between those selected and unselected.

To sum up, the wise choice of the government to improve education must be providing online training to all teachers together.

The government wants to improve the education of high school, and there are two plans:

1 Choose a group of good teachers and train them first, and after that let them go back to their schools and train other teachers.

2 Provide training for every teacher online, with providing online materials and let them study individually.

范文:

It happens that we may carelessly ignore some people’s feeling and suddenly realize how important they are in our life after we lose them. To prevent it from happening, people adopt different strategies, even including keeping distance. In fact, a better way to understand and improve relationship with important people in life is to spend more time with them.

Admittedly, by keeping distance with people we believe we have strong ties with, we will make clear how the life is with their absence. Living a life without them, we may fail to perform well and start to make mistakes. The feeling of strong emotional attachment proves they are indispensable. For instance, the end of friendship with an old friend will help us realize without him, we have no one to have a drink together on Friday night. However, in this way, when we finally realize the significance of relationship, we may already do harm to it and it may be too late for us to make up.

In fact, by keeping distance, we lack necessary communication that is important for us to better understand each other and consolidate mutual trust. As social animals, we have to deal with various complicated relationship with people around us, including family members and friends. It seems difficult to distinguish who is more essential. Without sharing of thoughts and experiences, we can hardly know whether we have same attitudes towards life, social events, interpersonal relationship, etc.The similarity between us is usually the foundation of a long-term relationship. For example, only through communication can an optimism person find people around them possessing positive attitudes towards troubles, and he needs their encouragement and inspiration.

In addition, the absence in life of people we believe important, especially their critical moments, is usually considered by them as disrespect and indifference. This is surely baneful for the relationship. In fact, to strengthen ties with people we care about, we ought to spare more time to accompany them. No matter what people we care about are experiencing, they need accompany from trustworthy ones, such as sharing of their happiness, supporting of their decision, and comforting of their failure. The time spent on accompanying is the most valuable investment one can make and the most precious gift one can give. For instance, to show up in friend’s birthday party, graduation ceremony or promotion party is more important than sending expensive presents.

To sum up, to keep distance or to leave far away is definitely not the right choice for us to understand people we care about. Actually, it is more advisable for us to communicate and to accompany.

Some people believe that spending time away from the people we care about helps us improve our relationships with them, because being away from these people makes us realize how important they are to us. Other people believe that to improve our relationships with people we care about, we should spend as much time with them as possible, because spending time apart can damage or harm a relationship. Which view do you agree with, and why?

(275 words)

When it comes to the qualities of successful people, people varying in education background and experience tend to give distinctive answers. Some would argue that those who are successful should be versatile and excel in lots of skills like communication skills, leadership skills and even organizational skills while others believe that one who is exceptional in one area is more likely to be successful. I personally believe that a versatile person with various skill sets can be more successful.

Admittedly, as the saying goes Jack of all trades and master of none and there are rare cases where some people who are expert in only one field stand out. However, it is more common for versatile people with multiple skills to be successful because of the following reasons.

First off, people who are talented and versatile are more competitive and competent in their career, and they enjoy a better change to be promoted in a professional setting. Actually, a lot of positions require a combination of skill sets, such as paying attention to details, knowledge in a specific field and communication skills, etc. Indeed, more skills will give someone more chance to get promoted. For instance, if a computer programmer just knows how to write program and focuses only on the technical side of the job, chances are that he would never get promoted. On the other hand, if not only does the computer programmer have programming skills but also he is a genius people-wise, he might get a better shot to be promoted as a manager in charge of a team of computer programmers. Thus, he can enjoy more opportunities in his career.

Additionally, it is much easier for a versatile person with various skill sets to build rapport with people and make friends. It is self-evident that people with all kinds of skills will be very attractive and charismatic. A person who not only has professional knowledge in one specific field but also has people skills and leadership skills will be very popular and standing out among his or her peers. For instance, my friend Alex, a bright young professional working in the financial industrial. He was awarded the most valuable banker in his company because of his professionalism and dedication to serving the customers and clients. Not only is he successful in his professional life, but also he is an amateur violinist. Actually, he plays for a city choir to represent the community and go against other cities' choir. Such skills can be very useful when building up connections with people and thus he can expand his social network easily. Furthermore, he can use these skills to entertain his clients and customers on certain occasions and have their trust on him.

In conclusion, a versatile person with various skill sets can be more competitive and outstrip others in the workplace, eventually they enjoy better chance to be promoted. Another advantage of having multiples skills is that it can be much easier and readily for them to network and expand their social connections.

Sometimes, a taste may surprise us suddenly, as it is so familiar with the food cooked by mum in childhood and hence reminds us a lovely memory. However, children today may not share the same experience with us when they grow up, because modern parents usually spare less time to prepare food at home and choose to dine out. In my mind, this is a tragic trend that should be reversed timely.

Admittedly, it is convenient and enjoyable to have dinners in a restaurant. The restaurant not only helps us save much time on purchasing and preparing food, but also offers many options on delicious and nutritious dishes. Especially for people busy with work or study, dining in restaurants is the most efficient choice. Take students’ exam weeks as an instance. With much time spent on preparing exams and finishing assignments, students can hardly spare extra time to cook. During this periods, various local restaurants are most busy, as they successfully cater students’ needs.

However, no matter how reasonable it seems to dine out when one has no time to cook, the role of homemade foods is irreplaceable. In the first place, homemade foods are much healthier than those offered in restaurants. From the very beginning, people are able to select the most fresh vegetable and meat in the supermarket, and than cook in a healthy way. Even better, if one has some general knowledge of nutrition, he can design and prepare a balanced diet for the whole family. It is controllable that how much calorie, protein and carbohydrate the family takes in. On the contrary, in restuarants, we usually have no idea about the condition of foods before they are served. In addition, the chef in restaurants often adds too many various seasonings to improve tastes, such as oil, pepper and salt. If people dine out frequently, the absorption of excessive fat and salt may gradually lead to chronic diseases.

In the second place, cooking at home not only provides family members with ideal opportunities to communicate with each other, but also is important for the pass on of dietary culture. As people are usually busy with their work and study, it seems they have less time to sit down and talk together. But, the process of cooking and cleaning dishes requires family members to cooperate. While washing vegetable and preparing bread dough, people naturally share anecdotes and give opinions. To prepare dinner is also a perfect way to express love and care. In a word, cooking at home effectively strengthens bonds between family members. Moreover, as children learn cooking skills from parents, a nation’s valuable cooking culture is handed down from generation to generation. For instance, it is cool to treat friends at home with spaghetti serving with the secret sauce learnt from grandma.

To sum up, compared to dinning out, cooking and eating at home is a better option for people to keep healthy, strengthen family ties and hand down family catering culture.

Some people prefer cooking and eating at home, while others like eating in the restaurant. Which one do you prefer and why?

It was about two centuries ago when Industrial Revolution made it possible to produce paper and print in large quantities at a much low cost that printing press started to develop rapidly and lead public opinions. Nowadays, there are more means for mass medias to convey information, like radio, TV and Internet. However, facing the overwhelming amount of information, people begin to challenge the credibility of mass medias. In my mind, the mass medias, in general, are actually more reliable than before.

