我在托福口语考试你必须要知道的文章中提到,语言作为一门交流工具,在日常对话过程当中起到了彼此间传达想法的媒介作用。我们实际是在用外在的语言来表达内在的思维和想法,最终能够达到一个彼此间有效沟通的目的。
从ETS出题人的角度来分析,托福口语考试实际上是考查你用英文在特定时限下表述自己和别人想法的能力。笔者认为,目前大家在准备口语考试过程中所遇到的瓶颈主要有以下三点:第一,对题目类型不够了解。玩一项游戏不了解游戏规则,即便你的能力很强,如果不按照套路出牌,只能是死的很有创意的节奏。因此需要大家通过对OG的仔细研究,或者老师的介绍对托福口语的题目类型有全面并且深刻的认识;第二,语言能力欠缺。词不达意或者句不达意,即便表述清楚但给人一种不够地道的感觉;第三,表达能力不足。无法在特定时限下用言简意赅的语言将陈述和转述的内容表达清楚。相信很多人都会有四十五秒或者一分钟内说不完或者说不好的感觉,为什么呢?表达能力差。究竟差在哪儿?这里会有考试时紧张的因素,可能导致的后果即评分标准所讲到的发音不准确、语音语调、语速不够自然,表达不够清晰流畅,当然也可能是先天的表达能力不足所导致。

首先我们不妨换位思考一下,老外讲什么样的汉语,你会觉得他的汉语很棒?
我的一位来自挪威卑尔根的朋友Marie跟我分享了她做presentation的讲稿,其中的选词我觉得很值得大家细细体味。比如,她写道:“我认为一个最理想的恋爱对象就是一个结婚对象,那样我们的关系不会昙花一现。”我们大致一看,语言组织似乎没有什么大的问题,意思也基本能表述清楚,但如果做口头的演讲陈述,总会给人一种前半句有些“老外”而后半句很“老内”的感觉,为什么会出现这种情况呢?我们不妨从这句话的英文源头活水来分析。这句话的原句是这样的:I think my ideal love partner is a marriage partner. That way our relationship is not temporary.很地道的英文。但在中文语言的表述上Marie却选择了完全不同的语言表达方式,前半句是比较生硬的直译,而且“对象”一词还出现了重复的情况,给人一种很土很秋裤有些晦涩的感觉。事实上,假设让一个稍有语言功底的中国人来表述,他大多会引用主席语录第38章5节27行(虽然据笔者初步估算主席语录只有33章),即“我觉得我心目中理想的对象就该是以结婚为目的的”。如此表述,不仅能够很好的表述自己的想法,还能让自己答案略带喜感,甚至能表达自己的政治立场。后半句Marie表述的就非常地道,能够很好的引用汉语习语昙花一现来适当“卖弄”一下,表述自己对希望能有一段持久爱情的美好夙愿。
回到英文表述上来,先拿一个比较常见的成语例子来入手:覆水难收。大家第一次看到这个成语时,会想到用怎样的英文来表述它呢?笔者通过测试,发现大部分学生都是摇头或者很生硬的直译,比如:Some poured water can not be taken back.但假如让native speaker来表述的话,他们往往会说:There is no use crying over spilled milk, or there is no point beating a dead horse.

巧用计时器提高托福口语分数

如果说托福考试其他部分都是以分钟为单位计时,那么口语就是唯一一个以秒计时的部分。六道口语题没有一道题的答题时间或者准备时间超过了1分钟。也就是说,在不超过60秒内,需要完成有关某主题的表述或者概括大意或者回答某问题,这的确非常难。实际上在口语考试中,经常会出现还没说完自己草稿纸上准备的内容,录音就已经结束的情况。也有人抱怨说一道口语题答题时间是30秒,自己犹豫了10多秒。时间上的过度消耗和浪费都会对最终的口语成绩造成极其负面的影响。那么在时间上要如何加以注意呢?
计时器是最好的控制时间的工具。计时器可以帮考生调整语速和句子长度,这样准备口语的时候就能够培养对时长的控制和判断能力。另一方面,计时器也可以帮助考生习惯和适应托福考试时出现在屏幕上的让人抓狂的倒计时。