To begin with, it is in fact the challenge and criticism of readers and audiences that force mass medias to try their best to present accurate information timely. Undoubted, the popularization of compulsory education and expansion of universities have overall increased the percentage of population that receives education. As a result, people today have stronger ability to judge and analyze than before. Also, as people gradually get used to collect information from different sources and make comparison, it is unwise for a media to fool people with inaccurate information at the risk of being discredited. On the contrary, most mass medias who aim at long term development of good public relationship invest in the recruitment of excellent journalists and improvement of facilities to serve readers. But, in the past, mass medias were less concerned about their accuracy as they doubted people’s ability to discern.

Secondly, the fierce competition also pushes people working in media industry to be accountable for their information. In the past, the right to publish and broadcast was controlled tightly by governments and a small number of media companies. They, as the true leaders of public opinions, cared less about their accuracy but focused more on how to make profits by manipulating minds. For example, during World War II, governments of many European countries, including Britain and Germany, strictly censored and controlled the press to encourage people to join the army and serve for the war while ignoring the facts of heavy death tolls and economic loss. But today, the broad coverage of Internet has lowered the threshold of media industry and enabled small companies and even individuals to compete for readers and audiences. Therefore, a media that fails to guarantee the authenticity of its information can hardly survive.

Admittedly, it is also true that there are problems caused by mass medias’ inaccurate information. To attract eyeballs and strive to be the first to release the information, some medias choose to distort the truth or publish without further research and confirmation. Their irresponsible behaviors not only mislead the public, but also disrupt the order. The worst scenario is to motivate other medias who fail to observe professional ethics to follow suit. This is especially obvious in the report of celebrities’ tidbits. However, for the healthy development of mass media in the long term, such irresponsible acts will be gradually corrected by general public’s ability to discern right and wrong as well as the unbreakable law of survival of the fittest.

To sum up, the mass media nowadays have to be more accountable for the authenticity of their information, in order to survive and succeed in the long run and to protect the whole industry.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement : Sometimes people think nowadays the media (TV, newspaper, Internet) are less concerned about the accuracy of news than in the past, and the incorrect information may cause more problems to the public.

Your friends have the opportunity to choose either one of two types of major field of study, which one would you suggest your friend to choose and why?

1) A major that would allow him to complete and get a degree faster so that your friend could start working full-time sooner

Or

2) A major that requires many years of study but would provide him with more employment opportunities and job offers in the future.

范文:

The constant demands for more knowledge and skills bring the significance of education. Students need to be prudent while choosing a major in order to find a decent job after graduation. I will recommend to take the education program that enables students to apply a better job though costs more time to finish compared with the one with short study time but limited potential for career advancement.

Admittedly, to start working soon helps students to become financially independent or even reduce family’s economic burden. For some students, their families may have difficulties in paying the tuition fees and hence apply loans from the bank. It is meaningful for them to earn money and alleviate the financial pressure as early as possible. For instance, some people choose to take the training of computer programming which enables them to find a comparatively well-paid job in IT companies. However, there are other options to reduce economic burden, like part-time jobs and scholarship. People ought to make study or career plan with foresight.

To begin with, the long period of time invested in study enables students to grasp more knowledge and skills that are essential for them to be competitive in job market. Thanks to the fierce competition caused by population growth and education expansion, there are more candidates with excellent academic background competing in job market. Consequently, with increasing number of choices, employers gradually increase requirements in recruitment. From the perspective of students, the investment of time in academic study and self-improvement, which allow them to become candidates appreciated by potential employers, will be rewarded with a satisfied job offer. For example, students who have the perseverance to major in economics or finance which takes four years will find a job as banker or finance analyst, while those who want to begin working early and choose to study accounting for two years may just find a position as accountants. As we all know, the former job offers salaries three to five times higher than the later one does.

Secondly, it takes time for students to improve academic strength and have better understanding of their filed, which allow them to achieve long term development in career. Few people work in the same position from the very beginning to retirement, as most people expect promotion or otherwise they will be replaced by younger employees who accept lower salaries. To get promotion, one should possess stronger ability to study on their own and insight of the industry which cannot be acquired within short time. Take students majoring in marketing as an example. Not only do they need knowledge of advertising and brand building, but also they must be able to understand consumer psychology, cope with public relationship crisis, and do research on market trend. All these are necessary for them to be promoted from a common employee to manager, and even company partner. On the contrary, without years of accumulation in study, people can hardly be competent for promotion.

To sum up, a person with foresight will opt for the education program with promising career prospect and prepare for the long period of study.

A/D: It is more important to read and watch news presented by people whose opinion is different from your own view than by people whose opinion are similar to yours.

With the increasingly diverse means of acquiring information, it has become a common phenonmen that we are exposed to conflicting ideas about a single event, which has aroused deep social concern. A growing boday of average people are wondering whether it is more important to read and watch news presented by people whose opinion is different from your own view than by people whose opinion are similar to yours. From my pesepective, it is advisable to be a good listener to the different viewpoints.

Firstlly, receiving news presented by people with dissenting perspective can help people have access to the comprehensive information and get closer to the truth of the events. As is common sense, every single event or piece of news is not as simple as we expect. So it is an indisputable fact that nobody can have a panoramic view of the truth of the incidents due to the limited experience and knowledge span. In this case, gaining news from our opponents will definitely deliver a brandnew perspective and make us have a second thought of our own viewpoint. In other words, the clashes of different views will temper and refine our opinion about the events, with the result that a whole picture is formed. On the contrary, just selectively listening to the similar ideas, people will become narrow-minded.

Besides that, another potential benefit of obtaining news from those with opposite view is the higher likelihood to make acquaitance with more people. As is known to all, the way person responds to someone whose opinion differs drastically from theirs reveals their true character. To be specific, being tolerant of different voices about one thing reflects that a person is endowed with the quality of inclusiveness and humbility, which can make him/her leave a good impression on others. Consequently, no one, including those from opposing party, will refuse to become friends with humble and inclusive ones. Instead, those solely accepting same opinion are usually self-centered and arrogant so that they not consider others’ thought or feeling but impose their own opinion. Thus it is unlikely that they will build friendship with those with different ideas. Even worse, the alreadly established friendship may also end, once the disagreements occur.

In a nutshell, it is sensible for people to read or watch news from people with dissenting perspective, in order to gain the whole picture of the news and enlarge the social network.

With advent of new technological gadgets, like laptop, tablet and smart phones, people now have access to all sorts of news sources. In face of the overwhelming news sources, some people tend to watch news that present similar ideas with them, while other prefer to watch news with different perspectives and ideas. I, personally, think it is far better to watch news with distinctive opinions and viewpoints based on the following reasons.

First off, news from various sources are biased and it is quite irrational to read or watch news from a single source, actually it makes better sense to be exposed to news that provide different kinds of ideas. Even though it is very essential for news media to be fair and unbiased, nonetheless, in reality, most of the news media are biased and prejudiced. Part of the reasons is that the news sources can be various, like the government, independent institutions or even think tanks. Lots of media or news agencies use phrases like “expert believes”, “most people agree” or “observes argue that”, all of which are pretty much biased since “most people” is a slippery word. The people might not represent the majority of the people and lack of diversity in terms of race, gender and other demographic factors.

Additionally, being exposed to news with distinctive opinions and ideas can help people to develop critical thinking skills and thus have a fair and more justified stance on certain issues. People varying in past life experience, education background and economic conditions tend to have totally different opinions on certain issues. Having access to different ideas can broaden people's horizons and enrich one's experience. For instance, I took it for granted that every child at an appropriate age has the chance to go to primary school until I watched a documentary about the elementary school enrolment in the poverty-stricken region in my country. Their family can barely feed them and the local government has little educational resource to provide them proper education. This documentary totally changed my perspective on the primary school enrolment in hinterland.

In all, exposure to news with different perspectives has lot of benefits since news sources are generally biased, and by watching news with different opinions we can have a much more fair and clear view.

The question of “ what is the most important subject or skill the schools should teach? ” has never failed to attract attention from educators, school administrators and even politicians especially when it comes to subjects like technology, engineering and math. Some argue that students should be encouraged to take such classes rather than the ones they are interested in since they give them a better shot to find jobs. However, personally, I am not in favor of this position based on the following reasons.

Admittedly, it is true that courses like technology, engineering and math are very

technical, most of which can be applied in solving real world issues. However, the exposure that students have to apply these theories are very limited in class. Taking technical oriented classes will not give students a competitive edge to ensure future jobs opportunities, on the other hand, there are enormous benefits for students to take courses that they are interested in.

First off, taking courses that students are interested in can be a great motivation for them to achieve higher goals. Old saying “ interest is the best teacher” remains relevant as it did a century ago. Interest serves as the internal motivation for students to explore in the area that they are interested, on the contrary, if they are forced to take courses for a utilitarian purpose, they might not keep their interest for a long time thus have a lower learning efficiency. Recent study conducted by the Society of Developmental Psychology shows that students will be more enthusiastic and passionate about learning when given the freedom to make their own choices to take classes. Also, giving students the opportunity to choose the classes they are interested in can help them to explore their real interest, thus their potential can be fully tapped before heading off for career options.

Additionally, taking courses students are interested in have enormous practical purposes and they can be a great source of leisure and relaxation. For instance, lots of students like art and music but seldom do they have a chance to learn. Actually, taking art and music classes help to develop creativity and make the students more imaginative. Actually, lots of scientific research in the psychological field shows that early exposure to art and music not only boosts academic achievement but also promotes creativity, self-confidence and school pride. Students who spend more time in learning art and music end up having higher analytical thinking and reasoning skills than those who don’t.

In conclusion, taking courses that students are interested in can be a great motivation for them to achieve higher goals and it can also be a great source of leisure and relaxation.

Under the current system of higher education, with the majors becoming increasingly diverse, how to choose an appropriate major has never failed to attract the attention of the general public. Most parents strongly recommend that it is much better to choose a major which can guarantee a good job, while college students, the receiver of higher education, tend to choose the field which caters to their interest. As far as I am concerned, the latter viewpoint is more reasonable, with the reasons listed below.

First of all, selecting the major that students like can help them to grasp the knowledge better. Just as a saying goes, interest is the best teacher, which is true of undergraduates. To illustrate, under the drive of interest, students are more likely to automatically devote more time and energy into what they major in, thus definitely having a better command of professional knowledge and skills imparted by teachers. By contrast, without any interest in what they are taught, college students who generally lack in self-motivation may do anything but study in class. For instance, on campus in China, it is not uncommon to see that many students squander their valuable time by taking a nap, whispering or even playing smart phones while attending the class. What’s worse, some of them may even skip classes. The reason underlying the above phenomenon is nothing but lack of passion for what they learn.

Secondly, choosing a major students are interested in can do a better job in helping them secure a good job. As we all know, with the constant change and progress of society, the job market is also changing quickly. In other words, some promising industries a few years ago might very well become obsolete, which means that the major one chooses cannot necessarily guarantee a good job. By contrast, under such a society full of fierce competition, it is the professional skills and abilities people own that play the key role in landing a decent job. Obviously, only when people select the field they have passion for can they establish a solid foundation of specific knowledge and skills in this field. Therefore, the major catering to one’s interest can better improve his or her competence, thus increasing their likelihood of securing a decent job.

Taking all the above into consideration, we can draw the conclusion that choosing the major which interests students is much better, in terms of making undergraduates have a better command of what they major in and find a suitable job.

TV set was invented about less than a century ago, and it takes a few decades to become a major part of mass leisure. Usually, audiences watch TV programs to relax and to kill time. However, with the emerging of more well-designed programs with educational functions, it is beneficial for people to watch for knowledge but not simply for cheap entertainment.

Admittedly, there is every reason for people to entertain themselves with TV programs. After whole day work or study under heavy pressure, people need an effective way to release stress. Thanks to the funny story, humorous conversation, or exaggerated facial expression and body language, people burst into a belly laugh in a relaxing atmosphere while lying on the sofa with beverage and snacks at hand. This is exactly why cartoon movies are popular among both children and adults, such as Pleasant Sheep. However, there are actually many other programs that can both help people relax and acquire knowledge. They deserve more attention from audiences.

To begin with, when people are able to kill two bird with one stone, why not choose to spend time more meaningfully with programs that convey knowledge in an interesting way. To attract eyeballs and increase audience rating, even educational TV programs directors and producers will spare no efforts to make their program interesting, so as to make more profits. Consequently, they usually add many elements to entertain audience, such as jokes, funny tones, or celebrities. For example, an interesting cartoon play for young children in China, called Haier Brothers, teaches audiences knowledge about natural science through two little brothers’ traveling around the world. Their traveling stories explain why there are mountains and rivers on earth, how rains form and why there are four seasons, etc. The vivid pictures and interesting narration never fail to attract little audiences.

Secondly, it is also worth watching programs of serious topics, in order to equip ourselves with necessary knowledge and expand outlook. Living in an ear featuring information explosion, people need the ability to collect information and knowledge that may be crucial in work or life. Sometimes, when there is too much information that is overwhelming, confusing or even disorienting, people should be able to discern with a clear and critical mind. An effective solution is to watch some talk shows about political and social issues. The discussion between the cynical host and distinguished guests will give us a clue on how to view events happening around us. Take the most important political issue in US, namely presidential election, as an example. The speeches of various candidates usually contain too much information that is sometimes misleading or even demagogic. As to have a better understanding of candidates’ political views and their possible future behaviors, we need to draw opinions from professional and objective sources from those political talk shows.

To sum up, it is highly necessary and recommended that audiences today spend more time on TV programs that are educational and enlightening.

Agree or disagree with the following statement people should spend more time watching programs that provide knowledge and spend less time watching programs which provide entertainment only?

Gapyear

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Students should take at least one year to work or travel before they go to universities.

Gap year?

A gap year is a year before going college or university and after finishing high school or taking a year off before going into graduate school after completing a bachelor as a undergraduate. It is also known as a sabbatical year. During this time students may engage in advanced academic courses, extra-academic courses and non-academic courses, such as yearlong pre-college math courses, language studies, learning a trade, volunteer work, travel, internship, sports or more.

Gap year has numerous benefits, but typically the two most commonly cited reasons for taking a gap year are a desire for increased self-awareness and to address academic burnout.

1. travel the world and discover new countries and cultures

2. enjoy a once in a lifetime experience and a real personal adventure

3. step outside one’s comfort zone and get a new perspective

4. meet new people and make friends of lifetime

5. take a break and return refreshed and refocused on what a person wants to do in life

6. add unique experience to CV to help one to be admitted to a university or get a dream job

Gapyear

托福写作范文素材:gap yearThe Pros of Taking a Gap Year

After high school, students typically choose one of two paths:school or work. However, a third option exists that very few even consider: taking a gap year. It may not be the norm in North America, but gap years are quite common and highly recommended in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Just like attending university or being in the workplace, taking a gap year is not right for everybody. It takes a lot of research and several factors should be considered before deciding on the next step.