1、学会美国人的描述方式

1、尽量按照总分的结构进行叙述,单刀直入,这也是西方人习惯的表达方式。由一句主题句引出观点与中心,让考官能够清晰地得知叙述的主题,从而打下良好的基础。如果在考题中出现了问题,则应该开门见山地回答问题,切入主题,阐明自己的观点,从而为接下来的详细叙述理清层次以及节约时间,如果有多余的时间,则可以再增添一句总结的话语,使叙述详尽完整。
2、在叙述的过程中应该合理地利用逻辑词汇,这样使文章的逻辑顺畅,条理清晰。中国人说话习惯靠上下文去分析句与句的关系,但是西方人不同,他们习惯用逻辑连接词来表达句子关系,如果按照中国人的思维去说英语,在外国人看来就是一堆杂乱无章的句子罗列,这样的分数常常会十分的不好看。论点的叙述,则应该尽量在草稿上简单罗列,讲述时由浅至深,增强逻辑性与条理性。所以,在练习口语的过程中,最好请一位外教跟踪辅导,为学生纠正口音以及语言习惯等问题。
3、在描述时,应该尽量将抽象的话语具体化,不能很空泛地喊口号做呼吁,这样常常收效甚微。西方人习惯十分具体生动的描述,如描述环境很优美,不应该仅仅说“it's beautiful outside”,而可以去描述flower,tree,bird等细节,增强生动性。

发音怎么改?很简单,就是跟读。跟读,也就是跟着原始的录音,人家说一句,自己跟着读一句,而且有时候要读很多句,力求的就是要无限接近录音本身的发音,通过这种方法来校正自己的发音。其实这个方法就好像是,小孩总喜欢去模仿一些结巴,但是经常出现的情况就是模仿了几次结巴之后,就会发现自己真的开始结巴了。这其实就是跟读的作用的典型体现。
当然,这里马上面临另外一个问题,就是是否要跟着原文来读,其实这是一个见仁见智的了,如果你听力水平很好,那么不用原文你也知道在说什么,这个时候最好不用原文。但是,如果你的听力水平不够好,那就一定要看原文的,否则,当都不知道在说什么的时候,鹦鹉学生又有什么意义呢?这就是跟读。
流畅怎么练?很简单,就是模考。但发音好了还不够,如果你说话的时候有大量的停顿,分数也不会尽如人意。之所以会在说话的时候出现停顿,就是因为平时很少说英语,因此一旦开始说英语,就需要疯狂的用大脑思考自己接下来该说什么,当一旦开始思考的时候,嘴自然也就停下来了,这也就是为什么我们一听自己的口语录音就发现,自己在模考的时候有大量的停顿,因此,我们做模考的目的就是要加强自己在托福口语考试中组织语言的能力,让自己尽量可以在说前一句话的时候,就已经准备好了下面说什么,这样,自己的回答自然就流畅了。

因此,回头再来反观托福口语的话,众多托福考生的瓶颈,还是在于3点:1 发音 2 逻辑思维 3 真正流畅连贯的表达。
首先说发音,其实很多考友在开始准备托福口语的时候,最初体现出的一个问题,就是发音的问题。发音有问题,有时是自己意识得到的,就是一听别人的发音的方法与自己不一样,这就是可以意识得到的;有时是意识不到的,比如四川,广东的某些考友在发音的时候就会出现前后鼻音不分,就是一个很典型的意识不到的情况。

第二点,则是逻辑思维,中国考友的思维跳跃性很强。比如我们那个作文题目来举例,题目可以问,你认为人们在过去更容易成功,还是现在更容易成功?我们中国的考友的中心论点,很有可能就是:“现在的世界有很多的工具可以帮助我们”。人家问的是到底什么时候更容易成功,那你就直接告诉人家现在更容易成功好了,何必写的那么隐晦呢!这就是典型的中国考生特别容易犯的逻辑错误!
当然如果我们再细究的话,还会发现,就是语音语调里还隐藏了一个流畅度的问题。因为当我们中国考友的音频录音的时候,会发现经常会有很多中文多人常用的停顿和语气助词,这其实也是很影响口语的流畅度的,因此在练习的时候,应该掌握用well, and, I mean这样的词进行连接,会显著的增加语言的流畅度!
托福口语多练模拟题 可提高临场发挥水平
所以强烈建议要通读OG,熟悉考试规则,掌握答题要点。另外就是缺乏迅速组织好答案的能力。
首先可以理解,考生在托福口语考试中面临两点压力:
时间紧、任务重。托福口语的答案准备时间只有15-30秒,答题只有45/60秒,没有考前的大量训练,这种脱口而出的素质是不可能具备的。
要迅速呈现“完整的答案”,要有层次。即使我们已经积累了大量的素材也不一定能立刻想到完美的答案。