Pros:

It's a chance to regroup and rediscover. After being in school for several years, you can feel burnt out. Going to university while you aren't in top shape mentally will only lead to poor performance. Use the time to get some well deserved rest and relaxation. Especially if you feel out of touch from yourself and the rest of the world, a gap year will only do you good as youreflect on your future goals and aspirations, as well as spend some much needed time with family and friends.

Most students take their year off to travel. Whether you're backpacking through Europe or meditating in an ashram in India, you'll revel in your newfound respect for different cultures, customs, beliefs and languages. You will end your gap year with several stories and memories that will last a lifetime.

Some students also take the opportunity to work. The money saved up from working is put towards future endeavors and purchases such as a home, a car or an education. Others work to gain an edge in an overly competitive career market. By taking internships or job opportunities related to their career path, they gain valuable experience and a chance to network with industry experts that will help their resumes shine.

It's also a time to pursue other passions. You might want the time to write your Oscar-winning screenplay or create a start-up company in your garage. You might even discover that you want to pursue a different career path.

It's a chance to get involved in something you really believe in. Release the humanitarian inside you and volunteer locally, nationally or internationally.

Student should take at least a year to work or travel before they go to universities.

Students should spend at least one year working or traveling before they go to university? Do you agree or disagree?

The gap year = the Grand Tour “间隔年”,也叫“壮游年”或者“断档年”。

Such is human nature to explore the unknown and see the outside word, that is why a great many high school graduates are keen on traveling or working for a period of time before attending dream universities. Conflicting ideas clash in determining whether or not it is a wise idea to inspire high school leavers to experience the Grand Tour. As I see it, the merits of experiencing the gap year outshine its potential demerits.

第二段

The most important educational benefit of taking a year off before starting university life is that traveling exposes young adults to stunning places and exotic cultures. It is one thing for teenagers to read about distant countries, but it is even better to enrich the experience of the world on one’s own. What one learns by associating with strangers and absorbing diverse cultures is something he or she could never acquire in the classrooms. For example,I made many congenial friends by self-travel to Tibet after finishing my schooling. This fantastic journey not only expanded my mind but also alleviated my stress triggered by tight academic study. Feasting my eyes on the stunning landscape really sweetened my life and lifted my spirit.

第三段

Virtually, youngsters can also become the beneficiaries of working as part-timers too. By that I mean, earning a living has a key role to play in helping one accumulate relevant working experience, train one’s crisis-solving abilities and deepen one’s insight into the society, which will lay a solid foundation for one’s future career ladder. To illustrate, via embarking on part-time jobs, I knew that money doesn’t grow on trees. Then, I studied even harder when coming back to campus.

第四段

Notwithstanding all that, we can never ignore the potential downsides caused by experiencing the gap year. First, the study might be delayed. Some school graduates are too immature to draw on their gap year, so they just waste time during that period and harvest nothing. Even worse, it is highly possible that some youngsters might end up never returning to campus. However, since academic qualification is extremely indispensable to every individual,my concern might seldom happen.

尾段

In closing, my stand is that to inspire young adults to take a year off before going to college is a two-edged sword. Yet youngsters should be encouraged to challenge themselves. This is one of the best ways to mature their thoughts and chasten their characters.

1. go to university = start university life = attend university 上大学

2. earn a living = work as part-timers 谋生

3. do some sightseeing = to be well-traveled = to travel on one’s own 自己旅行

4. Such is human nature to explore the unknown

5. The merits of experiencing the gap year outshine its potential demerits

6. to experience the gap year 体验间隔年

7. take a year off to work and travel before attending dream university

8. feasting my eyes on the stunning landscape

9. really sweetened my life and lifted my spirit

10. add spice to the dull routine of everyday life 增加枯燥生活之情趣

11. lay a solid foundation for one’s future career ladder

12. money doesn’t grow on trees

13. notwithstanding all that 尽管如此

14. end up doing sth 以……为结局

15. be led astray

16. Since academic qualification is extremely indispensable to every individual,my concern might seldom happen.

17. …… is a two-edged sword ……

18. This is one of the best ways to mature their thoughts and chasten their characters.

Nowadays, children rely too much on the technology, like computers, smartphone, video games for fun and entertainment; playing simple toys or playing outside with friends would be better for the children’s development.

范文:

Undoubtedly, children today, as the most tech-savviest generation in history, can hardly live a day without computers and smartphones which play an important role in their study and entertainment. However, as the time children spend with digitals devices skyrockets, both parents and educators start to worry about the perils of new technology and advocate that it is more meaningful for children to play with simple toys and meet friends.

Admittedly, children acquire much joy from computers and smartphones. The well designed computer games never fail to fascinate their players with vivid figures, attractive rewards, and cheerful music. It is even more joyful when classmates are playing together online. In addition, almost every child who has a smartphone will install chatting software. As they also have the strong desire to be connected, they keep talking with each other even after school on the phone. If there is anything that they are reluctant to communicate with parents or brothers and sisters at home, it is more fun to chat with classmates.

However, as there are self-evident disadvantages of playing computers or smartphones, such as lack of exercises, poor eyesight and isolation from real world, parents and educators advocate replacement: simple toys and meeting friends. To begin with, there are many toys that not only bring as much joy as computers and smartphones do, but also help children provoke thinking and activate imagination. Compared with computer games which require few thoughts but simple exercises of fingers, those toys encourage children to make more efforts in the game and rewards them with stronger sense of achievement. One of the best examples must be Lego, a toy welcomed by many families globally. With numerous small pieces of different colors piled up, children are able to build anything in their mind, like an architecture, an animal and a cartoon character.

Secondly, communication and interaction with friends is absolutely more important in children’s development. While entertaining with computers or smartphones, children are usually absorbed in their own inner world and pay little attention to others. The unwillingness of talking to others will gradually make children isolated and weaken their communication ability. This is exact reason why it is vital for parents to motivate children to play outdoors with friends. Through gaming with friends, children learn how to get along well, compete, and cooperate with playmates. For example, playing basketball teaches children the significance of team spirits; playing chess allows children to discuss strategy. What’s more, the company and reliance of friends makes children feel needed, which also encourages them to expand social circle and improve interpersonal skills.

To sum up, children benefit more from playing simple toys and meeting friends than from playing with computers and smartphones.

Some people tend to study a subject in a very intensive way over a short

period of time, while others tend to study a subject constantly over a long

period of time. What do you think is a better way of learning? Explain

why.);

(Some people like different friends. Other likes similar friends. Compare the advantages of these two kinds of friends. Which kind of friend do you prefer? Explain why.)

“Is well organized and well developed, using clearly appropriate explanations, exemplifications, and/or details.”

I. 名字

My best friend works in an e-commerce company. (general description)

My best friend, Johnson, works in Alibaba. (description with name)

My best friend, Johnson, works in Alibaba, China’s leading e-commerce corporation. (description with name and place)

[Sub-point]Mobile games, which you may be highly familiar with, have prevailed for years and now they serve as the main approach for young people to relax and reduce pressure. [Exemplification] Pokemon, the most popular game recently, is overwhelming the globe at a speed beyond imagination. In many public places of big cities like New York, London and Tokyo, young people gather and look for small creatures with their cellphones. [Analysis] Mixing the virtual and real worlds together, Pokemon provides the players something they can enjoy anywhere and it is a pit-stop in daily routines.

[Sub-point] Big cities present young people with plenty of career opportunities. [Explanation] Thanks to the developed public transit, geographical advantage and compelling economic policies, big cities become where companies, big or small, tend to gather. [Exemplification] Take Shanghai as an example. Over 300 multinational companies (out of the Fortune 500) from all industries, ranging from finance to auto manufacturing, have their branches or subsidiaries in this metropolis, creating millions of job opportunities for people, especially the young. Every year more than 1 million college graduates flood into this place of dream, hoping to find a suitable job and that one day they will have their own career and gain a foothold here.

Which one of the following values is the most important to share with a young child (ages 5 to 10)? Why?

A Being helpful to others

B Being honest

C Being well-organized

Use specific examples and evidences to support your answer.

Some people like to buy and eat their meals at restaurants frequently, while others like to do this at home. Which do you prefer? Why?

It is better to work for business owned by someone else than to work for the business of one‘s own family

Three different ways to protect the environment?

1. biking or walking to school or the workplace

2.recycling or reusing the garbage

3.eating organic food without pesticide

A city wants to help teachers of its high school students (age14-18) improve their teaching. It is considering two plans:

1. Choose a small group of excellent teachers; these teachers will attend a class led by an expert for additional training in how to teach effectively, and they will then come back to their schools and provide that training for other teachers in school.

2. Provide additional training in teaching effectively for high school teachers, using online material that each teacher will study individually.

Some people think that we should keep away from others to improve our relationship, because being away from people reminds us of how important they are. Others think we should always stay with others to have good relationship because we can communicate with them more often. What do you think?

Would you prefer a higher pay job with longer work time or an average pay job with normal work time.

1. A>B A>C

4. B- C- A+

5. A+ A+ BC+段内转折

Nowadays, food has become easier to prepare. Has this change improved the way people live? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

说到过渡词Transitional words,一般主要有以下三种类型,即表顺序:firstly, secondly, finally(last but not least); 表并列:besides, in addition; 表对比:in contrast, in comparison。

Spend money or save them

Spend money or save them?

Is it better to enjoy your money when you earn it or is it better to save your money for some time in the future? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Some people say that it is better to enjoy your money as soon as you earn it while others prefer to save the money for later. It's a difficult choice faced by lots of people because of the different attitudes they hold towards money. As far as I am concerned, I vote for the former choice, which is that it is better for one to enjoy his or her money as soon as it is earned. Spending money as soon as possible is my preference because of three reasons as follows.

First, we can observe easily in the modern society that the dominant philosophy nowadays is 'enjoy your life when you are still young'. Most young adults like to work for a period of time and then go on for a trip to visit some places they have never been to. Those trips not only help them to keep in shape but also provide them different kinds of knowledge and new perspective in looking at their environment. Other people spend the money for their leisure, which helps them to relax and go back to work with enough energy.

In the old days, it is said that people who save money in a bank understand the philosophy of thrift. Actually, economists say that in the modern world saving money in a bank is the quickest way to lose it. Moreover, none of the rich people became rich by getting interests from the bank. Living in a constantly changing world, we should adjust ourselves to accept the new ways of investing our money to different areas in order to get the most of it. That is probably the reason why most of the people nowadays put their money into business to get a better payback.

The third obvious(显然的)reason why I prefer spending money rather than saving them is that it is part of the contribution for the economic growth in our country. If nobody has the needs to buy stuff from others and the market, nobody will think about how to produce useful products and sell them to make the most profits. Some countries continue to lower the interests in order to force people to spend their money and therefore benefit the society as well as the people themselves. In this broad view, I prefer spending money rather than saving them.

In conclusion, I prefer spending money because it benefits ourselves as well as people around us. It's also important for kids to know how to save money as a sense of thrift. Nevertheless, spending money is still the best way to make our lives enjoyable and worthwhile.

Change about your school

If you could make one important change in a school that you attended, what change would you make? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

Change about your school

Talking of making an important change in my school, I'd like to suggest that our education system put more emphasis on the development of learning skills and applications of theories into practice instead of simply learning knowledge from books. The proposal is based on the reasons as follows.

For one thing, overemphasis on academic learning poses a threat because of confusing the purpose of learning. As school credit is usually considered the major criteria of academic learning, in a credit-driven school, one may try hard to learn simply for learning's sake. In other words, college students tend to blindly cram their brains with numerous texts and formulas while do not have a clear idea of what they really want to learn, why they need to learn, not to mention how the things they are learning are useful to the reality. An example is way that common ESL students learn English: they may spend several years in reciting grammar rules, but can hardly utter an English word in front of a foreigner.

Another reason that causes me to make the suggestion is the requirement of today's ever-changing knowledge economy time. With the increasingly accelerated pace of information explosion, one can hardly depend on knowledge from books that he or she has learned at school. Mastering learning skills and knowing how to apply the skills into practice are becoming indispensable than ever before. A recent survey conducted by educators shows that most students in our country lack the ability of using tools and solving problems compared with their counterparts in the United States. This informs us to take a serious look at our book-knowledge based education pattern.

In sum, it's high time for us to give a touch on our education pattern concerning the narrowness of book knowledge learning as well as the necessity of practical learning required by the contemporary world.

Thanks to the constant improvement of living standards, modern people put more emphasis on health. By maintaining good health, people stand more chances to make dreams come true and enjoy a happy life. Luckily, in modern society, to keep healthy is much easier than before.

Admittedly, some people may suffer from the health problems caused by quick life pace and heavy pressure. Owing to the fierce competition in modern society, people usually complain that they have to work overtime or even burn the midnight oil and recall the easy life led by people in the past. Moreover, with much time occupied by work, they can hardly spare time to do exercises and gradually give up themselves to a sedentary lifestyle and fall into sub-health conditions. However, with the increase of awareness of those health problems, people are able to make a change by adjusting their schedule and leading a healthy life.

To begin with, the easy access to information allows people to gain more knowledge on diets than before. There are many professional websites telling people how to eat in healthy ways according to their needs. According to dietitians, it is necessary for people to have a certain proportion of meat, grain, vegetable, egg, milk, etc., so as to guarantee the absorption of nutrients needed for the body function. In addition, people also can learn from cooking shows on TV. The chef teaches audiences how to prepare healthy and delicious food. For example, my mum learnt the way to cook broccoli with a special source without losing its valuable vitamin. However, in the past, most people who were unaware of the significance of balanced diets simply believed people should eat as much as possible in case they could not find enough food the next day.

Secondly, the advancement of medical treatment also guarantees that people today can lead a healthier life than in the past. Thanks to the efforts of scientists and doctors, there are various powerful vaccines that protect people from detrimental diseases, such as chickenpox and polio. Also, as people today have more knowledge of various diseases, the early and accurate diagnosis prevents diseases from getting worse and claiming lives. More importantly, the constant improvement of medical knowledge and equipment enables doctors to cure diseases with less pain and fewer side effects and even conquer incurable diseases. For example, it took only several months to find the vaccine of Ebola spreading wildly in western Africa in , which saved thousands of lives. But, in the past, the limitation of medial knowledge inhibited people from finding right solutions. People were powerless in front of bacteria infection before the invention of Penicillin.

To sum up, it is definitely easier for modern people to lead a healthy life than they did in the past.

It is easier to maintain good health today than in the past.

A lot of high school students now cheat in homework assignments, by asking other students for answers. Which of the following do you think is the most efficient way to stop?

-asking parents to help stop the students from cheating

-penalty or punishment to the students

-asking teacher to create homework assignment that cannot be easily cheated.

范文:

Thanks to the easy access to Internet, children today have more education resources. By simply typing in keywords, they are able to search for knowledge quickly online. However, Internet also makes it easier for them to cheat in homework. With the help of various chatting software, they even can share what they have acquired. To discourage children from cheating, teachers have three solutions in mind, including parents’ supervision, strict punishment and assignments that are difficult for students to cheat. In my opinion, the second one is the best of all.

To begin with, having severe punishment in place is the only solution that makes students consciously avoid cheating by themselves. It is important for students to realize how perilous to form the habit of cheating. Teachers fail to know students’ true academic performance, and students who find with fewer efforts they can also achieve a satisfied score will gradually refuse to work hard in both study and future career. The strict penalty reminds students the danger, warns them to actively regulate behaviors and stresses the significance of honesty and integrity. It is not worthy to take such a risk to deceive teachers. For example, when a student is found dishonest in an assignment, the professor should directly fail him in the subject and urge him to take it again the next year. A long term purpose of setting strict penalty is to educate students that whether there is supervision or not someday in future, they know that cheating is not the option.

Secondly, it is difficult either for all parents to effectively supervise children’s homework or for teachers of all subjects to design homework that is impossible to cheat. Sometimes, parents are busy with work both in office and at home. There is not enough time left for them to check children’s homework page by page. It is also unfeasible for parents to sit by side with children who will feel uneasy and even upset. Or simply, some parents may feel embarrassing when they find that the subject their children are working on is beyond their knowledge to comprehend. Then, from the perspective of teachers, homework of different subjects take different forms. For literature teachers, it is easy to prevent students from cheating by assigning essay writing as homework. However, not all teachers are that lucky. For teachers teaching maths, physics and chemistry, most assignments they give to students are questions that require students to use formula to do calculation and there is just one correct answer. This kind of exercises are essential for students to grasp knowledge they acquire in class. Therefore, teachers of those subjects can hardly inhibit students from cheating by changing homework.

In summary, to cope with the increasing number of students who cheat in homework, schools need to impose severe penalty on those who dare to cross the line. This is the most effective method to teach students to willingly regulate behaviors by themselves.

Given the fierce competition in the job market, some people who are tired of interviews and exams would like to find a position in family business. In my mind, however, people benefit more in the long term if they choose to work in a company owned by strangers.

Admittedly, there are immediate benefits for us to work for the family. In family business, parents and relatives can offer a stable position that helps us soon ease financial burden. More importantly, the guidance and support from them enables us to quickly adapt to the work environment and improve necessary work skills. Therefore, it is comparatively easier to achieve career success. For instance, working in the restaurant owned by parents, children are able to learn much parents’ valuable first-hand work experience, such as how to negotiate with suppliers for the best vegetable and meat at reasonable price and how to recruit competitive chef. All these help people swiftly grow up as mature businessmen.

However, to work in family business is not always the best option. In the first place, to be happy and successful in career, one needs to find a job that he is passionate on, but not a shortcut with family’s help. It is likely that children have no interest in what the company owned by parents or relatives is doing. As a result, the only motivator for them to stay in family business is the stable income which is far from enough to encourage diligence or dedication. Possibly, they will end up with mediocre employees. On the contrary, if they have the courage and ambition to pursue a job that they are interested in, there will be a completely different scenario. Internally charged, people are more willing to make efforts and give full play to their strength in the company. Moreover, they will become self-driven to boost capabilities and strive for promotion. In a word, interests will be the most effective motivator in one’s career advancement.

In the second place, the endeavor one makes in a strange company enables him to become independent and develop strong wills. Without protection from parents and relatives, people will surely encounter more barriers and confront more difficulties. However, this experience of hardship is actually precious and rewarding, as people gain confidence from the process of solving problems independently and cheering up from frustration and failure. For example, in parents’ company, children inherit almost everything, including loyal clients, reliable suppliers, and committed employees. Whenever there comes a crisis, parents stand out and meet the challenge. In others’ company, however, the situation will be quite the opposite. The boss just gives orders and evaluates according to one’s performance. Hence, people need the demanding environment that helps them to be competitive and competent.

To sum up, facing the choice between working in family business and competing independently in job market, people should opt for the latter one.

It is better to work for business owned by someone you don’t know than the business owned by your family.

Do you think that it’s better to travel to different countries when you are young than when you are older?

范文1:Argument 1 (for)

It is better for people to travel to different countries when they are young than to wait until they are older. Younger travelers gain many useful experiences and skills. By waiting until they are adults, people lose out on many opportunities that could assist in situations throughout their lives.

Travel is an opportunity to supplement education about new places, cultures, people, and languages. A basic understanding of such things is taught in schools, but travel provides students with an opportunity to experience such things in person. Therefore, travel rounds out a classical education and solidifies what is learned. For example, a person may take several years of a foreign language such as German in school, but never have a chance to practice outside of the classroom. That person will invariably forget most of the language. However, if that person goes to Germany and talks with local people, he or she will remember the words better and develop a stronger understanding of the language and culture.

Not only does travel reinforce standard education, but it is also a chance to get a viewpoint that is not taught in formal academic settings. Going to new places opens doors for making friends and seeing life from a different angle. Such an expansion helps break down dangerous stereotypes and biases that lead to hatred, prejudice and war. It is important to have these experiences as early in life as possible to create a more just and equal society.

Finally, travel develops self-confidence. People learn to deal with situations outside their familiar rage. It is good for young people to gain the confidence that they can cope with new experiences on their own. Even simple activities like finding a meal or riding a bus can be extremely challenging when using a different language in a new place. Self-confidence is essential for decision making and problem solving, which are both necessary for work and social situations throughout life. Therefore, it is good for young people to travel so they are not afraid of dealing with new situations throughout their lives.

Travel reinforces a regular education and provides a perspective not found in classrooms. It also boosts self-confidence. Therefore, it is good for people to travel when they are young rather than just wait until they are older.

范文2:Argument 2 (against)

Mature adults are more prepared for travel than young people are, so it is advisable to wait before visiting foreign countries. People who wait are better able to understand what they see, they have experience to deal with problems, and they have more financial flexibility.

First, travel to a foreign country inevitably involves seeing new things. Schools, though, do not prepare students for the realities of a completely different place. Mature adults can take the time to research about where they are going and get the most out of the experience. For example, it might be pretty to see the Great Wall of China. However, if the viewer understands the history of the wall and knows its purpose and the effort involved in building it, the experience of looking at the wall is greatly enriched. It is therefore wise for people to go to places that they have had time to study in depth rather than just go to famous places when they are very young.

Second, mature adults are more capable of dealing with problems than young people are. With more life experience, the adult can assess the dangers of a situation and evaluate the best course of action to solve it. Adults are more aware of the resources available to them at home, so can apply such knowledge to unfamiliar circumstances. Instead of panicking when something goes wrong, a mature adult can draw upon experience to cope with the problem successfully.

Finally, travel is expensive, so it is better to travel when there is enough money to cover the expense. Younger people often are trying to save money for an education or repay school loans, so they do not have the financial leeway to spend on a trip. Alternately, their parents selflessly spend their own money to pay for their children to have a vacation overseas. By contrast, a person who has worked many years in a job may have more money and paid vacation time to invest in personal travel. It is better to wait until there is enough money to travel than rely on loans or worry that parents are sacrificing their interests.

For these reasons, it is better to wait until a person is a mature adult to travel rather than go to foreign countries when young.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:

All scientific discoveries should be shared to all scientists around the world; Governments and businesses should not keep any scientific discoveries secret.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

范文1:Argument 1 (for)

Scientific discoveries should be the property of the world, available to all scientists. Governments and businesses should not keep discoveries secret because it impedes scientific progress and inhibits the development of technologies that can improve the lives of others.

First, sharing discoveries saves time and energy because scientists do not have to repeat the same experiments. Scientists can make faster progress and use fewer resources because they can learn what has already been done and expand on the existing research rather than duplicating the same results. If governments and businesses are secretive, then many companies will have to do the same groundwork before they can move on to the next step. For example, by sharing the patterns for making the Mars Curiosity rover, NASA has enabled other scientists to improve on the design and make rovers that will endure even more rigorous conditions than those encountered by Curiosity.

Second, sharing discoveries allows scientists to confirm data and establish whether theories are on target. One theory may have multiple variations that need tested before it can be established as true or not. For example, an experimental drug must undergo rigorous testing before it is approved. If several scientists in different areas are pursuing the same line of research, they can compare results obtained under different conditions. The example drug might prove effective only in certain parameters based on things such as age or weight. This difference might not show up in one of the trials but might be found in another. Combining the research would give scientists a better idea of the limitations of their product.

Finally, sharing discoveries could potentially save thousands of lives and solve some of the difficult health and environmental problems that plague the world today. By looking at the progress of others, a scientist might find the key needed to create a new vaccine, develop an inexpensive building material, create an alternate energy source, or other such invention that could make the world a better place to live in. In isolation, a scientist may not have the information he or she needs, but referring to the work of others, can tackle large problems such as hunger, disease, and climate change.

Sharing scientific discoveries is essential because it facilitates new discoveries. Scientists can save time and resources, confirm results, and help others if they are willing to share rather than keep their data secret.

范文2:Argument 2 (against)

There are many cases when it is acceptable to keep research private. It is not necessary for all scientists to reveal their data because such a policy could limit new research and cause harm to others.

Scientific research takes a significant amount of time and resources, and someone must pay. Therefore, the people doing the research have a right to keep their discoveries secret, so they can patent the results and earn enough profits to cover the expenses of their investment. If scientists must share what they learn, others can use the data to make inventions or products. Companies will be less likely to invest in original research because it is cheaper to use data done by someone else, and the overall amount of new research will decrease. There is a financial burden that is easiest repaid when the research can be patented or sold rather than revealed at no cost.

Another reason against enforcing a policy of revealing all scientific research is that some research might be incomplete. Others may misinterpret the results because not enough tests have been performed. For example, one test may show that a drug cures a certain disease. However, if no additional studies have been done regarding side effects and people just assume that the drug is effective, then they could become ill using it. Therefore, it is better to wait until enough data has been gathered to ensure that the results are accurate. Incomplete data may cause problems if revealed to an audience that misunderstands what it represents.

A final reason that some scientific research should remain secret is that some discoveries could cause serious harm if they are in the wrong hands. The scientists who create dangerous technologies should be responsible for making sure that they are properly used. For example, certain chemical agents and explosives can be misused as devices for terrorism. It is better for the companies and governments holding the knowledge of how to make such things to restrict access to that knowledge so that it does not end up in the hands of terrorists.

There are many situations when scientific research should not be shared with the world. Scientists need to be able to pay for their research, so should be allowed to patent the results. In addition, scientific discoveries should be protected from being misunderstood because they are incomplete or misused because they are dangerous.

Over the last few decades, the world has witness unprecedented population explosion, as the result of peace, economic growth and scientific advancement. As the increase gradually becomes uncontrollable in some regions, problems associated with population appear on our overburden earth, like starvation, poverty, diseases, and even conflicts. To address these issues, some governments refer to some modern agriculture methods to increase crop yields, though at the expense of environment. In my mind, this is irresponsible.

To begin with, the wide application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, a common practice encouraged by some governments to boost yields, generates pollution and makes the soil infertile gradually. It is true that at the very beginning, crops grow faster and bigger in size with ample nutrients from the fertilizer and with most pests killed. However, this cannot last for long. The deposited chemical components of fertilizers and pesticides contaminate the soil and water system. As a result, the soil will lose its ability to store nutrients for plants and become barren. Even worse, farmers who want to maintain the level of yields may put more fertilizers in the land, which form a vicious cycle. It is the same with the pesticides as pets gradually develop the ability to resist the poison and farmers spray more pesticides. In the long run, the over use of fertilizers and pesticides can just exacerbate poverty and hurt the arable land.

Secondly, the irresponsible reclamation of land from nature also can hardly help people provide enough food in the long term. With the improvement of tools, people become more powerful to acquire more land by cutting down trees, draining wetland, and planting around lakes or rivers. The expansion of farmland surely enables people to harvest more crops. However, we can hardly overlook the fact that the reclamation poses threat to local ecosystem. With the equilibrium of ecological chain destructed, people cannot realize sustainable development, which means environment deterioration or even disasters. For example, Chinese government has banned farmers from planting near Po Yang River in south China, as the planting of crops has led to the decline of fish and frog.

Thirdly, another even more dangerous practice is the spread of genetically modified food. There are already numerous farmlands and experimental fields planting genetically modified food, like soybeans and corns. Until now, there is no scientific research result that can prove the absolute safety of GM food, and many people worry about the potential threats. At this stage, what we are sure about is the plantation of GM crops do contaminate local environment in an uncontrollable and irreversible way: the spread of pollen by wind or animals. It means with one piece of land growing GM crops, the land surrounding can hardly be immune. Therefore, it is irresponsible to apply such dangerous practice without clearly knowing the downsides and corresponding solutions.

In a nutshell, though at present the shortage of food for growing population is a serious threat to our world, it is unwise to adopt agriculture methods that endanger environment. We need to find environment friendly solutions to this problem, so as to realize sustainable development.

modern agriculture methods damage the environment, but providing food for the growing population around the world is more important than protecting the environment.

As the first teacher of a child, parents play a pivotal role in children’s growth, which is not just restricted to physical well-being but includes personality-building and psychological health. Especially for young children aged 5 to 10, parents are like role models that children admire and try to imitate. So, there are many good traits that parents are supposed to help children develop, such as being honest, being helpful and being organized. In my mind, the first lesson children at this age should learn is honesty.

To begin with, honesty is the valuable character for a child to be accepted by others. To maintain friendly relationship, people need mutual trust. It is vital that a child is honest to parents, playmates, teachers and anyone they meet. At young age, they may be simply blamed for telling lies, but when they grow up, what dishonesty costs them is the loss of trust, and gradually they may be isolated. In a word, parents should timely point out children’s lies and appropriately help them correct the mistake. For instance, the reason why a child refuses to admit he breaks the vase is he fears parents’ punishment. But, if he finds his lies can help him avoid punishment and thus gets used to lying, the loss will finally become unbearable and irreversible in future work or study.

Secondly, children should also learn to be honest to themselves. Inevitably, people will encounter some situations or consequences that they are unwilling to confront. At this moment, someone may choose to deceive themselves and escape from reality. Through constantly lying to themselves, they may finally forget the truth and accept lies they make up as facts. For example, when a child does not want to admit he loses a game at school, he may make up some excuses to cheat himself, such as unfair referee, and refuses to admit the competitor actually is stronger. Consequently, once he finds sanctuary in lies, the dishonesty to inner heart stops him from training harder to win the game but encourages complaints and self-abandonment. Parents at this time have the duty to motivate children to break lies and be honest to themselves bravely.

Admittedly, being cooperative and organized is also significant characteristic that children ought to possess since young. To keep everything in order is the prerequisite for one to maintain high efficiency in work or study. In addition, kind-hearted people are usually popular among people and can easily expand social circle. For example, parents can encourage children to keep their room tidy and organized, and organize children in the neighborhood to join in community services. However, for all the valuable traits that children should share, what comes first must be honesty. An organized and helpful lier can never be called a respectful person.

In summary, good parenting is of great significance in children’s growth. It is parents’ responsibility to equip children with good personalities at formative years. Among all the desirable traits children should cultivate, honesty is always the most valuable one.

Which value should be shared by children (5-10 years old) most and why?

1. being honest

2. being helpful for others

3. being well-organized

Many people visit museums when they travel to new places. Why do you think people visit museums? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

As a tour guide for a Japanese woman in the city of Beijing three years ago, I was amazed that she would be interested in the Chinese Culture and History Museum, which even Chinese pupils does not like to visit. Museum in my eyes used to be a really boring place, which could only display items that are dull and motionless. I thought Museums were dead. Until after I traveled to some places myself did I start to realize the life of museums.

A place consists mainly of its past and present in terms of time. When you are visiting one place, the existing scenery, streets and buildings give you chances to understand its present easily. But when it comes to the past of a place, things are different. With time going by, the past is always staying in the past. Sometimes with the new constructions, a place's past can even be burnt into ashes.

In most cases, museums preserve part of the original appearance of a certain place and present plenty of information in terms of objects and pictures that one cannot obtain from the present. Only when information from the present and that from the past are combined could one obtain a relatively integrate image of the place. That is why the Japanese woman insisted that she visit the Culture and History Museum in Beijing. Like most of other cities, Skyscrapers, glass walls and the modern street scenes are all over the place in this city. The red and gray walls, the palaces and small courtyards, which were typical scenes in the past, can only be found in the vintage photographs in the museum.

Thus, visiting museums is a very effective way to understand a place's past, therefore one can get a whole picture of a place that one visits.

Universities usually provide many programs to help freshman adapt to campus life as soon as possible. If you are a freshman, which one of the following would you choose:

1 Attending a one-week orientation or introduction program when you are in the university campus, and it will begin before you have the classes.

2 Meeting regularly at your first year with a student in your major field who has entered the university for several years.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

范文:

It is never easy for a freshman to get used to the life on campus where everything is new. The young mind filled with curiosity of a new life is usually discouraged by various challenges. To alleviate freshmen’s stress, universities usually arrange a one-week orientation for them to get familiar with the campus or arrange a student of their major in higher grades to help them. In my mind, the orientation week is a better option.

To begin with, the orientation week starting before the term will not occupy students’ time for classes and other social activities. The first challenge in college that freshmen have to confront is to get used to different professors’ different way of giving lectures. Unlike classes in high school, some of courses in college are given to hundreds of students, and professors cover many chapters during the two-hour-course and assign lots of homework per week. It takes much time for students who are new to university to become accustomed. Another challenge before freshmen is to meet new friends in class, get along well with new roommates, and enrich campus life by joining clubs. All these will take up much of freshmen’s time and keep them busy all days. Therefore, the orientation arranged before the term begins can help freshmen save much precious time.

Secondly, freshmen in fact need to rely on themselves to take the challenge and to explore the new campus life. Unavoidably, all students will feel uneasy while they arrive at a new environment, especially when they find classes that they will attend are more difficult and demanding. At this moment, it is natural that they will develop reliance on others to get through the hard time. To consult with senior students can be a shortcut for freshmen to find solutions. For example, senior students who have already taken many courses can offer much valuable information on professors, reference books, assignments and exams. Even, so much so that freshmen will know which professor gives less homework and which course is easy to pass. However, the help of senior students deprives of freshmen the opportunity to challenge themselves and to make mistakes. Though freshmen without those valuable advices may come across an array of obstacles which cost them much time to overcome, discourage them, or even fail them, they will finally be rewarded with the improvement of ability and confidence when they solve problems one by one independently. Even better, when they have to enter another new environment, they will have a clue on how to adapt themselves.

To sum up, to help freshmen get accustomed to campus life, universities ought to arrange the orientation week before the term starts instead of assigning them a senior student.

To help high school students have a meaningful summer vacation, high schools choose not to have them leave school for two months, and instead provide two programs:

1 attend classes to complete university-level course according to their major and field of study

2 visit museum and historic sites under the guidance of teachers and write papers when back

Which one do you think is better? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

范文:

More than one century ago, students in America need a long summer vacation to help family in fields during the busy farming season. Today when there is no need for agricultural work, the two or three months summer vacation seems too long if students simply use it to meet friends and hold parties. Schools should take good advantage of this period of time. In my mind, compared with visiting museums and historical sites, to attend classes relevant to students’ majors of study in college is a better option.

Admittedly, it is beneficial for students to visit museums and historical sites. At school, students study history from textbooks and then take standard tests. The boring texts and pictures printed in books usually fail to arouse interests among students who may forget them immediately after the exam. However, to take students to museums and places of historical interest will make a difference. Teachers’ instruction there will surely leave a deep impression to students. For example, students will have a better understanding of Lincoln’s speech at Gettysburg when they have first hand experience of visiting this city once torn by the Civil War.

However, it is actually unnecessary for schools to arrange such trips and students can travel by themselves with friends. What’s more, at museums and historical sites, there are professional tour guides who can provide instruction. Therefore, it is more meaningful for high schools to provide university- level courses, so as to help students make preparation for their future study. Firstly, the study of university-level courses will give students an advantage in university application. To compete for top universities, students need excellent academic performance. Usually, a high score of SAT or ACT test does not guarantee the successful application of one’s ideal school. Thus, many students take some university-level courses, like AP, to prove their academic strength and dedication in one field. High schools that offer relevant courses will be popular among good students who aim at famous universities and achieve a high enrollment rate to colleges and universities.

Secondly, the study of university-level courses will to a large extent help students alleviate academic pressure during the first year on campus. It is never easy for a freshman to adapt to the life on campus where he needs to take various challenges. Unlike classes in high school, some of courses in college are given to hundreds of students, and professors cover many chapters during the two-hour-course and assign lots of homework per week. Confronted with numerous subjects given by professors with different teaching styles, students may easily feel at loss and fail to maintain good academic performances. However, the academic preparation before they start their study in college will completely make a difference. The pre-study enables them to follow professors and finish homework comparatively easier. For example, students who are going to study physics in college can take AP physics, SAT II physics, calculus, etc. Those courses will help them lay a foundation for future study.

In summary, to make full use of the long summer vacation, high schools ought to offer university-level courses to students who can choose according to majors that they are going to study in college. This is a better option compared with organizing trips to museums and historical sites.
